PRESS RELEASE
Untergruppenbach/Partenen – 12th July 2012
Classic meets modern spirit –
Transmissions manufacturer Getrag takes part in the Silvretta Classic and E-Auto Rally in the
Montafon Valley for the first time
The system supplier for transmissions Getrag took part in the Silvretta Rally 5th - 8th July 2012 in the
Montafon Valley, Austria. The company was represented by two teams: the Getrag Classic team lined up
with an NSU RO80, while the GETRAG eDrive team competed in a Ford Fiesta incorporating the Boosted
Range Extender prototype. The event, the 15th competition organised by Motor Presse Stuttgart, had as its
theme "Classic meets Future", and involved races for classic cars and electric vehicles.
Getrag Boosted Range Extender at the Silvretta E-Auto Rally
The Getrag-designed Boosted Range Extender prototype proved its worth in the particular conditions
imposed by the rally. In a competitive field the Fiesta was well able to stand its ground, on demanding
mountain routes with steep gradients and stages of up to 117 kilometres. Stephan Hüpkes is Senior
Manager Advanced Engineering & IP at Getrag, and himself drove the Fiesta with its Boosted Range
Extender for the first leg. He sums up the experience: "Competing in the Alps in this kind of rally is one of the
hardest tests a prototype like this can be made to undergo. We are highly satisfied that our design was so
impressive under these conditions. It demonstrates that with its developments in this field Getrag is on the
right track."
The boosted range extender concept combines a modern, multi-fuel capable combustion engine and an
electric motor with a two-gear transmission that is shiftable under load. This allows for efficient operation at
every operating point and combines the advantages of conventional drives, hybrid drives and the purely
electric drives currently available. Thanks to very low CO 2 emissions of less than 36 g of CO 2 /km in the
NEDC, this concept also fulfils the tightened requirements of future legislation.
The Getrag Classic team pulls away in an NSU RO80 at the Silvretta Classic.
The NSU RO80 proved just as capable of withstanding the pressure. The car was built in 1976, its first
owner being the founder of Getrag Hermann Hagenmeyer and to this day it retains its original Wankel
engine. This classic vehicle was driven by Manfred Greiner, Chief Engineer Prototype & Testing at Getrag.
He was much impressed with the RO80's qualities: "Its long-distance capabilities and driving qualities,
construction and engineering are remarkable for a vehicle from the seventies." Bernd Eckl, Executive Vice
President Sales, Marketing and Business Development continues: "Getrag has been working at its
transmission technologies with the greatest precision for 77 years. That's why it was important for us to take
part in this year's Silvretta Rally. Its 'Classic meets Future' slogan could apply just as well to our company.
We retain the roots and the heart of the family company from previous decades, but combine this with the
modern characteristics of an innovative global enterprise."
The 2012 Silvretta Classic Rally covered a distance of 550 km in total. It included the Silvretta High Alpine
Road to an altitude of 2,037 m, as well as the Flexen Pass and the Arlberg Pass. Over three days
participants had to convincingly demonstrate the capabilities of their vehicles and their own driving skills
through 19 special stages and 15 time controls.
