Balbriggan Town <strong>Council</strong><br />
Balbriggan Town <strong>Council</strong> (Town Commissioners as it was prior to 2002) has a long<br />
history of service as a Local Authority, which began in 1860.<br />
The <strong>Council</strong> has nine elected members who were elected for a term of five years<br />
following the local elections held on 5th June <strong>2009</strong>:<br />
Monica Harford Cathaoirleach <strong>2009</strong> -2010, Larry Dunne Leas- Cathaoirleach <strong>2009</strong> – 2010,<br />
Sean Brown , Dermot Murray , Grainne Maguire , Grainne Kilmurry , Terry Kelleher ,<br />
Frank Snowe and Peadar O’Kelly .<br />
The <strong>Council</strong> provides civic leadership for the people of Balbriggan. It represents their<br />
concerns and needs with <strong>Fingal</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, Government Departments and other<br />
Statutory Bodies and promotes the town as a good place to live, work and visit.<br />
The town boundary was extended in February <strong>2009</strong> to reflect the growth of the town and<br />
provide an opportunity to the newer residents of Balbriggan to vote in the Town <strong>Council</strong><br />
elections. The population of the new administrative areas is approximately 18, 000.<br />
The Town <strong>Council</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> Awards are held in October each year which affords the Town<br />
<strong>Council</strong> the opportunity of paying tribute to the many people, individuals and groups, who<br />
by their actions demonstrate and promote pride and community life in the town. The<br />
selection of award winners is based on personal achievement or team effort in areas<br />
such as Sport, Art, Literature, Culture or Community Service.<br />
The Town <strong>Council</strong> organises the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town and plays an active<br />
role in the decoration of the town at Christmas in conjunction with the Balbriggan &<br />
District Chamber of Commerce.<br />
The majority of the <strong>Council</strong>’s income is provided by town charges included in the <strong>Annual</strong><br />
Rate Bill paid by the town’s business community.<br />
The Town Manager and Town Clerk deal with the administrative affairs of Balbriggan<br />
Town <strong>Council</strong> along with administrative staff seconded from <strong>Fingal</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>. The<br />
Town Manager is Mr. Peter Caulfield. The Town Clerk is Mr. Brian Murray.<br />
