Join Centra

Volunteers of all ages are welcome
to join us again in Central
Park on Saturday October 14 for the
GCA's Autumn Clean-up.
This time we have the inspiration
of an early photograph of the park.
Taken from Bank Street looking
west, this striking image will provide
the impetus for future works,
particularly in evoking the important
historic character-defining
features. I hope to see the centre
path through the park weeded and
widened. This will require some
toil and sweat but we know we can
count upon our community's well
known enthusiasm and support.
Considering other parks in the
Glebe, is there interest in the section
of Central Park east of Bank
Street or elsewhere? I would be
happy to get together with interested
individuals to discuss the issues.

Barbara Hicks deserves a round of
Outdoor gallery at Brown's In let

"It was a blessing." With those
words, Glebe artist Jaya Krishnan
summed up the October 1st outdoor
exhibition of his work at Brown's
Inlet Park on Craig Street.
Balmy 22 degree temperatures
and a clear blue sky turned the
park into an idyllic setting - the
perfect gallery in which to display
over 30 large impressionistic
acrylic renderings of the park and

The exhibit, entitled Brown's
Inlet Through My Window, , drew

on foot, by car, or pedalled in on
bicycles, people stayed to wander
through the exhibit, drawn in by
the rich tones and sensuous opulence
of the paintings, then were
charmed to stay and enjoy the glistening
water and fall colours. Many
Recycling Day Sat. Oct. 21
On Saturday, October 21, Mayor
Holzman in cooperation with
Councillors Jim Watson, Elisabeth
Arnold and Stéphane Emard-Chabot
will once again join Laidlaw Waste
Systems and the Ottawa Area Girl
Guides to set up a recycling depot,
one of four across the city.
Plastics, corrugated cardboard
and boxboard will be accepted at
our local depot at First Avenue
Public School, 73 First Avenue
from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.
You can bring rigid plastic bottles
and containers with recycling
numbers 2 to 7 plus all kinds of
cardboard. Corrugated cardboard,
cereal boxes, Kleenex boxes, shoe
boxes, detergent boxes, cigarette
boxes, paper towel rolls and cardboard
egg cartons are acceptable.

The response was so
positive, that the artist is planning
a winter showing of the works at
Fifth Avenue Court. He welcomes
pre-arranged visits to his home
studio at 25 Newton Street as well.

Councillor Jim Watson officially
opened the exhibit at 1:30 p.m.
THE GREAT GLEBE TREE HUNT
The Great Glebe Tree Hunt is
modeled on the great Kanata tree
hunt of years past. I am looking for
a group of volunteers to help
coordinate this project next spring.
The idea is simple: nominate trees
of significant size (height,
diameter), unique species, etc.
Other considerations will include
associative value, i.e. connections
with famous individuals, events,
and the like.
Following review by a panel of
judges, awards will be presented.
It is important to acknowledge important
trees in our midst, and by
doing so, perhaps assist in protecting
them for the future. This endeavour
may provide the impetus to
develop a comprehensive survey of
trees throughout the Glebe. I will
be in touch with the City to coordinate
this larger effort.

for the Environment Committee,
or if you have ideas for potential
projects or initiatives, call

Friendly Girl Guides will help
toss your recycled donations into
the Laidlaw trucks.
"I encourage residents to
participate in our Recycling Days,
and to buy with an eye for less
packaging," said Mayor Holzman.
Another Recycling Day is
scheduled to take place on April
20, 1996.
