Best wishes to the Leaders of 2010
A very special farewell to our Year 12 students for 2009. It is a real
time of joy for the students, but when speaking with them, there is
also a sense of sadness at the end of something special. Parting
with people who have been a major part of our community is
something that is sad but we also find it a very rewarding time as
we go through the farewell rituals, the worships, and also the tears
and fond goodbyes, and especially think about the development of
the students in their time at Faith.
Our prayer is that Faith has been able to indeed hold true to its
motto for these students;
“Faith in Christ... prepared for life.”
The Faith Lutheran College, Redlands Parents and Friends
Association provided the prize for our 2009 Dux Award winner
Aimee Pulman.
Congratulations go to Aimee for her outstanding achievements
this year. The P&FA will provide a $500 Bursary towards the
furthering of Aimee’s education.
MIDDLE SCHOOL JAZZ TRIO
The Faith Middle School Jazz Trio gave a special performance at
the Logan Rotary Club during Term 4.
Their outstanding concert was enjoyed by many local business
people, also in attendance was the Queensland Deputy Premier,
Paul Lucas. Our musicians were polished and highly acclaimed.
This trio has a fantastic Jazz sound and demonstrated remarkable
musical talent.
Congratulations to Sam
Hewerdine, Peter
Well done to you all!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
HOUSE CHESS COMPETITION – 2009
Over the last month of the academic year, each of the Middle School Houses
were involved in a battle royal, striving for supremacy in the regal game of
Chess. The standard of matches played was very high with the students
struggling to maintain such high standards over the course of the entire
competition. Each House was represented by two teams of four players, with
one player each required to come from Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 with each
team having at least one girl. Each House, over the course of the competition
played all of the other Houses. The composition of the teams was dynamic,
changing from round to round.
The House teams stayed fairly close to each other in scores throughout the
competition. Different teams displayed dominance at different times and the
final results saw each of the Houses finish a mere 8 points apart. The final
results were:
4 th Russell
3 rd Macleay
2 nd Coochiemudlo
1 st Peel
We now have a very attractive new trophy for the Middle School House Chess
Competition which should be on display in the ISC from the beginning of the
new school year.
Pastor Maurie’s
14 years at Faith
Pastor Maurie Richter has been a true inspiration as he guided the Redlands parish
and Faith community over the last 14 years. During this time the College’s growth and
development has been amazing.
We wish to pay tribute to Maurie for his particular input, drive and enthusiasm for our
College community. Whether sitting with the Prep kids or Kindergarten children singing
songs, ministering to families, leading worship or making major decisions at College
Council, Pastor Maurie has been there working, supporting, serving. With him has
been Annie and their family.
We thank God for Pastor Maurie and the work he has done in our community.
We will dearly miss you!
Outstanding success
Thanks to the fundraising
coordinated by the P & FA our
students have benefitted not only
with Data Projectors in classrooms,
the weather protection on the Art
Annex but with $50,000 worth of
sporting equipment.
A lot of work goes into Funfest and
Golf Day and it is wonderful to be
able to see how the students benefit
from this.
Thank you to the P & FA for leading
the way.
PREP GRADUATION
Congratulations to
Junior School Leaders for
2010
At Faith we provide opportunities for
our students to think with the Heart, the
Mind and the Hands, this is important
to our College ethos. Students are
encouraged and guided to take on
roles of additional responsibility and
development of the ‘whole’ child. This
consists of more than the Academic,
Sporting and Co-curricular Programs, it
is also through our leadership and
Jack Dennis, Rhiannon Farr, Logan Spiers, Paige Dillon
service opportunities offered to
students in our Pastoral Care Program. Caring for each child as a unique and
special individual is important to their growth.
Our Junior School students sponsor three children living in third world countries,
have a sister village in Pindui, PNG, and support a range of local community based
organisations. The Christian ethos of Faith values the roles of service to one
another and the development of responsible community members. Each class
provides opportunities for students to take on a variety of roles throughout the year
to develop their leadership skills. Opportunities also exist for students to assist with
leading lunch time activities and we have a Leadership Program that appoints each
student to a leadership role in Year 6. We encourage the role of these students
and allocate a staff member as a mentor to ensure a partnership and opportunity to
develop in their roles.
One of the Year 6 Leaders for this year, Kate Bell said, “Being a Leader this year
and getting involved with fundraising has shown me that we are so lucky to be able
to help others.”
Shared values, community respect and demonstrating care for one another are key
outcomes from the role placed on student leadership and service opportunities at
Faith.
Prep G, N, W students eagerly took part in their class Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation from Prep to Year 1 is a big
step which they were all ready to take.
Jodie Bartlett said “I am really
looking forward to Year 1. We will
get to use computers and learn to
read. Oh, even better, we get to
wear a dress.”
Sierriah Lee-Anderson added, “We
will get more friends, a new
teacher and read and write, that
will be fun.”
GRANDPARENTS GET INVOLVED
When Phil Hollingsworth came to watch his granddaughter play sport in 2008 he didn’t know that he was about to become their
coach.
Phil was happily watching his granddaughter play TAS Softball when he was asked to help out by watching 1st base. He had
so much fun he asked if he could help again. Phil was then asked how he would feel about Coaching the team and the rest is
history....
“I love working with the kids, seeing the development in confidence and communication that improves not only their game but
the kid. It is a buzz! I am hoping to be asked back to Coach next year.” said Phil
I think we can guarantee Phil will be asked back, this popular Coach brought his team
to victory in 2009. With the increase in interest and involvement from our students in
TAS Sport, we are supporting more teams and need more great Coaches like Phil. If
you have skill in this area please give Tim Keeler (JTAS) or Bruce Keys (TAS) a call at
the College.
Preparing Year 12 Students
for ‘Schoolies’
The first two of Faith’s talks to the Year 12 students by
Emergency Service representatives were conducted
recently by Faith parent and QAS Paramedic Trish
Casey and School Based Police Officer Nathan
Vaughan. These talks were a non judgemental
conversation with our Seniors about how to safely make
the most of their ‘Schoolies’ experiences. Both
professionals offered information, instead of reprimand
and rules, to empower the students to make their own
choices, knowing full well the consequences from a
health and safety perspective. The power of these
demonstrations and forums was the sincere care
exhibited by both Nathan and Trish, which meant that
their message was well received by the cohort. Between
the demonstrations of magazine articles and Police
techniques, students asked poignant questions which
showed appreciation for the conversation they had
opened up with these officers. We extend our sincere
thanks to Nathan and Trish for the gift of their time and
expertise in keeping our young people safe.
Seasons Greetings and Best Wishes.
Ruth Herbert and Staff at OSHC.
October 22 was a great day for Choir members in the Junior School. Students from the Performance Choir and Bayside
Boys participated in a CHORAL WORKSHOP led by Mr Paul Holley, Director of the award winning Birralee Blokes. Sharing
with us was a group of almost fifty students from Concordia Lutheran Primary School and Martin Luther Primary
School in Toowoomba.
Under Paul Holley’s direction the combined choirs worked on two songs, Windy Nights and Everybody Shout, which they
then performed for the whole Junior School at the end of the school day. The closing concert consisted of items from
each participating choir before the combined performance.
In 2006, Faith initiated an annual Choir Tour with Concordia. Every second year we visit Toowoomba and they visit us on
alternate years. This is a very valuable time for forging a strong bond between Lutheran Colleges as well as providing our
singers with high quality instruction by experts in Choral Music. Our choir members look forward to this time every year.
Congratulations to the Junior
School students and staff that
‘rocked’ the Junior School End
of Year Worship Evening.
Over 400 students and Staff of
the Junior School sang and
danced in unison to Merry
delight of the parents and
guests.
ALUMNI SUCCESS— ALICE DOOLEY
Operation Christmas Child
Radio Lollipop
Alice Dooley graduated from Faith in 2008 and was accepted at Deakin
University in Geelong, Melbourne to study Social Work. She has not left
Faith completely as she is still involved with Jam and Powerhouse as a
volunteer with Sarah Day when not at University. Alice has also been
working at Kingston College in Woodridge as a cadet Youth Worker. She
attends the school 3 days a week and deals with many different issues. “I
hope that my experience will be useful as my ambition is to work as a Youth
Social Worker in juvenile detention centres. I enjoyed my time at Faith and
attribute my interest in social work to their leadership programs. The school gave us many terrific
opportunities to build our resilience for life beyond school”, said Alice.
