Currently, this sector is comprised of a large number of start-ups,<br />
spun-out from leading academic research groups, and a growing<br />
number of new business units within the materials and fine<br />
chemicals multinati<strong>on</strong>als.<br />
While the number of nanotools and nanomaterials companies,<br />
indigenous or multinati<strong>on</strong>al, currently based in Ireland is<br />
relatively small; the Task Force is aware of a significant number of<br />
individuals and groups seeking funding to establish start-ups in<br />
this area, and a number of multinati<strong>on</strong>al companies seeking to<br />
locate in Ireland. For reas<strong>on</strong>s of commercial c<strong>on</strong>fidentiality, it is<br />
not possible to describe these opportunities in more details.<br />

Deerac Fluidics has developed an innovative liquid handling technology<br />
designed to have a broad range of applicati<strong>on</strong>s. The proprietary spot-<strong>on</strong><br />
technology allows for the depositi<strong>on</strong> of a wide range of 20 nL to 20 µL.<br />
This product has been developed to meet a str<strong>on</strong>g market drive in the<br />
pharmaceutical, biotechnology and analytical sectors towards<br />
miniaturisati<strong>on</strong>, the use of smaller volumes of reagents and biological<br />
materials.<br />
The driving forces for this shift are two fold. Firstly the reducti<strong>on</strong> of<br />
operating costs by lowering the volume of expensive reagents and sec<strong>on</strong>dly<br />
reducing product development schedules. Deerac Fluidics is supplying an<br />
enabling soluti<strong>on</strong> to address this need and has developed a global market<br />
leading business in the genomics and proteomics areas.<br />
