Lifelong Learning has become an increasingly
important part of educational policy and
provision in modern society. Glasgow Caledonian
University is keen to support the developments in
this area and the university wishes to provide
flexible provision which will encourage students
to engage in Lifelong Learning.
Through the Scottish Credit & Qualifications
Framework (SCQF), the university aims to provide flexible
pathways into and through postgraduate programmes.
Through the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior
Informal Learning (RPL), we aim to provide opportunities
for students to gain credit for appropriate prior learning.
Details of arrangements for entry to specific programmes
should be discussed directly with the appropriate
admissions tutor.
The Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning (CRLL) has
been established in collaboration with the University of
Stirling with the support of a SHEFC Research &
Development grant. The centre has a vigorous
programme of research across a wide range of issues
within the field of Lifelong Learning. This includes the
changing nature of FE & HE; Social Inclusion & LLL; Work
Related & Experiential Learning; Credit & Qualification
Frameworks; ICT & Lifelong Learning.
The centre places considerable emphasis on
comparative perspectives on Lifelong Learning in its
work. In addition to its programme of research, the
centre also organises a series of forums and seminars on
Lifelong Learning which are attended by a wide range of
members of the research policy and practice communities

The CRLL wishes to encourage students to register
for research degrees on topics within the field of
Lifelong Learning. This can include MPhil and PhDs.
The university is particularly keen to encourage students
who wish to undertake postgraduate study in the field
of Lifelong Learning through its Learning Contract
Framework which includes qualifications up to Prof Dip
level. These opportunities will be of particular interest to
staff who are working in the field of Lifelong Learning
in further education colleges, universities, training
organisations, local enterprise companies and other
organisations involved in the field of Lifelong Learning
(see the Learning Contract Framework on page 23 for
further details).
