Due to the maturity of the industry, it is being compelled by<br />

legislati<strong>on</strong> and public opini<strong>on</strong> to move actively towards the key<br />

goals of (1) cost reducti<strong>on</strong> in the provisi<strong>on</strong> of new housing, (2)<br />

reduced envir<strong>on</strong>mental impact, (3) reduced energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

in manufacture and lifetime, (4) improved durability, (5) reduced<br />

maintenance costs and (6) significant weight reducti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The key elements of this roadmap are as follows:<br />

to accelerate acceptance of innovative building technologies;<br />

to create an envir<strong>on</strong>ment that allows for a c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

systems soluti<strong>on</strong>;<br />

to industrialise the building process;<br />

to improve the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of buildings; and<br />

to move more building to the factory.<br />

6.8.3 Intersecti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>Nanotechnology</strong> Roadmap<br />

Overlap with fundamental material science has led to<br />

nanotechnology being increasingly applied in c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

materials research and development, in particular, nanotechnology<br />

relating to plastics and polymers.<br />

Cement is the most widely used c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> material. The<br />

synthesis and use of reactive and n<strong>on</strong>-reactive nanoparticles and<br />

their role in cement binders, c<strong>on</strong>trolled releases of admixtures<br />

and new approaches to c<strong>on</strong>crete reinforcement are crucial. It is<br />

expected that the additi<strong>on</strong> of nanoparticles to c<strong>on</strong>crete will<br />

improve the c<strong>on</strong>trol of c<strong>on</strong>crete microstructure bey<strong>on</strong>d what is<br />

possible today with existing technologies. Therefore the product<br />

should be more durable in terms of its resistance and lifespan.<br />

The programming of time-release chemical admixtures in c<strong>on</strong>crete<br />

will provide maximum effectiveness at the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> site and<br />

cement binders reinforced with nanofibres will impede crack<br />

formati<strong>on</strong> and growth. It is important however, not to limit a<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong> to cement/c<strong>on</strong>crete and recognise the importance of<br />

plastics, glass and metals in the industry<br />
