In 2004 Aristo-Craft will introduce the 

RoadRailer System. The Aristo-Craft 

RoadRailer model is based on the 

“DuraPlate” van currently produced by 

Wabash National Corp. 

(www.wabashnational.com), the manufacturer 

of the RoadRailer System. If you visit 

their website, you will find extensive information 

regarding the RoadRailers, including 

trailer types, operation manuals, and a marketing 

video. Wabash National Corp. has 

been extremely helpful in the development 

of the Aristo-Craft model and provided information 

and the photos used in this article. 

The theory behind the RoadRailer is simple; 

remove the entire railcar from the train and 

recapture freight traffic lost to the highways. 

With the RoadRailer there is no freight car, 

the trailer rides directly on the rails with its 

own dedicated set of railroad wheels. 

The intermodal flat car while more common 

then the RoadRailer has several key disadvantages. 

One is the slack action involved 

with the cars. Slack action can cause damage 

to products in the trailer. Between railcars 

like flats, there is cushioning and fore 

and aft movement between the cars from the

erates (speeds up or slows down) and stops 

the distance between cars changes. Slack 

action may only be a few inches or a few feet 

between two cars but slack action is additive. 

In a long train, the locomotives may have 

moved a few hundred feet before the last car 

starts moving. When train speed changes, 

and slack action occurs, the trailing car is instantly 

brought to the speed of the car in 

front of it. 

With RoadRailers there is very little slack. 

Each trailer is connected tightly to the one in 

front preventing slack action. The entire train 

essentially acts as one unit where the last 

trailer starts moving at the same time as the 

first. Slack is virtually eliminated with only a 

few inches in the entire train. 

Close tight coupling means little slack action 

Operating a fleet of intermodal flat cars to 

carry trailers for modern intermodal service 

represents a significant expense for the railroads. 

Costs of flat cars include maintenance, 

storage when not in use, repositioning the 

flats to locations where they are needed, and 

the weight of the flat cars. 

Intermodal flat cars, like any other railcars, 

require continual maintenance and repairs. 

Maintenance is a significant cost to railroads. 

A large percentage of a railroad’s budget is 

dedicated to maintenance. Reducing maintenance 

cost is very beneficial, particularly in 

the highly competitive intermodal business. 

The RoadRailer greatly reduces maintenance 

cost. There is no need for maintenance and 

repairs of a large fleet of flat cars. Instead, 

there is only the trailer and bogies to maintain 

and repair. The trailer needs maintenance 

regardless if it it’s a RoadRailer or conventional 

trailer van. The bogies are basically 

just a freight car truck with a bolster. Effectively, 

instead of the entire freight car, the 

railroad only has to maintain the freight car 

truck. 

RoadRailer Bogy 

Railroads often have significant issues dealing 

with cars when they are empty. Flat cars 

used for trailers typically cannot be left in the 

yard where they where unloaded to wait for 

their next load. The empty flats will be in the 

way of the next train of loaded flat cars arriving 

in the yard. Large storage yards or long 

sidings are needed to store empty flat cars 

while they wait for their next load. In some 

cases, trains are operated strictly with empty 

flats because there is no storage space for 

the cars. These trains can get delayed in route 

and not return to the yard for the flat cars to 

be loaded for their next destination. This can 

cause delays for intermodal trains that run 

on very tight schedules in a very competitive 

business. 

With the RoadRailer, there is no flat car to 

store when empty. There is only the trailer 

and the bogy. The empty trailer gets returned 

to the owner who will have it reloaded and 

returned to the railroad as quickly as they 

possibly can. The bogies are small, about 

the size of the average automobile. Bogies 

can be stored off the tracks and stacked. For 

trailersand bogies a parking lot would suffice 

for storage. Therefore, large storage yards 

are not needed nor will there be a need for 

“empty bogy trains”, like there is for empty 

flat cars. 

Often flat cars are not where they are needed 

and need to be repositioned or moved to another 

location. Empty cars can be run in a 

train or entire trains of empty flat cars are run 

to bring cars to where they are needed. Like 

with any other rail car, the railroads do not 

profit from moving the intermodal flat car, it is

the trailer and its contents that earn the railroad 

money. The repositioning of the cars 

can be expensive. Since the railroad only 

makes money when the car is loaded, they 

are essentially losing money whenever they 

have to move an empty car. 

While RoadRailer trailers and bogies may 

also need repositioning, the cost is significantly 

smaller. Particularly when the 

RoadRailers are not owned by the railroad, 

the railroad gets paid weather the trailer is 

loaded or not. Bogies are easily repositioned 

by loading them into empty trailers that are 

being sent to the same destination. 

An empty car can weigh between 25 and 75 

tons or possibly more. Half the weight of a 

train can easily be the cars alone. Extra locomotives 

are needed to run trains. More fuel 

is used and additional wear and tear occurs 

to the tracks. 

The RoadRailer removes the flat cars from 

the train. The weight is therefore the load 

that as far as the railroad is concerned includes 

the trailer. Fewer locomotives are 

needed and less fuel is burned. This translates 

into a huge economic advantage to operate 

RoadRailers. 

Origional Chesapeake & Ohio RoadRailer 

Chesapeake & Ohio created early RoadRailer 

type trailers to add to the rear of some of their 

passenger trains. These trailers road on a 

single axle wheelset permanently attached 

underneath in the rear between the trailer 

wheels and bumper. C&O used these trailers 

in an attempt to recapture express freight traffic 

being rapidly lost to highways. The practice 

was short lived and before long the C&O 

gave up the concept. 

By the 1980’s the RoadRailer concept found 

new life. Railroads like Illinois Central Gulf 

and Union Pacific started utilizing 

RoadRailers for priority customers. The 

RoadRailers of the 1980’s where 45’ trailers

with significant modifications. These modifications 

included an airbag system to raise 

and lower the trailer tires, tongue on the front 

of the trailer, and a “mail box” like slot and pin 

under the doors on the rear of the trailer. Like 

the earlier RoadRailers of the C&O, the trailers 

continued to carry the single axle wheelset 

for rail operations as part of the trailer construction. 

1980's style RoadRailer 

RoadRailers of the early to mid 1980’s had 

many limitations that prevented them from 

achieving wide spread success. Like the early 

RoadRailer of the C&O, trailers carried a 

singled axle railroad wheel around at all times. 

This significantly increased the empty weight 

of the trailer greatly reducing the load it could 

carry over roads and highways. Since conventional 

trailers could carry more products, 

it was more economical to ship trailers on flat 

cars or by highway then by a RoadRailer. 

1980's RoadRailer with Tractor 

Early RoadRailers had no train breaks. With 

most trains, every car has airbrakes which 

act in concert to help bring the train to a stop. 

With early RoadRailers, engineers had to depend 

on locomotive breaks alone to control 

the train. Train lengths had to be kept short 

as a result. Economics demand that as many 

cars as possible be placed in the train. 

RoadRailers being limited to short trains further 

reduced their economic viability. 

A dedicated trailer acted as the transition 

between the locomotive and trailers. This 

trailer typically could not be used to haul 

freight. Instead it carried tools and supplies 

for the RoadRailer train. If something failed 

with this trailer, the entire train was in jeopardy. 

The trailer could not be removed and 

the locomotive could not be coupled to the 

next trailer. 

There where additional operating limitations. 

Early RoadRailers could only be pulled. They 

could not be safely pushed except for possibly 

at extremely low speeds. Furthermore, a 

locomotive could not be coupled to the last 

trailer for switching moves in a yard. 

Because of limitations like these, Illinois Central 

and Union Pacific did not have success 

with RoadRailers. Norfolk Southern eventually 

took over RoadRailer operations and 

started marketing their service under the 

“Triple Crown” name. With many innovative 

improvements by Wabash National, the 

RoadRailer’s manufacturer, the modern 

RoadRailer has overcome the shortcomings 

associated with earlier RoadRailer-type trailers 

and has been successful for Norfolk 

Southern other railroads and trucking companies. 

While keeping the tongue and pin style trailerto-trailer 

connection system of early trailers, 

the modern RoadRailer differs in many ways 

from earlier versions. Primarily, the modern 

RoadRailer does not carry its rail wheels 

around when it is on roads and highways. 

Instead, the trailer sits on a bogy when on

rails. The trailer suspension can be lowered, 

raising the trailer, to allow the bogy to be 

placed under the rear of the trailer. The suspension 

of the trailer is then raised, allowing 

the trailer to rest on the body and the trailer 

wheels to clear the rails. The result is the 

overall weight of the trailer is only a few hundred 

pounds heavier then conventional trailers.

Forward: When I saw what Marty Cozad 

was doing with a cordless Black & Decker 

Drill and an Aristo Craft F unit, I knew that 

this was perhaps the consummate kit bash. 

As part of an effort to bring some new blood 

into the Aristo Craft Insider, I convinced 

Marty to take some photographs and do an 

article on this merger of B&D and Aristo Craft. 

Marty sent me a rough draft and the photos 

and here are the results.

Marty: 

Sometimes an idea floats around in you head 

until the pieces start coming together. For 

sometime I had this idea of building a modern 

western style rotary snowplow. This is one 

of those ideas that just roll’s around in your 

head until you either act or charge it off as a 

moment of insanity. 

Some of the first questions that I had to resolve 

before construction could start were: 

What size fan blade to use? 

How is the fan blade to be constructed? 

How to have a self propelled unit? 

Build or buy the housing for the blade that 

would be strong enough to stand the pressure? 

What type and RPM of motor to use? 

I stumbled onto a sale where I got a Black & 

Decker 18 Volt drill, 2 batteries, and charger 

for a whopping $89.00. I bought the 18 volt 

drill wanting the low profile battery it uses 

for my battery cars, which I have already made 

to use these batteries. Which left a drill with 

no batteries. 

Next Rocky a friend of mine told me he had a 

reasonably priced used Aristo Craft FB unit 

for sale. Then as the wheels started to spin 

in my head, I talked with my local hardware 

dealer about my need and he showed me the 

vacuum cleaner replacement blades that he 

carried. He had a 4-inch blade that looked 

like what I needed. I had some 4-inch PVC 

pipe that I could use to build my own housing. 

Great! That solved that problem. 

My next step was to cut some 1/8-inch PVC 

sheet goods that I had bought for building 

structures to build the housing. 

Once all the pieces were on the table I removed 

the shell from the FB unit and removed 

the plastic motor, fan and smoke unit to make 

room for the battery and drill motor. 

I then removed the drill motor & chuck from 

the drill housing. At this point I started with 

some “for sure” things like removing the front 

coupler and wiring in my RC plugs so the 

unit will MU with my SD-45 helpers. I then 

wired in an on/off toggle switch for the blade 

motor on the lower outside of the frame for 

easy access during snowy weather running.


The biggest challenge was getting the drill 

set low enough so that the blade shaft would 

be close enough to the track for the blade to 

catch the snow. 

During this time I posted my idea on a largescale 

train site looking for information on rotary 

snowplows. As usual lots of tips and 

photos came in, the most important bit of information 

was the real blades have cutters 

on them. This permits the blade to cut show 

and let it fall into the blades and then be blown 

out away from the track. This is a key factor 

in the design. The Drill has a good torque, 

and a clutch to protect the mechanism if any 

sticks get caught in the blades. 

After mounting the drill to the floor of the FB 

unit I decided to cut out part of the end of the 

FB shell so that I could lift it off to service the 

drill motor and chuck easily, yet not totally 

destroy the shell if this idea did not work. 

It is important to keep the fan, shaft, and 

drill in line to cut down on vibration. 

My first fan housing was basically thrown 

together as kind of a proof of concept thing 

to see if this would even work. I used sawdust 

from my table saw to test it and it worked! 

However the pitch of the blades had to be 

bent as to make the dust go out the hole rather 

than in front of the blade. I heated each blade 

with a torch and bent them as needed. After 

priming and painting the test housing, I de- 

cided to name the snowplow “The Rocky 

Rotary” After Rocky who I bought the FB 

unit from. 

It’s fun to create themes on your outdoor railroad, 

plus the challenge of “keeping the line 

open”. We run trains all year round with many 

nice days in winter here in the Midwest. It’s 

fun because there is no yard work to be done.

Note from the editor: 

This unit resembles the construction on a 

couple of Union Pacific Snow blowers that I 

saw setting on static display at a grade 

crossing in Hermiston, Oregon back about 

10 years ago. I was out taking a walk one 

evening and just happened to come across 

these that were part of a historical display. 

I would like to point out a couple of safety 

items here. The torque on an 18-volt 

cordless drill motor can and will remove a 

finger. So can a metal fan blade. So watch 

where you put your fingers and other appendages 

when using this item, this is functional 

item and like any power tool intended 

to be used with respect. 

For those of you who want to duplicate this 

but are afraid of the fan and motor, I would 

find a suitable computer type cookie fan similar 

to those used to cool the Aristo Craft TE. 

However I would not try to move any snow 

with that fan. - Ron

JJ Productions Announces Their Second Regional Large Scale Train Show 

Over the past couple of months you may have 

been seeing bits and pieces and teasers on 

this. We have set the wheels in motion and 

the contracts have been signed for a third 

regional Large-Scale train show. This show 

will take its place along side the Queen Mary 

Show and the East Coast Large Scale Train 

exclusively serving the Large-Scale 

hobbiests. This show will be known as the 

Mid West Large Scale Train Show 

(MWLSTS) and will be held in the Orr Building 

at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, 

IL. The show will be the 21st, 22nd, 

and 23 rd of May 2004, the third weekend in of 

the month (weekend before Memorial Day 

Weekend). The show hours have been tentatively 

set as 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, 9:00 

AM to 5 PM on Saturday and 10 AM to 4 PM

The Ramada Limited North at 3281 Northfield 

Drive, Springfield has been selected as the 

Official Headquarters for the Mid West Large 

Scale Train Show. The Ramada Limited North 

is located just five minutes from the show 

and just off of I-55 at exit 100B. For those of 

you arriving by air the Ramada provides 

shuttle service to from the Springfield Airport. 

A special show room rate of $62.00 plus applicable 

taxes per night is in effect. Included 

in the room rate is a complementary Continental 

breakfast that includes hot items. For 

those of you with Children to entertain the 

Ramada has an indoor pool and also features 

a microwave and refrigerator in each room. A

Cell Lead Acid batteries for two years now. 

While they have been well received, battery

The physical size of 2 1/8" long, 1 3/8" wide 

and 2 1/2" tall allows you to fit the Li-on batteries 

inside a locomotive, tender or trailing 

battery car of almost any type. We supply a 

wire and plug ready to connect to the battery 

plugs on Aristo-Craft locomotives. A simple 

Velcro connection will keep the batteries in 

place during operation and make them very 

easy to remove for recharging. Trailing battery 

cars are the most economical way to do 

battery operation because batteries and re- 

ceivers are not required for every locomotive. 

Because Li-on batteries are relatively 

light, 10.2 oz, the battery car will not require 

ball bearing wheels for support, as would a 

car with Gel Cell batteries. 

The style number for the Li-on batteries is

pack at 21.5 volts and 2000 m.a. The charger 

is CRE-55620 with a MSRP of $23. The charger 

is an overnight charger, though obviously 

we will look for a fast charger in the future. 

Coupling CREST Li-on battery operation 

with CREST Train Engineer on-board radio 

control makes for a simple operation, though 

we feel track power with Stainless Steel track 

is a viable solution. Track power is good for 

powering signal and other accessories and 

can be used in conjunction with battery 

power providing the locomotives are electrically 

isolated from the rails. For those of you 

that wish to use on-board power and radio 

control CREST Li-on batteries is the most effective 

way to operate Aristo-Craft Trains.

finished. We are just waiting production time 

for a projected spring delivery. I have posted 

a picture of the RoadRailer® System itself to 

remind you of the pairing of these two concepts 

for a great layout look. We’ve noticed 

many automobiles on layouts, but very few 

larger trucks and we think you will see that 

the variety of Piccavilla trucks models is a 

great addition to any layout. Who isn’t impressed 

with the 18 wheelers we all see on 

our highways that are a part of everyday life.

Ron’s Ramblings:

Clarification: 

In the last Ron’s Ramblings I made a statement 

in the first part of that article that I was 

not an employee of Aristo-Craft. To clarify 

the statement, I will retire from my current 

position sometime Between the 1 st of June 

and the 1st of September 2005. Shortly after 

that I will join the Aristo-Craft team. I’ll leave 

the rest of the official announcement to Lewis. 

I must say that the thought of working in a 

hobby that has brought my wife and I so much 

enjoyment over the past ten years is an exciting 

proposition. It has been a long road but 

a lot of fun from that first large-scale purchase 

in 1993 to our present state. I will also 

continue to be associated with J.J. Productions 

and I am in the process of putting together 

a second Large Scale Train Show, see 

article on page 8, and perhaps a third and 

fourth regional annual Large Scale Train 

Show. 

Some Thoughts on this Past Fall: 

By now most of you have enjoyed what little 

summer we did have, here in the East we had 

rain just about every day of the spring and 

early summer and the two to three times a 

week during the rest of the summer. This fall 

saw the event of Hurricane Issabel here one 

the east coast. Fortunately for most of us we 

suffered only minor damage. We had several 

club members that suffered some extreme 

damage and they will be sometime getting 

back to full operations. 

This has been a good summer for the Crooked 

and Weedy, Sue and I took delivery of two 

new Mikado’s and two FA ABA sets all for 

the Baltimore and Ohio subdivision. Also by 

the time you read this a pair of New Pacific’s 

and a pair of Dash-9’s for B&O and CSX service 

should have arrived. Two FA/FB pairs 

went to a Railroad in Pennsylvania where we 

are sure that they will see a lot of good service 

over the years to come. We had to replace 

two of our first bridges this summer, 

these bridges spanned a low spot between 

two ponds on the layout, these were replaced 

by three two foot metal girder bridges. Nice 

looking effect, especially with the stainless 

steel rail running over them. 

Stainless Steel comes to the 

Crooked & Weedy: 

Stainless Steel rail has been an ongoing upgrade 

on the Crooked and Weedy Railway 

since early spring. We are close to the half 

way mark now and it will be all down here 

from now. Once all of the major lines are done 

work will start on yards and sidings. We will 

start on swapping out the switches next year. 

For those of you who have not yet started 

laying track, you should consider starting out 

with stainless steel. For those of you who 

like me have a layout that was laid before 

stainless steel now is the time to start planning 

your expansions in stainless steel, or 

even replacing damaged track or like Sue and 

I all of your track with stainless steel. 

For a fact the stainless steel is not as conductive 

as brass, that is a law of physics that 

wont change. What is also a fact is that now 

matter how conductive brass is as a rail material 

if the electrical current cannot get through 

the non-conductive layer of oxidation on the 

top of the rail then it does not matter how 

conductive the brass is. Simple fact is that 

Stainless Steel does not oxidize, so that oxidation 

barrier does not come between the 

wheels of your locomotive and the top of the 

track. Overall I have found that the performance 

of the Stainless Steel is superior to the 

Brass. You only have to make about one trip 

around with an Aristo-Craft track cleaner to 

get the bird droppings and other gifts of nature 

and your ready to run. 

And besides Real trains don’t run on yellow 

rail, so don’t let oxidation come between your 

locomotives and rails. 

Ron on TV: 

Back in August, Sue and I made a weekend 

trip to Bethlehem, PA and I spent a very enjoyable 

weekend with Bob Metz of Train Time. 

Train Time is a syndicated Cable TV show 

with a viewing audience of over 3.5 million 

viewers in an area that has over 7 million cable 

subscribers. Part of the segments was an 

interview with me, and the rest was spent with 

me doing tune up tips on different products 

and how to upgrade some of the older products. 

We took some time and explained the 

mysteries of how the springs get into an 

Aristo-Craft Bettendorf freight truck. We also

did a couple of Hot New Product segments 

on the New FA/FB’s and the New Aristo-Craft 

Mikado. A lot of hot outdoor action of the 

Mike at work was shot, no load on the Mike 

as they wanted to just show the Mike without 

distracting anything away from it. I had 

to check the carton when I left for home to 

make sure that it had a Mike in it and not 

rocks. Some of you have already seen the 

first Train Time segments with me starting 

earlier this fall on most of the Cable Stations 

in the North Eastern US. Check with your 

local cable operators. More segments will be 

done at a later date, and we will try to include 

a lot of the topics that many of you ask about. 

If your not getting Train Time on your local 

Cable TV channels contact your cable service 

provider. Please be kind with your comments, 

I am old and can’t take rejection. 

Time to Plant Evergreens: 

Now that most of the last of the real warm 

weather fall weather is behind us, it is now a 

good time to plant those Dwarf Alberta Spruce 

Trees or any other evergreens. I have planted 

these as late as mid January and had the best 

luck with them. First of all if the ground can 

be worked it is not too late to plant them. As 

long as you follow most of the guidelines on 

how to work the dirt balls on the plants and 

give them at least a gallon of water for each 

foot of height once a week for the first two 

months these trees will thrive. Your not competing 

with the heat of the summer and the 

hydration last longer. Just make sure that the 

root ball is just below the surface of the soil, 

and that there are no air pockets around the 

root ball. Two of the nicest trees in my yard 

started out as Live Christmas Trees and were 

planted right after Christmas and all but forgotten 

about as far as care goes. 

A Word on Layout Etiquette! 

Here is an observation that Sue and I made 

recently! Some folks are just down right pigs 

when it comes to the way they act when visiting 

other folk’s layouts! 

We participated along with two other club 

families in a three-day open house period over 

the Labor Day weekend. It may have been 

my last open house, if Sue has her way it 

was. At all three open houses folks left empty 

bottles and cups sit all over the place including 

the layout. Drinks were spilt and not

There is no longer a dedicated trailer to act as 

a transition between the locomotive and the 

trailers. Instead a specialized bogy called a 

CouplerMate is used. The CouplerMate has 

a conventional coupler at one end with a pin 

and 5th wheel to mate with the lead trailer’s

end. This allows any trailer to lead. If there is 

a failure in the lead trailer, it can be entirely 

removed from the train and the CouplerMate 

attached to the second trailer in the train.

A standard railroad type air break system exists 

in the modern RoadRailer system. The 

bogies are equipped with air brakes with each 

trailer containing the necessary air lines to 

ensure breaking throughout the entire train.

Having train breaking allows far longer trains 

to be run. RoadRailer trains can now be as 

long as 125 trailers. 

Many of the modern RoadRailers are also 

equipped with a kingpin in the rear of the 

trailer. This allows for the CouplerMate to be 

attached to the back of the trailer. There are

three significant advantages of being able to 

attach a CouplerMate to the rear of a trailer. 

First, RoadRailer trailers can be run in groups 

or “blocks” in a train. Blocks of trailers can 

be picked up or dropped off at different locations 

without requiring breaking up and reassembling 

the trailers themselves. A second 

benefit is the trailers can be run backwards. 

Third, with a CouplerMate on the rear 

of the train, a locomotive can couple to it 

making switching easier in rail yards.

A benefit from all these improvements was 

the ability to run blocks of RoadRailer trailers 

behind other trains. Amtrak extensively exploited 

this ability with strings of RoadRailer 

trailers coupled to the rear of their passenger 

trains. Shortly before the BNSF merger, Santa 

Fe experimented with RoadRailers by placing 

them behind some of their intermodal trains. 

RoadRailer development continues with different 

trailer types beyond the 53’ DuraPlate


trailer that the Aristo-Craft model is based 

on. Wabash has developed the shorter 

“PupRailer” for use in less then truckload type 

services. Other trailers include the 

“AutoRailer” for shipping finished automobiles, 

a mail van trailer with side doors, and 

the “ReeferRailer” a refrigerated trailer. Beyond 

existing trailers, Wabash can develop a 

flat trailer version of the RoadRailer, container 

versions and tank trailer versions. Just about 

any trailer type can be adapted to RoadRailer 

use.

Because of the flexibility and economics of 

the modern RoadRailer System, many railroads 

and trucking companies are currently 

utilizing or experimenting with them all over

The price on this is still tentative but it is 

expected to be $21-22.00 including all taxes 

and tips. The Banquet will be pre sold in advance 

and will be limited to 50 persons. This 

is your chance to come and meet with some 

of the folks from Aristo-Craft and have a nice 

meal with fellow Large Scale enthusiast. Once 

a firm price is worked up I will start taking 

reservations. The reservations must be followed 

up within 10 days by a check or money 

order to reserve your tickets. Once this is 

announced you will have to act fast to ensure 

that you get tickets. 

Why Springfield Illinois? 

This question has come up several times. We 

were looking for a location with a transportation 

hub and within a 4-7 hour driving distance 

of many Midwest population centers. 

It also has to have the ability to allow the 

show to grow as we did with the ECLSTS, 

and had to be affordable. By affordable I 

mean we had to be able to charge a fair price 

for display space and admission and not walk 

away with a lot of debit. Our goal is to provide 

an affordable, fun and safe show environment 

for the attendee and vendor. 

By the time that you read this over 1/3 of the 

Vendor space will have been spoken for, but 

there are still many good locations available. 

We are still looking for clubs to display at the 

show and for individuals to present seminars. 

We will be soliciting vendors and modular 

clubs for this event. If you’re interested in 

being a vendor or participating as a display

There are still some things in the planning 

stages. If all goes well for the kick off of this

cleaned up, and trash left everywhere. I don’t 

mean just a random cup here and there, but 

groups of cups and other trash. Bottle caps 

were thrown on the ground as well trash that 

was just tossed beside waste cans provided 

for that purpose. 

Picky? I guess you could say that, but these 

folks were all large scalers! They should 

know how much work goes into putting together 

a layout. They should also have a 

clue as to how much it takes to clean up a 

mess like that. We have had many non-train 

people to the house that did not make a mess 

like that. Perhaps it has been our weather but 

it sure seems like folks are forgetting their 

Manners when visiting another person’s layout. 

We normally host two to three big running 

sessions a year and never have this kind 

of mess. We always have those that help, 

the Crooked and Weedy Railway has over 50 

locomotives and 230+ cars that have to be 

put on and off the track, so it takes a crew of 

dedicated friends to help get all or most of it 

on and off the tracks. Keep in mind when 

visiting another person’s layout, take nothing 

but photographs, leave nothing but foot 

prints and see if you can help with the clean 

up. This will go a long way in making sure 

that others will feel inclined to have an open 

house and promote the hobby.

Yes the East Coast Large Scale Train Show is 

Just Around the corner! This year’s show 

promises to be the best yet. Sue and I have 

been hard at work setting up the new show in 

Springfield and still trying to make sure that 

the ECLSTS is as good or better than the last 

show. 

New Items News & 

Editorial 

Much has happened since the previous issue 

of The Insider. We have received samples 

of the Dash-9, the New Pacific, and “test shot” 

samples of the 2-8-8-2 Mallet in September. 

During the same period we also received an 

engineering sample of the RoadRailer. 

We have received samples of both versions 

of the Dash-9, the wide cab and the “Gull 

Wing” cab. See the Aristo-Catalog at 

aristocraft.com for a complete list of roadnames. 

Latest word from the factory is production 

of the Dash-9 has commenced. They 

are expected to be finished in November and 

shipped in December. As of this writing, I do 

not know which roadnames will be here first. 

We do expect to start receiving the Dash-9’s 

in January. 

Production of the New Pacific is completed 

and waiting to be shipped. They should be 

shipped by early November with delivery 

around Christmas. No word as to which Pacific 

roadnames will be shipped first. While 

you are checking aristocraft.com for the 

Dash-9 roadnames, take the time to look at 

the Pacific’s also. 

While not received in time to be displayed at 

the Chicago Hobby Show as hoped, the Mallet 

test shots where shown at the Hobby Visions 

Show in Las Vegas and the TCA in York, 

PA. The Mallet test shots will also be displayed 

at the First Frost Show in Allentown, 

PA and the Train Fest in Milwaukee, WI on 

November 8 th & 9 th . Pictures are in the In-Development 

section of aristocraft.com. 

Until now, we have only received one engineering 

sample of the RoadRailer. This prevented 

us from displaying it at many shows 

or preforming extensive tests. Further testing 

will be done when additonal RoadRailers 

become available. The sample came with the 

CouplerMate and bogy along with three different 

drawbar tongue lengths to allow for 

different diameter curves. The RoadRailers 

allows for raised or lowered trailer tires, landing 

gear and rear bumper. 

I extensively tested samples of the Dash-9 

and Pacific to ensure proper function and try 

to find any remaining bugs in the locomotives. 

Both locomotives have been tested 

and found to be fine apart from some minor 

and easily resolved issues that had no effect

on production. The Dash-9 runs fabulously 

with the SD-45. The Pacific has proven to 

run as well and perform similar to the 2-8-2 

Mikado. The New Pacific proved it has no 

problems handling all 6 Aristo-Craft heavyweights 

because it pulled 8 to 10 heavyweight 

passenger cars in testing. 

Much of the testing I did of the Dash-9 and 

Pacific was done on the 180’ long G-Scale 

railroad at the Whippany Railroad Museum 

in Whippany, NJ. The G-Scale railroad is 

operated and maintained by Artie Jones, who 

provided significant help and “is a bit of a 

legend in these parts”. Artie is one of those 

guys who seems to know everybody and 

everybody knows him or knows someone 

who knows him. You may recognize his name 

if you have the PRR Stock Car as “Arthur 

Jones Sausage Co.” While I am thanking 

people who helped with the testing I would 

like to thank John Vansiver, and Lenny Harlos. 

John Vansiver happily provided 48 large modern 

freight cars for testing the Dash-9 at 

Whippany. Lenny Harlos enthusiastically 

tested the Pacific. It may have been frustration 

expressed when he failed miserably during 

failure testing because the Pacific failed 

to fail. 

I also tested the Pacific and the Dash-9 with 

the RoadRailer at the Model Railroad Club, 

Inc. in Union, NJ. The locomotives and 

RoadRailer passed tests there also. The 

RoadRailer ran with the Dash-9 for many 

hours without a single problem. The Pacific 

was performance tested next to a Mikado and 

demonstrated it could handle the same train 

put behind the Mikado. 

While on the subject of The Model Railroad 

Club, let me take a moment to do a shameless 

plug for the organization I have been a member 

of for nearly 18 years. Our annual show 

is held every year the three weekends following 

Thanksgiving. We have HO, N, and G.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC SANTA FE SD-45 

In the 1980’s the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific intended to merge. A 

bright color scheme of Southern Pacific red, Santa Fe yellow, and black 

was created. Santa Fe SD-45 #5394 emerged from the paint shop 

painted in the new color scheme and a bold “SPSF” emblazoned on the 

sides. This locomotive was possibly the only SD-45 to wear the SPSF 

lettering. The SPSF lettering was only on the locomotive for a short time 

making SD-45 #5394 truly unique.
