The creative producer in the film industry is a leader and entrepreneur. They are expected
to identify saleable projects, be effective and innovative problem solvers, determined
and persistent in developing their projects and deliver a hard-headed approach to financial
and legal affairs. However, in an industry where most producers are freelance, this can be
a challenge.
The MA in International Film Business is an innovative programme developed to provide students with
an opportunity to broaden and deepen their existing areas of production and/or business experience within
the context of the international film industry. It is driven by the view that those operating in the industry
must have the ability to cope with the business pressures facing them in a rapidly changing environment
with strategic knowledge of the creative process of bringing film projects to completion.
Producers must therefore be skilled in business development, finance and media law, but they also
have unique training needs which go beyond the kind of grounding a more general MBA might provide.
Consequently, this distinctive masters offers modules in script analysis and development as well as modules
which focus on the digital developments of the film industry, exploring the potentials of new production
techniques and delivery platforms.
This Master’s is therefore designed to provide both a creative and a business education for producers,
to enable them to pursue their film projects with creative flair but with a firm grasp of the business essentials
of their global industry.
The Division of Cultural Business is uniquely placed to deliver this postgraduate programme; the
academic team has a wide range of experience and industry experts will share their hands on knowledge
and practical skills.
This bespoke Master’s will contextualise business skills to the specialist needs of film industry,
recognising that in the film industry creativity and business savvy go hand in hand. The delivery method
of this degree is designed for people who may wish to combine further learning with their current career
commitments.
Entry requirements into this programme are a first degree in a film or media related subject or cognate
discipline with industry experience. It is expected that candidates will come to this course with a range of
