4 what’s it like studying at fl inders?
For most students, study at Flinders will involve a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, plus time for individual study. Depending on your course, you may also have laboratory or practical classes, fi eldwork or work placements. Lectures Lectures are given by various members of teaching staff. They are prepared presentations on a particular topic and are usually given in large lecture theatres to the whole student group. Lectures are an important part of the topics you will study and give you the basis for your own reading and research. Tutorials In tutorials you will meet in small groups with academic staff and other students in a somewhat informal setting. They give you an opportunity to explore and clarify what you have learned in lectures and try out new ideas by asking questions and joining in discussions. Work Integrated Learning Work Integrated Learning gives you an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you learn in lectures and tutorials to practical situations. This can include practical work in small teams where you will carry out and report on laboratory work or fi eldwork, or individual work placement in an industry, government or community setting. Group work You may also be involved in group work in which you collaborate with other students on a project, activity or presentation. This encourages you to communicate, share expertise and tackle tasks that you would not be able to undertake alone. Individual study Your independent reading, research and study, guided by lecturers and tutors, will enable you to explore topics in greater depth. This is especially important when you are preparing for an assignment, an essay, a tutorial/seminar presentation or an exam. 5
