The Wise Woman’s Stone
A wise woman who was travelling in the mountains found a precious
stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveller who was
hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food.
The hungry traveller saw the precious stone and asked the woman
to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveller left,
rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough
to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back
to return the stone to the wise woman.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the
hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have
within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”
One of the greatest gifts that God has given each of us is the gift of compassion. May we
also have the wisdom to recognise this great gift and use it often.
TAS SPORTS
Our sport program has commenced and we have many teams playing on Saturday
morning. It was a busy start last Saturday morning. Our College nominated our teams
based on the student ‘sign-ons’ from the end of last year and the beginning of this year.
It is very important that our students follow through on their commitment because the
competition is now structured around those nominated teams. Our Head of Sport is
following up with students to ensure that our students fulfill their commitment to their
fellow students and that our College fulfills its commitment to the other Colleges.
eLEARNING INFORMATION
The roll out of iPads to our Year 9, 10 and 11 students occurred
last week with a series of parent and student meetings. Feedback
on the roll out has been very positive and our College is working
hard now to use the devices to improve student learning outcomes
through effective use of this technology. We encourage our parents
to become familiar with the device and the types of functionality that
we can now employ for our students. A big thank you to our student
and parents for the manner in which they have embraced this change
and we acknowledge the great work of our eLearning Coordinator Vanessa Noonan as
we have completed this roll out.
P&FA
The P&FA held their Annual General Meeting last Monday evening. We thank our
Executive Committee from 2012, Geoff Fowler, (President), Kerrie Muir, (Vice President),
Glenn Gray (Secretary) and Philip Sutton (Treasurer), who very ably filled those positions.
We doubly thank them now for they were willing to take on those positions again in 2013.
We thank these parents and all of the willing supporters of our College and look forward
to a wonderful 2013.
May God bless your week,
SENIOR SCHOOL
INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY
Week 1 has seen many of our students involve themselves in our Cultural
groups, Sporting program and Service Learning initiatives. We also encourage
all students to engage in the diversity of academic learning experiences
provided by our team of experienced and professional staff and to maintain
a dedicated focus on working collaboratively with their peers and staff to
maximise their learning outcomes throughout the year.
We look forward to our students continuing to work hard, looking after each other and dliving i out our College
values throughout 2013.
iPADs – A GREAT LEARNING TOOL
Year 10 and 11 students had the opportunity to begin working with their iPads
throughout the week. We thank our parents for their support in attending the
iPad information sessions. ‘iPad Bootcamp’ introduced our students to the iPad
as a tool for learning, plus the apps and workflows that will allow them to work
even more effectively in their academic learning.
STUDENT DIARIES
Senior School students have received their College Diaries from their Pastoral
Care Group teacher. Diaries need to be checked weekly and signed by a parent (as there may be
communication from teachers that needs following up).
Senior School Policies and Procedures are outlined in the Senior School Diary and all Senior School
students should make themselves acquainted with these.
In addition, please read through and sign the Acceptable Use Policy agreement on page 155.
MEDICAL FORMS
Medical Forms (now PINK) were distributed to all Senior students via their PCG teacher on Tuesday, 29
January. These forms are essential for current contact and medical details required for College Excursions
and contact should your child fall ill at school.
If you have not already completed this vital information, please do so and return to the Senior School Office
immediately. If you did not receive a Medical Form, please contact the Senior School Office on 3820 5520.
SENIOR SCHOOL ID CARDS
ID Photo day was yesterday (Tuesday, 5 February 2013). All students had ID
Photographs taken. Students in Year 10 and new students are automatically issued
with a new ID card. Students who have lost or damaged their ID card are required
to notify the Senior School Office of the need for a new card to be issued. There
will be a $10.00 charge for replacement cards.
VACCINATION PROGRAM
Vaccination Forms have been sent home to ALL Year 10 students for their combined Diphtheria/Tetanus/
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccination, and Human Papillomavirus (catch up program for boys).
All forms must be completed and returned immediately, regardless whether your child is receiving
the free vaccinations or not.
Students absent on the day of the clinic will be able to visit the ‘catch-up’ clinics (to be advised by Queensland
Health) to receive their vaccinations.
YEAR 10 PARENT/STUDENT INFORMATION EVENING
To assist our Year 10 students in making a successful transition to Senior School, a Parent/Student
Information Evening will be held on Wednesday, 13 February 7:00pm - 8:00pm in The Lighthouse (L
Block). This evening will provide an opportunity to meet the Senior School team who assist students

with their Pastoral, Academic and Alternative Pathways requirements.
It will provide valuable insights into career pathways, subject choices
and important changes to Work Experience for 2013. Attendance for
all students is compulsory, with any absentees noted via the Senior
School Office. Students are required to wear their Summer Formal
uniform on the evening. We look forward to sharing this evening with
our Year 10 families.
TRAINED BARISTAS - SENIOR SCHOOL CAFÉ
On 6 December 2012, students from Year 10 and 11 joined together in the first
week of their school holidays to attend an accredited Barista Training Course
at Sugar’n’Spice, Capalaba. Many students discovered, thanks to the excellent
resources at our disposal, that the art of coffee making is a skill that is acquired
through practice. We were given plenty of practice through the day and everyone
felt accomplished by the end of the day.
Thanks for the opportunity given to us by the Senior School and Sugar’n’Spice;
we now have a marketable skill. As a thank you to the College, the students have
undertaken to be fully involved in the running of the Senior School Café and will
be available to the College for functions. Our thanks to Mrs Weaver for assisting on the day, we really
appreciated the effort and time she gave us.
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND CAREERS
WORK EXPERIENCE – YEAR 10
Year 10 Work Experience is to change this year. All Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate
in a fi ve-day work experience program, but it is on a voluntary basis and is to be undertaken during end of
term breaks rather than at the end of the academic year. This is to allow students to investigate potential
occupations at a time when they are planning for future studies and selecting subject options for Year
11 and 12. More information will be available at the Senior School transition evening on Wednesday, 13
February.
VET DIARIES
For those students who are undertaking off-campus learning, VET Diary checking will commence the week
beginning Monday, 11 February. Diaries will be checked either Tuesday or Thursday lunchtime.
SCHOOL-BASED TRAINEESHIPS AND APPRENTICESHIPS
As vacancy notices are received for school-based traineeships and apprenticeships, the details will be
forwarded to Year 11 and 12 students for their consideration.
MIDDLE/SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS...
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The Middle/Senior School Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday, 7
February January at Cleveland Aquatic Centre. All students are required to
attend. The program for the day will cater for both competitive swimmers and
novelty House participation activities. Sports Uniform (House shirt) may be
worn to and from the pool. The College bus will depart from the upper car park at 8:20am sharp and will
return at approximately 3:15pm. Please remember that crepe paper, coloured hair spray and zinc cream
are not permitted. In addition: security of all items is difficult at the venue so we recommend no valuable
items be bought including iPods, mp3 players, mobile phones and other expensive items. Parents are most
welcome to attend. We look forward to a great day together.

Important: Please note that students are not permitted to drive to or from the pool on this day. All students
are required to travel on the College bus or in parental cars. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance
in assisting to make the day a safe and successful one for all.
REMINDER: AFTERNOON CARPARK ROUTINES
Thank you to those parents who have made arrangements to collect their child from a
designated spot in the carpark. We still have a number of cars jostling for position with
buses in the drive through prior to 3:30pm, which is causing some safety issues.
The drive through at the Beveridge Road carpark is only accessible to cars after 3:30pm.
Prior to this, it is a ‘Bus Only’ pick up zone. Thanks for your cooperation in keeping our
carpark safe.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Our first assembly for the year was held on Friday in ‘The Lighthouse’ (L Block). Some
assembly routines were established as well as the announcement of a number of outstanding
awards.
Each week, awards for ‘First Class’, Living the Values’ and ‘Centurion Rock’ will be presented.
Parents and friends are always welcome to join us for these weekly gatherings where we
acknowledge the great work and achievements of our wonderful students.
PARTNERSHIP MEETINGS – 5 AND 6 FEBRUARY, 3:30PM - 7:00PM
Thank you for your enthusiastic attendance at our Partnership Meetings last night and
also in anticipation for tonight. This is an important event where we encourage our
young people to work through strategies to identify goals and challenges for the year,
which in turn serve as a strong foundation for boosting greater personal responsibility for
learning. We hope that these meetings will assist in the further development of strong 3
way relationships among students, parents and teachers at the College.
TAS SPORT – BEWARE THE FALCON!
Well done to all of our keen and talented Middle School sportsmen and women who flew the Faith fl ag at
our fi rst round of TAS Sports for the year last Saturday. It was a great start to Trimester 1 sports and a
positive way to encourage a wider range of relationships amongst our students.
A highlight was seeing the interactions between our Year 8 girls’ Basketball team and their coaches, Jordan
Bellman and Adam Todd-Thomas, both Faith graduates from 2012. Jordan and Adam have returned to the
College in 2013 in coaching roles to continue to serve the Faith community. Well done, Jordan and Adam!
Good to see many teams kitted out in our TAS uniforms looking sharp on the courts also!
SWIMMING CARNIVAL – TOMORROW
We are looking forward to a great day of competition and fun tomorrow at our annual Inter-House Swimming
Carnival at the Cleveland Pool. All transport arrangements should have already been made, with those
requiring a bus from the College, having returned a transport slip. Students are reminded that they are
to be in FULL SPORTS UNIFORM, including House shirts, College sports shorts, College sports socks
College sports caps and sports shoes. Thongs and fun House accessories may be brought to the pool, but

not worn to or from the pool. Please ensure that your child has sunscreen, cold water and refreshments
for the day. A limited range of foods are available from the pool canteen. Zinc, crepe paper and any other
products that may ‘run’, are not allowed.
HOMEWORK ROOM – LOFT
The Homework Room will be operational from Week 4, due to the complications created by
the Swimming Carnival, Partnership Meetings and the Middle School Camp. Details of the
rostered afternoons will be shared later. The venue for Homework Room is the LOFT in L
Block. Middle School parents are required to sign their children out from this room, which
is accessible by the door marked LOFT, next to the lift on the northern end of L Block (near
the blue shade sail).
MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP AT TALLEBUDGERA
This weekend is a great time to work through the ‘What to Bring’ list to ensure that your
child has everything they need for the Tallebudgera Middle School Camp next week from
Wednesday, 13 February to Friday, 15 February 2013.
All camp paperwork should have been returned to the College by last Friday, in readiness.
Students need to arrive at the College prior to 8:20am to travel to Tallebudgera on Wednesday, 13 February
and will return before 3:15 pm on Friday, 15 February.
STUDENT STATIONERY AND RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS
This year we have introduced a new English text for all Year 7 – 10 students. Although
the book, Essential English Skills was included on the book lists at the end of last year,
it now appears that several students in each year level still do not own a copy of this
resource. All Year 7 – 10 students must have their own copy of this text, each and every
day. It is an inexpensive and valuable resource which all teachers will use in the course
of their English program throughout the year. If your child does not own a copy, please
attend to this situation urgently by contacting the Lucky Charm newsagency to purchase
a copy. Your prompt attention to this request will greatly contribute towards further academic success in the
coming year.
In addition to this, all Year 8 students should have a copy of Tomorrow When the War Began and all Year
9 students should have their copy of The Outsiders. Indeed, Year 9 students have been working from this
novel from Day One of this term. These books constitute a full term’s work for each year level and they do
require the hard copy of the novel rather than the electronic version for use in exam settings.
Best wishes for a happy and successful year ahead for your child.
SWIMMING LESSONS
Students in Years 1 - 6 will begin swimming lessons next week. Year levels will attend
lessons as a whole group at the YMCA pool (next door to the College) with qualified
swimming teachers. Class teachers will be in attendance and maintain supervision
of their class during lesson times. A timetable will be emailed out to all families this
week.
Please ensure your children come prepared with their swimming gear (named) on their allocated day. It is
important to note that all children are required to wear a swimming cap and sunscreen in order to participate
in their lesson. It is strongly advised that all children wear a sun shirt. Girls must wear a one piece swimsuit.
INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL: YEAR 4 - 6
On Monday our Year 4-6 students participated in our annual Inter-House Swimming Carnival. All students
are to be congratulated for their fantastic efforts
swimming, cheering and representing our College on
the day. It was a pleasure to see their sportsmanship
in action!
Congratulations to Coochie for their win on the day.
Due to our Year 6 students being away on camp this
Friday we will present the medals on assembly next
Friday, 15 February.
Thank you to Mr O’Carroll and all the staff and
parent volunteers involved in making the day run
smoothly for all. It is very difficult to bring such a
carnival together so early in the school year and we
appreciate your efforts!

STUDENT DIARIES
Students in Year 3 - 6 all have and will regularly use their Faith Student Diary. Please ensure you sight
the diary regularly and sign it, at least weekly. The diary is used to record homework and is a useful tool
for sending messages to and from school. Students also use their diary when borrowing resources from
our Information Services Centre. Developing these effective organisational habits in our students is an
important part of the transition to Middle School.
WORSHIP
Worship will be held on Thursday morning at 10:00am in the SPAH. Mr Keeler will lead our service this
week. Parents are most welcome to join us for Worship.
Every week we collect a voluntary offering from our students. We invite our students to bring along a coin
to contribute to this offering, the money collected supports our 4 sponsor children.
The Drive Through facility is running very smoothly so far this year. Please ensure
you continue to follow the guidelines for use of this facility so that we can do our
best to decrease traffic congestion before and after school each day.
DRIVE THROUGH
DRIVE THROUGH RULES:
• No one is to exit or enter a car unless it is stopped on the Colburn Ave side of the pedestrian crossing.
• All cars may only stop and wait for a maximum of 2 minutes before needing to exit the facility to avoid
it becoming blocked with traffic.
OSHC NEWS
We have had a slow and steady return to OSHC. It’s been lovely to hear and feel the children’s excitement
being back at Faith.
Our Vacation Care Program was busy and happy. It truly is a great time for children
to share with staff and other students in a totally different way.
There are opportunities to make great friendships with other children and to also
have the chance to develop new skills and have lots of fun and laughter. I try to have
Progams and bookings for Vacation Care available 3 weeks before each holiday
break, so please book in as early as is possible to be assured of your child’s placement.
Please remember for the safety of your child that OSHC should be notified of any absences. Please email
rherbert@faithlutheran.qld.edu or phone us on 3820 5236 with this information, especially for ASC.
Please ensure that we have all your current details i.e. phone, address, workplace phone etc...
JUNIOR SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORT
The Junior School students gathered at the Cleveland Aquatic Centre for the inaugural carnival of the
year. The fierce competition in the pool was matched by the thunderous cheering from the spectators. With
numerous close fi nishes to races, the tussle for lead became more intense as the updates were reported
to the crowd. While the teams worked hard to score the big points in the relay, their points were tallied from
the hugely popular novelty events that occurred throughout the day. With such a high level of participation
this year, the victory deserved to go to the most consistent performance.
REDLANDS LUTHERAN PARISH - FEBRUARY CAR BOOT MARKET
HELD AT ST JAMES CHURCH, WATERLOO STREET, CLEVELAND
The Car Boot Market on Saturday, 2 February was very successful.
Thank you to all of those wonderful volunteers who came to help on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We
were very excited about having first-timers join us on Saturday to learn the ropes. We still need more
volunteers so that there is always back-up, but more importantly, to keep the market operating smoothly
for our vendors and customers. When we keep everyone happy they return, and we are beginning to see
a large number of regular customers and vendors coming along each month.
One of the highlights for February was a Mango stall. They sold a ute load of beautiful mangoes from their
Toogoolawah property by about 10.30am. Sorry, mango season will be over by March!
Please come along to our March Car Boot Market as a volunteer, customer or vendor. If you would like to
contribute your talents and time for market day, please phone Joye Kriedemann on 3821 0291.
