Studying at Flinders gives you
the opportunity to build on your
studies and develop the skills
required for your future career. At
Flinders we produce graduates
who are knowledgeable; who can
communicate effectively; and
who have the skills to connect
across cultural, political, social and
geographic boundaries to tackle
major challenges.
Flinders offers a guaranteed entry
pathway to TAFE/VET students with
a Certifi cate 4, Diploma or Advanced
Diploma. This means that your level
of qualifi cation will guarantee you
a place in one of the many degrees
we offer from Business, Arts, Science
and Education through to studies in
the Environment, Nursing, Health
and Behavioural Sciences.
Flinders has a proud record of
encouraging and supporting
students from a variety of different
backgrounds to consider and
complete their university degrees.
Continuous learning – well beyond
an initial university or vocational
qualifi cation – is now a fact of life.
Students are now more demanding
and sophisticated than ever in their
expectations of TAFE and University.
They understand that the rapidly
changing world of work means the
ability to gain and build on post
school qualifi cations is vital.
At the same time there has been
growing cooperation between the
TAFE and University sectors, as
well as growth in complementary
study offerings.
As a result we are now seeing
very signifi cant numbers of TAFE
graduates applying to continue their
studies at university.
Going from TAFE to university is now
an accepted and well established
further education pathway.
We aim high to inspire achievement
by our students to prepare them to
meet the challenges and embrace
the opportunities of modern
life. Many of our graduates have
gone on to have national and
international success in their fi eld
of study or career. We believe this is
due to the University’s fundamental
commitment to excellence in the
education that we offer students.
I encourage you to investigate the
pathways available to begin your
university studies at Flinders.
Whatever your background, we
are confi dent you will fi nd Flinders
University an inspiring and vibrant
place in which to learn, study and
shape your future. We look forward
to welcoming you to campus.
The aim of this booklet is to help
make that pathway as smooth and as
seamless as possible by giving you all
the information you need on how it
works at Flinders University.
I’m delighted to learn from Flinders
University that in 2009 the University
increased the number of offers made
to applicants on the basis of their
TAFE qualifi cations by 30%.
It gives me great pleasure to
commend this booklet to all students
and graduates of TAFESA and to wish
you all the best for your future studies
and career development.
3
4
what’s it like
studying at
fl inders?
For most students, study at Flinders will involve a
combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, plus
time for individual study. Depending on your course,
you may also have laboratory or practical classes,
fi eldwork or work placements.
Lectures
Lectures are given by various members
of teaching staff. They are prepared
presentations on a particular topic and
are usually given in large lecture theatres
to the whole student group. Lectures
are an important part of the topics you
will study and give you the basis for your
own reading and research.
Tutorials
In tutorials you will meet in small groups
with academic staff and other students
in a somewhat informal setting. They
give you an opportunity to explore
and clarify what you have learned in
lectures and try out new ideas by asking
questions and joining in discussions.
Work Integrated Learning
Work Integrated Learning gives you an
opportunity to apply the knowledge and
skills you learn in lectures and tutorials
to practical situations. This can include
practical work in small teams where you
will carry out and report on laboratory
work or fi eldwork, or individual work
placement in an industry, government or
community setting.
Group work
You may also be involved in group
work in which you collaborate with
other students on a project, activity or
presentation. This encourages you to
communicate, share expertise and tackle
tasks that you would not be able to
undertake alone.
Individual study
Your independent reading, research and
study, guided by lecturers and tutors, will
enable you to explore topics in greater
depth. This is especially important when
you are preparing for an assignment, an
essay, a tutorial/seminar presentation or
an exam.
Our Careers and Employer Liaison Centre helps you do the following:
Flinders has a
variety of resources
help you kick-start
your career.
Initially I registered with TAFE in a twelvemonth
Women’s Studies course to gain
computer skills. Apart from learning
computer skills, the course also covered
essay writing, presentations, public speaking,
and communication skills. In addition, during
this course I was encouraged to think about
advancing my education. TAFE conduct a
program to assist students through the
process of enrolling at university.
The following year I commenced a Bachelor
of Environmental Management degree.
I completed my degree in June 2006 and
received 9 units of credit for my Certifi cate
IV in Women’s Education from TAFE,
which shortened my study time. While I
was at University I worked as a Research
Assistant and was involved in voluntary
environmental work. Immediately after
fi nishing my degree I gained a temporary
position at the City of Marion. I now have a
permanent position at Constellation Wines
as Environmental Offi cer.
applying for
flinders
Flinders University is open to everyone. We have a variety of entry
pathways available including:
• TAFE/VET qualifi cation
• Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
• Foundation/Bridging course
• Year 12 – SACE (or interstate equivalent)
• International Baccalaureate
Applications for undergraduate courses are made through the South
Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC). Applicants apply via
UniWeb at www.satac.edu.au and can obtain a copy of the SATAC
University Guide from newsagents.
Flinders offers two admissions cycles for undergraduate courses each year:
• The January (Semester 1) intake; applications open in August for
commencement the following year.
• Mid-year intake opens in mid May for commencement in July
(Semester 2) that year. Not all courses are offered mid-year.
Most courses at Flinders can be deferred.
During high school, I enrolled in subjects
which I found enjoyable, and wasn’t mindful
of whether these subjects would allow
me to enrol in university. After I completed
high school, I felt the best way to further
my education was to enrol in a TAFE course,
so I completed a Diploma of Information
Technology at Adelaide TAFE.
I enjoyed the TAFE course, but I still wanted to
further my education, knowledge and career
prospects, so I decided to enrol in university.
I found that the degree of Information
Technology at Flinders University not only
offered topics similar to TAFE, but also gave me
credit for previous topics I had completed at
TAFE. This allowed me to bypass several topics
within the course which had been covered by my
TAFE course. This made my overall experience of
university more enjoyable as it gave me more
time to spend on the topics I was enrolled in, and
also allowed me to enrol in other topics which
interested me. In addition to this, I was able to
complete my degree earlier than others who
hadn’t received credit for topics. I wouldn’t have
been able to do this if I hadn’t received credit for
my topics completed at TAFE.
study
Required GPA
Flinderslink is a guaranteed pathway program to the majority
of our courses. If you are studying at Flinders and wish to
change your course we will guarantee entry to another Flinders
course, provided you:
• complete a year or more of equivalent full-time study;
• achieve the required minimum grade point average (GPA);
and
• satisfy any course prerequisites.
This guaranteed entry program refl ects that some applicants
do not initially gain entry to their course of fi rst choice or may
want to change their career pathway. For example, if you don’t
initially get a place in Law, you are guaranteed a place in Law if
you complete a year of full-time study or equivalent in another
Flinders course such as the Bachelor of Arts and obtain a GPA
of 5.5 or more. The guaranteed pathway program does not
guarantee completion of the new course in minimum time,
but you can tailor a program of study that maximises the
benefi t of your earlier studies. You also retain your place in
your initial course.
Flinders course
I’m glad I attended TAFE before starting my
university degree. TAFE helped me clarify my
goals and fi nd the right university course for
me. It also made it easier for me to be accepted
into the course I chose. To gain entry into the
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing) I
had to provide a portfolio of my writing. I used
a selection of work I produced at TAFE and, once
I was accepted, I was able to apply for credit
transfer for one of my topics. This helped reduce
my study time and fees.
There are so many opportunities for further
study available to people with a TAFE
qualifi cation. Studying at TAFE also helped
me settle into university life. Now that I have
fi nished my degree I have won a scholarship to
complete a PhD in Creative Arts. Over the next
four years I plan to write my thesis and travel
overseas to gain more valuable experience. I am
so grateful I could use the opportunities both
TAFE and Flinders University has provided me to
expand my world and realise my life ambitions.
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
Potential applicants under the Adult Entry scheme are required
to sit the STAT. To be eligible to apply for the STAT you must:
• be aged 18 or over before 1 February 2010; and
• not hold a higher education award at diploma or higher
level, nor a TAFE degree.
If you have studied at higher education level, and in all
attempts you have accumulated more than the equivalent
of two full-time years of study, you must wait until two years
have elapsed since you were last enrolled in a higher education
course. For 2010 entry, this means your last year of enrolment
must have been 2007 or earlier.
Applications to sit the STAT should be made through SATAC.
The STAT is available for most courses. Some courses consider
personal competencies and/or employment experience. The
SATAC University Guide or SATAC website provides details
on the provision of a personal competencies statement and
relevant employment experience. More information on STAT
can be found at www.fl inders.edu.au/special-entry
Foundation Course
Flinders University Foundation Course allows people to
experience university study in a non-threatening environment.
It teaches them in clear and concrete terms how to be
successful students and introduces them to some of our
major fi elds of university study. The course is held in the early
evenings and is available online. There are no prerequisites for
entry and on successful completion students are able to apply
for admission to degree courses.
Indigenous Access Scheme
The Flinders University Indigenous Access Scheme provides
an alternative entry pathway for Indigenous Australians. The
scheme is available to Indigenous people who have completed
Year 12 or are over the age of 18 and may not have studied for
some time. For entry into the scheme, applicants are required
to complete an application detailing why they wish to enrol
in a particular course at Flinders, their career expectations,
educational background, relevant work and prior learning
experiences and community involvement. Further information
can be obtained from Yunggorendi First Nations Centre for
Higher education is an investment, one which offers
excellent professional career prospects and develops
graduate skills that can be applied in all aspects of life.
Study costs
All undergraduate courses at Flinders
University are Commonwealth
supported for eligible students. Being
a Commonwealth supported student
means the cost of studying at university
is shared between the Commonwealth
Government and you. It is important to
know that eligible students do not have
to pay upfront for their university fees.
Most eligible students choose to borrow
the money from the Commonwealth
Government, through the HECS-HELP
Scheme and pay the loan back once they
are earning over the declared income
threshold for that year ($43,157 in 2009).
For many students, this means that they
will not start repaying the loan until they
gain full-time employment.
Alternatively, you can pay the student
contribution upfront, in which case eligible
students will receive a 20% discount.
Eligible students
Students who are Australian citizens
or holders of permanent humanitarian
visas are eligible for a HECS-HELP
loan and do not have to pay their fees
upfront. Permanent residents and New
Zealand citizens must normally pay
their fees upfront and are not eligible
for a discount.
How are student
contribution amounts
calculated?
The table (page 21) shows the annual
student contribution for a normal fulltime
study load (36 units) by subject
area. Student contribution amounts are
charged based on the topics you enrol in
and what band these topics fall under.
Each topic is typically worth 3, 4.5, 6 or
9 units. A three-year degree at Flinders
is 108 units. Most students will study
topics from two or more of these bands.
For example, if you are undertaking a
double degree in Education and Science,
your education topics are charged at the
national priority rate, whilst science topics
are charged at the rate for Band 2. This
means that you would incur a student
contribution amount of $663 for a fi rstyear
education topic (4.5 units), but $531
for a fi rst-year science topic (4.5 units).
More information
Full details of the HECS-HELP scheme,
your eligibility and repayment options
are available at the Going to Uni website
www.goingtouni.gov.au
If you are unsure of your eligibility for
HECS-HELP or would like additional
information on how this is calculated
please contact Student Finance Services on
8201 3143 or email fees@fl inders.edu.au
Other costs
Most courses require textbooks or
related materials. The cost of a book can
vary but may be in excess of $100.
Flinders has bookshops on campus that
supply the required texts, both new
and second hand. Multiple copies of
some set texts are also available in the
library. Many students also sell their
books second hand, which can assist in
reducing the cost of required texts.
Some courses may require the purchase
of additional items such as uniforms for
clinical placements in a nursing course
or laboratory coats and safety glasses for
science courses.
Some topics will require fi eldwork and
excursions or out-of city placements.
This can include expenses such as
transport, accommodation and food. There
is some assistance from Flinders for such
activities but allowances should be made
for these costs. You can fi nd out about
these costs when you research the course.
