Figure 1 highlights the trend in the number of jobs being created and lost over the period<br />

2000 to <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In the period 2001 to 2004, agency assisted companies recorded net job losses,<br />

which was followed by a period of net job creati<strong>on</strong> in 2005 to 2007. 2008 saw net job losses<br />

of 6,784. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, 13,059 job gains were outweighed by 47,047 job losses, giving a net job<br />

loss of 33,988.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se net job losses in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> were c<strong>on</strong>centrated in traditi<strong>on</strong>al manufacturing sectors such as<br />

food (-2,169), and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> related sectors such as n<strong>on</strong>-metallic minerals (-3,566), and<br />

basic and fabricated metal products (-3,111). Computer, electr<strong>on</strong>ic and optical products in<br />

the modern manufacturing category also experienced net job losses with a decrease of 3,654<br />

jobs in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> medical devices sector was the <strong>on</strong>ly manufacturing sector to see<br />

employment growth in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, with net increases of 365 jobs.<br />

Employment creati<strong>on</strong> has been driven by the services sectors over the past decade, but in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> all services sectors saw net employment losses. Computer c<strong>on</strong>sultancy and programming<br />

sectors saw losses of 4,033 jobs while financial and business services showed net employment<br />

losses of 4.6 (972 jobs) and 10 (1,167 jobs) per cent respectively in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
