Urodela which no l<strong>on</strong>ger have a metamorphosis. Menopoma would be similar<br />

if <strong>development</strong> ceased at <strong>the</strong> stage <strong>of</strong> 24 mm.<br />

Gdppert (vide p. 132) held that <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> arytenoids, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> attachment<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laryngei to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong> Necturus <strong>and</strong> Proteus represents <strong>the</strong> primitive<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>. But <strong>the</strong> <strong>development</strong>al phenomena appear to negative such a view<br />

<strong>and</strong> to show that, as DrUner thought, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> is sec<strong>on</strong>dary to a more<br />

primitive <strong>on</strong>e, <strong>in</strong> which, as e.g. Trit<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> arytenoids are narrower <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Laryngei take orig<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Dilatator.<br />

In Siren (vide Druner) <strong>the</strong>re are, <strong>in</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dilatator, Laryngei,<br />

aris<strong>in</strong>g partly from <strong>the</strong> arytenoid <strong>and</strong> partly from <strong>the</strong> Dilatator, but no<br />

C<strong>on</strong>strictor. There are, however, outside <strong>the</strong> Laryngei, sph<strong>in</strong>cter fibres,<br />

which have no homologues <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Amphibia. The c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> needs embryological<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>-possibly <strong>the</strong> sph<strong>in</strong>cter fibres are proliferated or separate<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Laryngei.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> slightly different <strong>in</strong>nervati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dilatator laryngis <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>strictor laryngis <strong>and</strong> Laryngei Druner <strong>in</strong>ferred videe supra, p. 134) that<br />

<strong>the</strong>se <strong>muscles</strong> have been derived from different segments. This is not borne<br />

out by <strong>development</strong>al phenomena. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> Anura <strong>and</strong> Gymnophi<strong>on</strong>a all<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>laryngeal</strong> <strong>muscles</strong> are <strong>in</strong>nervated by <strong>the</strong> N. recurrens. The phenomena<br />

<strong>in</strong> Urodela are simply due to a slightly earlier giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> branch for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dilatator from <strong>the</strong> N. <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>o-accessorius, <strong>and</strong> have no morphological<br />

importance.<br />

Cartilago lateralis. Anura. Martens (1895) stated that <strong>in</strong> Rana temp.<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous cartilage lateralis which afterwards separates <strong>in</strong>to<br />

cartilage arytenoidea <strong>and</strong> C. laryngo-trachealis, but that <strong>the</strong>se elements are<br />

separate from <strong>the</strong> first, <strong>the</strong> arytenoid develop<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g metamorphosis, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> four elements which fuse to form <strong>the</strong> annulus shortly afterwards.<br />

I f<strong>in</strong>d that <strong>the</strong> arytenoid is present <strong>in</strong> a 12 mm. larva, <strong>in</strong> a precartilag<strong>in</strong>ous<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, quite dist<strong>in</strong>ct from <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g mesoblast. There is no trachea<br />

at this stage, <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> larval life <strong>the</strong> larynx immediately bifurcates<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> two br<strong>on</strong>chi (fig. 17). In a larva dur<strong>in</strong>g metamorphosis, at <strong>the</strong><br />

stage when <strong>the</strong> tail has shrunk to half its orig<strong>in</strong>al length, <strong>the</strong> trachea develops<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annulus appear. They are c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous with <strong>the</strong> dorsal<br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> obliquely placed arytenoid by precartilag<strong>in</strong>ous tissue (figs. 21 <strong>and</strong><br />

22).<br />

Gymnophi<strong>on</strong>a. In a 3-5 cm. larva <strong>of</strong> Ichthyophis <strong>the</strong> trachea is already<br />

formed. There is a precartilag<strong>in</strong>ous arytenoid, which anteriorly is circular <strong>in</strong><br />

shape, <strong>the</strong>n broadens (with attachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dilatator laryngis to its outer<br />

edge, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laryngei above <strong>and</strong> below) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n c<strong>on</strong>tracts. It is c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

posteriorly with a cellular sheath, thicker dorsally than ventrally, round <strong>the</strong><br />

trachea. In a 5-9 cm. larva <strong>the</strong> arytenoid has ch<strong>on</strong>drified <strong>and</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

with a cellular sheath round <strong>the</strong> trachea. In this sheath are <strong>in</strong>complete r<strong>in</strong>gshaped<br />

patches <strong>of</strong> cartilage.<br />

In a 7 cm. larva <strong>of</strong> Siph<strong>on</strong>ops <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s are similar to those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
