self aided in the rescue of Mr. Garrison from the<br />
crowd, and in placing him within the south door of<br />
the Old State House, which was at once closed.<br />
Immediately afterwards the Mayor appeared at<br />
an open window over the door, from which he ear<br />
nestly addressed the excited populace, advising and<br />
commanding them to disperse and go peaceably to<br />
their homes, avowing his determination to main<br />
tain the peace of the city at all hazards, and notify<br />
ing them in the most emphatic terms that, if any<br />
attempt should be made to force an entry to the<br />
building, it should be done only over his body.<br />
At the close of his address he was heartily and<br />
very generally cheered.<br />
An intimation having been given by some of<br />
the constables to those who had aided the authori<br />
ties that a carriage had been ordered to the north<br />
door, and that assistance might be required there,<br />
we immediately repaired to that point, where we<br />
found the constables in the act of putting Mr. Gar<br />
rison in a carriage, and the crowd rapidly increas<br />
ing, and endeavoring to prevent it, some trying to<br />
