c<strong>on</strong>sist <strong>of</strong> a Dilatator laryngis, a C<strong>on</strong>strictor laryngis, <strong>and</strong> a Laryngeus<br />

ventralis. The first-named takes orig<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> fourth br<strong>on</strong>chial bar <strong>and</strong> is<br />

<strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> lateral process <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cartilago laryngis; <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor<br />

laryngis c<strong>on</strong>sists <strong>of</strong> two half r<strong>in</strong>gs surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Cartilago laryngis just<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> attachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dilatator; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laryngeus ventralis takes<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> lateral process <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cartilago laryngis <strong>and</strong> passes downwards<br />

just <strong>in</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor <strong>and</strong> meets its fellow <strong>in</strong> a ventral<br />

median raph6. The existence <strong>of</strong> a Laryngeus dorsalis was doubtful.<br />

These structures are all present, as described by Gdppert, <strong>in</strong> earlier<br />

Ichthyophis larvae, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> a late Siph<strong>on</strong>ops larva. In both, however, <strong>the</strong><br />

existence <strong>of</strong> a Laryngeus dorsalis is certa<strong>in</strong> (figs. 25, 29, 30).<br />

In adult Siph<strong>on</strong>ops <strong>the</strong> Laryngei dorsalis <strong>and</strong> ventralis have disappeared,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor is more developed. In adult forms <strong>of</strong> Hypogeophis <strong>and</strong><br />

Caecilia <strong>the</strong> Dilatator, Laryngei, <strong>and</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor are all present.<br />

G6ppert also described, <strong>in</strong> a late Ichthyophis larva, a Hyo-pharyngeus<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternus, tak<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> fourth br<strong>on</strong>chial cartilage <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>nective tissue lateral to <strong>the</strong> pharynx <strong>and</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g round it to a median<br />

ap<strong>on</strong>eurosis between <strong>the</strong> pharynx <strong>and</strong> trachea <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> lateral side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

trachea.<br />

The muscle is present <strong>in</strong> younger Ichthyophis larvae <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> larval <strong>and</strong><br />

adult Siph<strong>on</strong>ops. In <strong>the</strong> 3-5 cm. larva <strong>of</strong> Ichthyophis <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>der part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

muscle is overlapped by <strong>the</strong> anterior edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor oesophagi, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siph<strong>on</strong>ops larva it is, though present, less developed-<strong>in</strong>completely<br />

separated from <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor oesophagi <strong>and</strong> with no median raphe (fig. 31).<br />

These phenomena suggest that <strong>the</strong> muscle is a separated porti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

anterior edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor oesophagi which has ga<strong>in</strong>ed attachments to<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth br<strong>on</strong>chial cartilage.<br />

Goppert described, as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>laryngeal</strong> <strong>muscles</strong> <strong>in</strong> a late Ichthyophis<br />

larva, fibres spr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> dorsal fascia <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to that cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> anterior part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventral trunk-<strong>muscles</strong>.<br />

It is not yet developed <strong>in</strong> 3-5 <strong>and</strong> 5 9 cm. Ichthyophis larvae. In a 7 cm.<br />

Siph<strong>on</strong>ops larvae it is a slightly marked muscle ly<strong>in</strong>g just lateral to <strong>and</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> fused third <strong>and</strong> fourth br<strong>on</strong>chial cartilages <strong>and</strong> tend<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Levator iv,<br />

with no dorsal or ventral attachment (fig. 31). In <strong>the</strong> adult Siph<strong>on</strong>ops it forms<br />

a well-marked muscle aris<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> dorsal fascia just beh<strong>in</strong>d Levator iv,<br />

<strong>and</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g downwards outside <strong>the</strong> fused third <strong>and</strong> fourth br<strong>on</strong>chial cartilages<br />

to a median raphe just beh<strong>in</strong>d Transversus ventralis iv. These phenomena<br />

suggest that <strong>the</strong> muscle <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> is possibly a derivative <strong>of</strong> Levator iv.<br />

There are, <strong>in</strong> Ichthyophis larvae <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> larval <strong>and</strong> adult Siph<strong>on</strong>ops, three<br />

<strong>muscles</strong> aris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> comm<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> dorsal fascia some distance beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

Levator iv-<strong>on</strong>e passes downwards <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>wards above <strong>the</strong> oesophagus, <strong>the</strong><br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d passes downwards laterally to <strong>the</strong> oesophagus <strong>and</strong> is <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

fascia <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> medial surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rectus <strong>and</strong> also to a median raphe which<br />

is c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> between <strong>the</strong> two Recti, whilst <strong>the</strong> third passes
