weaken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> quality <strong>and</strong> duration, with compensation or preservative coarticulation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al peripheral vowel quality <strong>in</strong> non peripheral stressed position.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>gs are examples from Rotuman <strong>and</strong> Nako (Blev<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Garrett 1998:527):<br />

3.3. Coarticulatory meta<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

Coarticulatory meta<strong>the</strong>sis is a type of meta<strong>the</strong>sis with articulatory orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Extreme<br />

coarticulation is possible <strong>in</strong> a sequence of stops, each of which <strong>in</strong>volves closures<br />

of a dist<strong>in</strong>ct articulator. When C 1 C 2 gestural overlap results <strong>in</strong> nearly simultaneous<br />

closure, with C 2 realized after C 1 , a C 2 C 1 cluster may be perceived. One of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

types is labial velar stop sequence. In Bisayan languages, Cebuano <strong>and</strong> Aklanon,(15)<br />

we see this k<strong>in</strong>d of meta<strong>the</strong>sis (Zorc 1964:97):<br />

In this type <strong>the</strong>re is coronal-non coronal stop sequences, examples from<br />

Cebuano Bisayan. Data is cited below (16) from Blust (1979:110).<br />

3.4. Auditory meta<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

Auditory stream decoupl<strong>in</strong>g leads to meta<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g sibilant + stop <strong>and</strong><br />

stop + sibilant meta<strong>the</strong>sis. Some Examples from West Saxon dialect of Old English<br />

are <strong>in</strong> (17) (Weyhe 1908; Campbell, 1959:177-78; Luick, 1921:913-14; Jordan,<br />
