Editor’s Note:
Howdy fellow Striders,
What a great night it was, back on January 21st at the Annual
Awards Banquet. To be surrounded by such great runners and
friends, in the midst of such a snowy winter, was a wonderful
experience.
I felt like a huge winner, despite not even having to go to the podium.
To have a member come over to me, introduce himself, and
inform me that he looks forward to each and every newsletter...
well, that is about the best compliment an editor can receive. I
really hope in the day and age of facebook, twitter, and all of the
other social media, that some people still enjoy reading something
other than a brief text or e-mail.
The other way I felt like a winner: The photograph below! I mean
really... how often do I get my picture taken surrounded by beautiful
women? (Not often enough, in case you didn’t know the answer.)
But seriously, most of the time I see any of you, we are all in shorts
or running gear, so it was a nice change to see everyone so well
dressed.
That’s about all I have for now. Keep on sending me photos, articles,
stories, jokes, input, output, shotput, etc.
Keep on running, and stay safe.
Until next time.... Richie Blake.
PRESIDENT’S COLUMN BY MICHELLE POUBLON
Dear Striders,
It was great to see so many of you on January 21st
at the Nashua Country Club for our annual Awards
Night. Whilt is is always nice to recognize as many
striders as we can, this year was even more special
with our first ever inductees into the Gate City
Striders Hall of Fame. What an honor it was to be
in the presence of so many “legends” of the club.
Even though we were only able to recognize a
couple dozen members who shined in competition
or were exceptionally helpful at many of the events
that require GCS volunteers, I thank all of you for
making this club what it is today. So, while you
may not have earned a competition award or
outstanding service award for your efforts, I want
to assure you that our contribution is appreciated!
Now the snow is starting to melt, and the days are
getting longer. It is time to think about which club
races you want to run in, and which ones you can
help out at. As always, everyone is as important as
anyone else. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have
such a great running club. So please don’t feel like
you have to be a record breaking runner to help
our club score points. Everyone who shows up to
help or run makes a positive difference.
Indoor track is in the closing stages, even though it
has been pushed back two weeks due to
cancellations from the weather. That can only
mean we are swiftly approaching our outdoor
season! I look forward to seeing everyone again,
when the weather is nice enough for shorts and tshirt.
Think Spring!
Bounce Back Award -Comeback of the Year
The Bounce Back Award goes to the male &
female Strider who have had to overcome
significant adversity in order to contribute to the
Team this year.
Tammy Gaffey
In the fall of 2009, Tammy developed a stress
fracture in her leg. After her stress fracture she
worked hard to come back and tried to attend as
many club races as she could. She ran 4 NEGP
races & 2 NHGP races. She scored 31 NEGP
points & 19 NHGP points (2nd most amongst
GCS Masters). She ran great times which included
some PRs. She ran a 1:12 at the Jones 10m, a 1:35
at the New Bedford Half Marathon, a 51:25 at
Bedford 12k, a 45:25 at Bridge of Flowers 10k, a
34:44 at Bill Luti 5m (1 st in her age group). Then
this September, when she was running so well and
was on deck for a great Baystate, she was sidelined
again - this time with a stress fracture in her foot.
In the face of a second setback in as many years
she stayed positive and worked through it to run
on the First Place GCS Women’s Masters Team at
Mill Cities. She is such a dedicated runner and
whenever she is down with an injury, she gets right
back up and gets stronger and stronger.
Dan Dugan
In September of 2009, Dan was a month away
from the Baystate Marathon and in the best shape
of his life. Then, one morning he awoke coughing
up blood while simultaneously experiencing
tenderness on the left side. He was diagnosed with
chest wall pain, otherwise known as Costicondritis.
A month later, he again experienced a dull pain in
his chest – this time on his right side. St. Joseph’s
Hospital quickly checked him in and within 15
minutes he had an x-ray, a cat scan and a very scary
diagnosis. He had suffered a pulmonary embolism.
The doctors learned that he had developed 2 blood
clots in his leg. These blood clots were dislodged
and ended up in his lung. His recovery was slow
and agonizing. He spent the next six months taking
Coumadin to thin his blood and getting screened
weekly to monitor his blood clotting factors.
Doctors told him his lung had been damaged and
that he might never get back to the fitness level he
had previously enjoyed. 2 months after his
pulmonary embolism he was allowed to start
running again. Seven months after, Dan ran the
Boston Marathon in a disappointing (for him) 4:42.
Four months after that he I competed in the
Timberman ½ Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile
bike, 13.1 run) where he finished in 5:35 minutes
beating his personal best by over 55 minutes. His
next big event was the Baystate Marathon where
he finished in 3:31 minutes beating his personal
best by 7:39.
one of clubs most active volunteers last year.
Tom Kolb
2008 was a tough year for Tom Kolb. He suffered
through a serious illness which put him on the
sidelines for most of the year. In 2009 Tom worked
his way back and in 2010 Tom was without a
doubt the face of GCS. He ran an astonishing 33
track races, road races, trail races, and cross
country races. He ran 2 NEGP races & 7 NHGP
Ken Snow
As with Karen, Ken could probably have won two
awards this year. Most Active and this one - Team
MVP. This year he ran 2 NHGP races and all 7
NEGP races earning “Iron Runner” status. He
scored a whopping 58 NEGP points which was
first amongst all Gate City Striders. He was Team
Captain on the First Place GCS Coed Seniors Team
at Mill Cities scoring 12 big points. He ran a 1:08
at Jones 10m, a 1:30 at New Bedford, a 3:21 at
Boston, a 19:52 at Rhody, a 56:33 at Stowe, a
42:44 at Bridge of Flowers 10k, a 58:39 at Bedford
12k, a 20:35 at Milford 5k (1 st in his age group), a
3:18 at Baystate, a 32:32 at the New England 8k
Cross Country Championships. And if that weren’t
enough, Ken is an avid snowshoer (with the
biggest shoes out there). Last year (and this year)
he did the Feel Good Farms 5m (a tough snowshoe
race in Lyndeborough) in 49:33 which was good
enough for 2 nd in his age group.
The New England Grand Prix represent the best
road racing the region has to offer. All the best
running clubs in the area have been well represented
in the series except for ours. This year is our
year to make a real series splash. With the depth
that this team has to offer and the fact that the
club has committed to pre-paying all race entry
fees for club members, there’s no reason why Gate
City shouldn’t be able to field scoring teams of 5
runners in each division. We’re gearing up to be
competitive in this year’s series. If you’re interested
April 10 – Red’s Shoe Barn 5m
Dover, NH (NHGP)
The Red’s Shoe Barn 5m has been a Seacoast
running tradition for the past 30 years, and an
early-season fixture on the New Hampshire Grand
Prix schedule. Many local runners feel that it is one
of the area’s “best run and most fun” races. The
certified course is a moderately challenging, rural
route that starts and finishes in downtown Dover.
The first mile is slightly uphill, miles 2-3 are mostly
flat, mile 4 presents a challenging hill & mile 5 is a
fast, gradually down hill finish. The current course
records are held by Dave Dunham (24:12), and
Lynn Jennings (26:05). The pre-race day registration
fee is $17 online at https://
registration.strands.com no later than April 5th.
The race day registration fee is $20, from 8:00 a.m.
to 9:30 p.m., at the Dover City Hall at 288 Central
Ave. Race festivities from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
will include short sleeve tech shirts for the 1st 200
registrations and special prices on all running
shoes. Prizes will be given to the top three finishers
in all individual categories. Door prizes, drawn by
random bib number, will also be awarded.
This year (for the first time since about 2001) Gate
City will not be the defending New Hampshire
Grand Prix champion. In 2010 we were edged out
by Greater Derry But, that’s alright. After ten years
of beating them, they were hungrier than us last
year and they really earned their victory. And, we’re
going to let them enjoy it. At least until March
27th at the Shamrock Shuffle - the first NHGP
race of the year! Hell hath no fury like a woman, or
a Gate City Racing Team, scorned! Am I right?
This year, there’s a great selection of races and
(unlike previous years) there are no direct conflicts
with the New England Grand Prix schedule. So,
there is no reason why we can’t show up at these
New Hampshire Grand Prix races with our full
compliment of runners. And, if that’s the case,
there’s no way we won’t be taking our NHGP tile
back!
2011 GCS ENTRY FEE POLICY BY: MICHAEL WADE
The E-Board recently voted to continue the
race entry reimbursement policy for 2011.
As it was last year, any current club member
can run any of the seven New England
Grand Prix races free of charge regardless of the
number Grand Prix races you’re able to run. And,
the race entry fees will be pre-paid by the club so
that there are no up-front costs for you. Just show
up and run! It couldn’t be easier!
Below is a list of the races that are eligible for
reimbursement for 2011:
- New Bedford Half Marathon, New Bedford
MA - Sun, Mar 20
- James Joyce 10k, Dedham MA - Sun, May 1
- Medical Center 6k, Nashua NH – Sun, May 8
- Rhody 5k, Lincoln RI - Sun, Jun 5
- Stowe 8m, Stowe VT - Sun, Jul 17
- Carver Cranberry 5m, Carver MA - Sat, Jul 30
- Cape Cod Marathon, Falmouth MA - Sun, Oct
30
So as you can see, our first NEGP race is right
around the corner on March 20th at the New
Bedford Half Marathon in New Bedford, MA. If
you want to run just shoot me an e-mail to
mwade@ganekarchitects.com with your information
(including your USATF#) and I’ll get you
signed up for the race. In the weeks leading up to
race day I’ll be adding everyone’s name to our race
list on the club website at www.gatecity.org so you
can see who’s running and how we’re set for teams.
Please understand that, by telling us that you want
to run, you are making a commitment to your team
to be there on race day. If for some reason, you
can’t run (after the club has already paid your entry
fee) then you’ll need to reimburse the club for that
entry fee before we can sign you up for another
race.
In addition to entry fee pre-payment policy, we’ll
also be continuing with our wildly successful
Intra-Club Scoring Competition. So, make sure
you get out and start racing with us from day one.
You don’t want to be left out in the cold!
This winter, I made a few New Years running
resolutions. You know, the usual: “Lose
Weight, Get Stronger & Get Faster”. I also
made another resolution: “Do more snowshoe
racing”. Fortunately, the decision to do the last
thing, made accomplishing the first three things so
much easier. Although, when I first started out, it
sure didn’t feel that way!
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, I hinted
“strongly” to my wife that I’d like to see a nice
shiny pair of Dion racing snowshoes under the tree
this year. So, imagine my excitement (and surprise)
to see exactly that on Christmas morn.
Unfortunately, the snowshoes didn’t come with the
pre-requisite snow allotment and I’d have to wait a
few weeks to try them out. It’s hard to believe,
given the kind of winter we’ve had, but in late-
December and early-January snowshoe race after
snowshoe race was either cancelled or postponed
due to lack of snow!
By the second week of January, Mother Nature
decided it was time to have a proper winter and
dumped a bunch of much-needed snow on us.
And, continued dumping snow on us for what
seemed like weeks on end. Finally, I had my
chance to head into the woods and try out my new
snowshoes. I was so excited for the opportunity to
see how these sleek and light shoes performed.
Barely two minutes in to my “run” I got a very
close look at my new gems as I was doubled over
them gasping for oxygen. This was going to be
harder than I thought!
NO SHOE-IN BY: MICHAEL WADE
Slowly, after much suffering and wheezing, I began
to learn how to pace myself while I churned
through the snow. My training times were not
impressive, and I ended each workout completely
exhausted, but I could see clear improvement from
week to week. At this point, I was also doing some
snowshoe races on the weekends. My goals for
these races were fairly low-key. Run the whole way,
get in a good cardio workout and have some fun in
the process!
The other benefit to doing these snowshoe races
was to see first-hand how the real snowshoe racers
do it. The first thing I noticed while watching these
Pro’s was how effortlessly they moved across the
snow. Quick light steps as opposed to my
lumbering, stumbling strides. The other thing I
noticed was that ALL of the other competitors
were smaller than me. In fact, I didn’t see anyone
even remotely close to my 6’-4” height and 190 lb.
frame. So, while they were moving quickly through
the deep snow, I was “post-holing” all over the
place. Hmmm.
Finally, after weeks training (and deep snow races),
my fitness improved and I was beginning to close
the gap on the faster snowshoe folks. Fortunately,
the snow conditions also improved (for me
anyway) and what was once deep, fluffy powder
had been thawed, compacted, and re-frozen to a
fast, weight-bearing, super-speedway. By mid-
February, I decided I was ready to mount a serious
challenge to their snowshoe supremacy!
Continued on page 23
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the
ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds
in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain
February - April 2011 Striding Along 22

Continued from page 22
At the Horse Hill 7k in Merrimack, NH (results)
I took advantage of the fast conditions and hung
with the speedy shoers right up until the last (of
three) climbs of the day. I was also able to hold off
2 racers on the final decent and out-sprint another
over the last 400 meters of the course. Even
though I was still the 6 th fastest master, I did
manage to finish in the top 12 overall. And, more
importantly, for the first time all year, I felt like I
was actually “in the race”!
The following week at the Beaver Brook 5k in
Hollis, NH (results) the quick conditions
remained in place and so did my race strategy -
“Hold on to the tail of the tiger for as long as you
can and then see if you can bite him in the end”.
Unfortunately, my over-exuberance came back to
bite me instead as I went out too fast, got caught
out of position on the first section of climbing
single-track and paid dearly for it for the remainder
of the race. Nothing like using the middle mile of
a 5k to recover from a too-fast first!
In the end, I managed to catch my breath over the
middle third of the race, hold off some hardcharging
shoers and finish respectably. As was the
case in the previous race, I was able to out-kick a
couple of veteran racers over the last quarter
mile and finished as the 4 th fastest master. I also
managed to crack the top 10 overall and finish
with a near 8 minute per mile pace – a far cry from
the 14 minute miles I was cranking out early in my
training!
So, now that we are on the cusp of March, I’ve
hung up the snowshoes for the season and have
turned all my focus towards the goal race for the
spring - The New Bedford Half Marathon.
During the 2-months of snowshoe training I
continued to maintain my long runs & tempo runs
and have seen a clear improvement in the quality
of each. I’ve also managed to shed 10 pounds of
extra weight which leaves me with just 6 pounds
more to go to reach my goal weight of 180.
Lose Weight? Check. Get Stronger? Check. Get
Faster? Only time will tell!
WARREN CHURCH
Warren joined the Gate City Striders in
the early 1980’s, shortly after the club
was established, and has served in just
about every capacity with the organization- as a
competitor, board member, volunteer, and team
captain. Warren was always competitive, but
equally dear to his heart has been the “fun” aspects
of the club—the parties, outings, church nights at
the National Club, after-race cookouts. His enthusiasm,
humor and laughter have always been a part
of the GCS culture—partiers with a running
problem and runners with a party problem. He is
second only to George Lecours in retelling old
jokes, and equally fond of laughing at his own.
Major Achievements and Accomplishments
include:
· 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner,
the first awarded by GCS
Despite moving back to his home town in Chaplin,
Connecticut after retirement from UMass Lowell,
Warren has managed to remain an active member
of the club, and even participates in such events as
Mill Cities and Novemberfest—never missing any
of those events, ever. Warren has traveled from
Connecticut on many occasions to reprise the Gate
“Hash Master”. His wife Peggy has always been a
big contributor as well, especially when Warren has
many times been host to large numbers of club
members.
Coming up on 30 years as a member next fall, his
impact on the club has been tremendous
He has been a competitor, author, event organizer,
coach, club officer, and race director. He was a
three-sport athlete in high school and college, and
determined many years ago that running was an
avenue to be athletically competitive for
decades. He competes in many types of events,
including road races, track meets, trail races, and
especially mountain running (GCS Veterans
National Champions).
Skip has 39 marathons to his credit, as well as over
85 mountain races, including 23 Mount
Washington Road Races (top 20 list all time). He is
fifth in all time appearances for the USATF
Mountain Circuit. He has been writing about
running for two decades in both print and
electronic media. He wrote a weekly running
column for The Telegraph (promoting the Gate
City Striders) from 1995 to 2003, and has been a
contributing editor for Cool Running.com since
1996, and has written for many publications.
Skip has been a cross country and track coach. He
has directed and timed many races outside of GCS,
and currently serves on the board of the Mill Cities
Relay. Skip also serves as a Board Member for
USATF-New England. After a long career in
international business, and several years as a
professor in graduate business studies, Skip joined
Cool Running.com on a full time basis in 2006 and
is now an employee of Active Network of San
Diego.
In the words of his good friend, Bob Thompson,
“No one has contributed more to the growth and
success of the Gate City Striders as much as
George LeCours.” He has been a constant source
of energy and enthusiasm, supporting new and
long-time members alike. He has also been
instrumental in keeping the network of contacts
for previous members, and his knowledge and
connections within the sport and the industry of
running are legendary, as is his sense of humor
(George holds many records for repeating the same
old jokes over and over, but somehow they remain
funny if only because of his enthusiasm in the
telling!)
George is a sub-3:00 marathoner and a winner of
many prizes as an individual and team member,
and is also a champion X-C skier. He has been a
constant positive influence, a significant
contributor to the club in so many ways for so
many years it is difficult to quantify.
JANE LEVESQUE
Jane was a charter member of the Gate City
Striders in 1979-1980 when the club first
formed- a small group meeting weekly at the
YMCA in Nashua, and sharing a run now and
then. Jane is the only member of this core group to
remain active in the club during the entire 31 years
of its history. Some others have left briefly and
rejoined, but Jane has been a stalwart member year
after year. As such she is ahead of almost all
members in total volunteer appearances. And she is
also right up there in total races run under the club
banner, despite losing a few seasons to injury. Jane
has likely scored more points in grand prix racing,
been a member of more winning teams, and won
more individual age group awards than any other
member. She has become a fixture at all events,
workouts, and club activities.
Some of Jane’s accomplishments and
contributions to the Gate City Striders:
· Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
· Several times member of the Executive
Board including Membership Coordinator
· Volunteer, Applefest Half Marathon (from
the beginning in 1983)
· Committee member and Volunteer, Nashua
Soup Kitchen Road Race
· Volunteer, Alec’s Shoes Road Race
· Volunteer, Fitness University Finals for
almost all years since its founding in 1990.
· Volunteer, Fitness University Clinics—
Watermelon, anyone?
· Volunteer, Medical Center 6K
· Volunteer, CIGNA Corporate Challenge
· Volunteer and Runner, Freeze Your Buns
5K Series
· Runner and Volunteer, Pack Monadnock
Challenge
· Represented Gate City in 20 Consecutive
Mill Cities Relays.
· Newsletter Mailings, nearly every
publication, since inception
Jane is one of the hardest working runners in the
sport, and she brings that same dedication and
determination to her volunteer assignments. She
has always been exceptionally positive and focused
on improvement. Very few GCS events, from races
to outings to hikes to clinics, have happened
without her presence. She has won literally
hundreds of age group awards and team
trophies—masters, seniors, and veterans. In only
her second marathon (Montreal in 1989) she
qualified for Boston as an open runner, although a
master at the time. She has run the vast majority
of the Tufts 10K races, and won age group awards
in marathons and Mount Washington. Her record is
as distinguished as it is lengthy, and she has been
an inspiration to hundreds of younger members
and an icon in the sport.
She worked with her husband, Dr. Adrian
Levesque, to develop computerized timing for
Gate City events in the early days before there
were programs available. They provided the first
computerized results for Applefest and other club
races.
She is the ideal volunteer, year in and year out;
always available, never complaining, providing a
wonderful role model for all. Though her children
are long since grown, she remains active in all
Fitness University activities.
STEVE MOLAND
Steve joined the Gate City Striders in 1997,
· Coordinated Equipment Storage and
Transportation (with Kevin Reynolds)
Steve has made extraordinary contributions to the
sport of running and road racing and has been
nominated as RRCA National Volunteer of the
Year three times. He has worked diligently for GCS
and GDTC, and has been instrumental in helping
New England 65+ organize their races and
communications. Steve has either served on or
been an advisor to the Gate City Executive Board
for 15 consecutive years, holding several offices
including President, and his contributions have
been enormously valuable to its success.
There is no job too big or too small for Steve
Moland. He has helped with Freeze Your Buns in
the middle of winter and the CIGNA 5K in the
heat of August, Amica Marathon in the driving
rain, Philadelphia Marathon in the frigid cold. He
has helped to store, maintain, and transport
equipment and distribute water and other supplies
to many races in the region. He has been willing to
take on any task from Director down to trash clean
up. Most of all, he his enthusiasm motivates others
to do their part.
Steve has won many age group awards in races
throughout New England and all over the
country. He recently won his age group in the
Timberman Sprint Triathlon. Steve has been an
integral part of the team at Cool Running.com for
several years, contributing business and technical
expertise for the betterment of the sport
overall. Steve has most recently started a new
business as a race announcer, adding tremendously
to the racing community.
ALLAN RUBE
Allan joined the Gate City Striders in the
early 1980’s, not long after the club was
established. He has represented the club as
a master runner and as a senior at a very high
level. He served as Striding Along Newsletter
Editor for more than a dozen years during a period
of enormous growth. He developed and monitored
the innovative “Club Forum” bulletin board in the
early days before e-mail, greatly enhancing club
communications and planning and he founded the
original GCS website. His communications and
technical skills helped the club communicate better
in all areas—social, competition, administration,
and marketing.
A few of Allan’s contributions to the Gate City
Striders include:
· Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, 2007
· Newsletter Editor, Striding Along
· Coordination of printing and mailing
· Founder, GCS Electronic Forum
· Founder, GCS Website
· Masters and Seniors Team Member—
frequent scoring member
· Developer, Henri Renaud Website (Nashua
Trust 10K, “Members Only” Applefest
Allan has provided long and distinguished service
to the Gate City Striders, both in club
communications and competition. He is an expert
on the Boston Marathon, both as a competitor (18
times) and as an historian. Well before the
introduction of e-mail and the internet for
communications, the newsletter and our telephone
hotline were the primary means of communication,
vital to the organization. After years of newsletter
editing, Allan led, and was certainly an innovator
and in the forefront of the change to digital
communications for GCS—well before most other
running clubs. He recognized the potential in
electronic and computer communications and
delved into it with enthusiasm.
It is difficult to measure the impact the newsletter
and communications had on the club’s success and
growth, but we know it was very significant and
helped the club to develop into the strong and
vibrant organization it is today. Allan and his wife
Sue have been mainstays in the masters and senior
teams, now veterans, competing in race after race
wearing the club colors. Both have won numerous
team awards and have a house full of age group
awards.
DAVE SARGENT
Dave joined the Gate City Striders at a
time when there were fewer than 50
members. He remained active in the
club for over 15 years in many capacities- as a
competitor, a race director, board member,
volunteer, and as club representative to the
RRCA and USATF.
A few of Dave’s contributions to the Gate City
Striders include:
· Served 2 terms on E-Board as Vice
President
· Represented GCS at 4 National RRCA
conventions
· Represented GCS at various USATF-NE
meetings
· Co-founder (with Alan Sears) of Fitness
University in 1989
· Director of Fitness University 1990-1993
· Race Director, Applefest (4 years) and Co-
Director (3 years)
· Developed the Freeze Your Buns Winter
Race Series
· Frequent contributor to Striding Along
· Volunteer, most GCS-hosted races and
events
· Organized several GCS marathon and relay
trips
· Assisted in establishing GCS BBS in the
early days of online communications
· Co-founder of Healthsource (now Cigna)
Corporate 5K
· Race Committee Member, Cigna 5K, seven
years
Although his membership lapsed some time ago
after moving to North Carolina, Dave continues to
keep tabs on the club and runs with old friends
when he is in the area. The impact of his
contributions continues to be felt with the
popularity of Fitness U, which began as a result of
a seminar at the RRCA convention in 1989. He
writes, “It’s great to see that Fitness University is
thriving; you guys have brought it to a new level!”
“I’d like to thank…the GCS board for my inclusion
in the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, I cannot make
it back to NH…but I am very honored to be
remembered in this way. I never really considered
my contributions to the club as accomplishments,
they fed the same addiction that is common to
many of the Striders past and present, a love of
running and being active.” -Dave
SHAUN SCANLON
Shaun is one of our long serving pioneers,
having joined the club in 1981. He and his
wife Betty opened their lakefront summer
home in Goffstown to the famous GCS Summer
Outing for the better part of two decades. Shaun
has been the rock of Fitness University, taking on
the role of Field Leader for over 15 Years of the
program.
Some of Shaun’s most significant contributions
are:
· Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award
· Fitness University Field Operations
Director, Committee Member, and Clinics
Manager 1991 to 2007
· Volunteer, Applefest Half Marathon
· Volunteer, Medical Center 6K, Pepsi
Challenge 10K, PAL 5 Miler, Nashua
Fourth of July Seven Miler (Holman),
Freeze Your Buns 5K Series
· Finish Line Timing Manager, Pack 10 Miler
· E-Board Member, various positions
· Veterans’ Team Coordinator
· Volunteer, Mill Cities Relay
· PAL Youth Coach
Always the first to volunteer for any event, usually
the first to arrive and the last to leave when
everything was cleaned up and put away, Shaun
has been a constant source of energy, enthusiasm
for nearly 30 years. The annual summer outings at
the Scanlon’s lake-side cottage in Goffstown were
a highlight of the year for members: swimming,
canoeing, running, hiking, biking (Tour de Bud),
and a fabulous cookout, on or around the Fourth
of July.
Shaun never wanted or sought the limelight, but
has been the perfect example of selflessness and
dedication to the club throughout his 30 years of
membership.
PHIL QUINN
February - April 2011 Striding Along 32

Continued from page 32
Phil was a founding member of the Gate City
Striders and it is no exaggeration to say
there would likely not be a Gate City
without his input; he placed his mark on the Club
early and without a doubt GCS would not be the
same without his input and guidance in the early
years. Moreover, running in the Merrimack Valley
was heavily impacted and influenced by his input
in race organization, club competition, race timing,
and the outright establishment or assistance with
many events. Phil was a Board member for five
years and president for two. He founded, or helped
to establish, three huge events: Applefest Half
Marathon, the Mill Cities Relay, and the Pepsi
Challenge 10K. Phil moved to Maryland in 1988,
but his influence has been lasting. ”The Phil Quinn
Award” presented every year at the Mill Cities
Relay is representative of enormous and lasting
contributions to the sport of running in the
Merrimack Valley.
Some of Phil’s highlights:
· Founder and second President, Gate City
Striders
· Founder and Director (with Dan Landry),
Applefest Half Marathon, founded 1983
· Founder, (with Dave Camire of Greater
Lowell and Marty Cardoza of MVS) of the
Mill Cities Relay in 1983
· Club Representative and Board Member,
Mill Cities Relay
· Lifetime Achievement Award Winner,
Montgomery County Running Club
(Maryland), 2001
· Founder and Race Director of the Pepsi
Challenge 10K
· Established Pepsi Challenge 10K as New
England TAC Championship
· Competition Coordinator, many years
· Executive Board Member—various
positions, 1980 - 1988
· Host- Outings, long runs, short runs, and
parties in Chaplin, Connecticut
· Helped to establish Striding Along
newsletter
· Operates Race Management Service (Race
Timing Company); is one of then foremost
experts in race timing and race management
in the USA
· Committee Member, Pikes Peak 10K and
Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, Washington, D.C.
· Chief Timer and Scorer, USATF National
Cross Country Championships, 2009
· Mirroring GCS, board member of MCRRC
for five years, President for two
· Has a hand in just about every major race
in the D.C./Baltimore area, except for
Marine Corp Marathon.
Phil is alive and well, living in Maryland
(sometimes runners think the Phil Quinn Award is
a ‘Memorial Award”, however Mr. Quinn is still
extremely active in the sport of running—in fact, it
is his passion and his profession.) GCS is fortunate
to have had his guidance and influence during the
formative years. Applefest and Mill Cities, as well
as the thriving club itself are testament to his
dedication, vision and expertise. While he is no
longer an active member of GCS, he remains very
active in Maryland and hugely influential in the
running industry in general.
CRUISE TO RUN EXPERIENCE BY: MARK SAGE VP
“Cruise To Run” is designed by a runner for runners; it’s the ultimate running vacation! The tour group is
out of Canada and the trip is organized by Jody and Jerry Friesen. It was our first cruise and I hadn’t
signed up with Cruise to Run grp but I had heard of them from a fellow running club member, I wish I
had! The unique nature of the run on each island, the “Runners Give Back” program, the camaraderie of
a small group of people (180 total), and the caliber of the guest speakers, make this an unforgettable trip
that leaves you yearning to go & try it. Not to mention, Princess Cruises does an outstanding job of
making each of their guests feel valued and special. The ports we called at were: San Juan - St. Thomas,
Tortola, Antigua, ST. Lucia, Barbados, San Juan
The Barbados 5K timed run with the local Barbados school children and adult athletes was open to non
Cruise to Run runners which I took advantage of & signed up for. It started on the beach – out and back,
flat and fast course. I finished in just over 24 minutes & came in third in my age grp. What touched me the
most was the school children that came to run in school uniforms and dress shoes. Many with no running
shoes… only dress shoes. Runners Give Back donated running shoes and the children could select a pair
for their own. Many wore the shoes in the 5K and when crossing the finish line quickly took them off and
packed them away in their book bag to preserve the shoe for future runs. I proudly remember Bart Yasso
calling my name as I touched the timing mat. Yet the children’s joy of receiving the donated shoes remains
the highlight of this race.
Also included in your experience are guest speakers which included Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer for
Runner’s World Magazine, Dick Beardsley, world renowned marathoner, and Lisa Bentley, 11-time
Ironman Champion made for an impressive line-up. I had the chance to catch up with Bart having first met
him at one our summer track meets in 2008.
If you would like to try a unique running experience then check out their web site for 2012 which has Sara
Reinertsen & Bart Yasso as guest speakers.
