Join Centra BY JOHN ZVONAR Volunteers of all ages are welcome to join us again in Central Park on Saturday October 14 for the GCA's Autumn Clean-up. This time we have the inspiration of an early photograph of the park. Taken from Bank Street looking west, this striking image will provide the impetus for future works, particularly in evoking the important historic character-defining features. I hope to see the centre path through the park weeded and widened. This will require some toil and sweat but we know we can count upon our community's well known enthusiasm and support. Considering other parks in the Glebe, is there interest in the section of Central Park east of Bank Street or elsewhere? I would be happy to get together with interested individuals to discuss the issues. Contact me via the GCA's telephone mailbox at 234-7911. With those words, Glebe artist Jaya Krishnan summed up the October 1st outdoor exhibition of his work at Brown's Inlet Park on Craig Street. Whether they arrived on foot, by car, or pedalled in on bicycles, people stayed to wander through the exhibit, drawn in by the rich tones and sensuous opulence of the paintings, then were charmed to stay and enjoy the glistening water and fall colours. Many Recycling Day Sat. Oct. 21 On Saturday, October 21, Mayor Holzman in cooperation with Councillors Jim Watson, Elisabeth Arnold and Stéphane Emard-Chabot will once again join Laidlaw Waste Systems and the Ottawa Area Girl Guides to set up a recycling depot, one of four across the city. Plastics, corrugated cardboard and boxboard will be accepted at our local depot at First Avenue Public School, 73 First Avenue from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. You can bring rigid plastic bottles and containers with recycling numbers 2 to 7 plus all kinds of cardboard. Corrugated cardboard, cereal boxes, Kleenex boxes, shoe boxes, detergent boxes, cigarette boxes, paper towel rolls and cardboard egg cartons are acceptable. took the time to tell Jaya Krishnan how much they enjoyed his recreations of their familiar surroundings. The response was so positive, that the artist is planning a winter showing of the works at Fifth Avenue Court. He welcomes pre-arranged visits to his home studio at 25 Newton Street as well. Refreshments were served and Councillor Jim Watson officially opened the exhibit at 1:30 p.m. THE GREAT GLEBE TREE HUNT The Great Glebe Tree Hunt is modeled on the great Kanata tree hunt of years past. I am looking for a group of volunteers to help coordinate this project next spring. The idea is simple: nominate trees of significant size (height, diameter), unique species, etc. Other considerations will include associative value, i.e. connections with famous individuals, events, and the like. Following review by a panel of judges, awards will be presented. It is important to acknowledge important trees in our midst, and by doing so, perhaps assist in protecting them for the future. This endeavour may provide the impetus to develop a comprehensive survey of trees throughout the Glebe. I will be in touch with the City to coordinate this larger effort. If you are interested in volunteering for the Environment Committee, or if you have ideas for potential projects or initiatives, call me at 234-7911. Friendly Girl Guides will help toss your recycled donations into the Laidlaw trucks. "I encourage residents to participate in our Recycling Days, and to buy with an eye for less packaging," said Mayor Holzman. Another Recycling Day is scheduled to take place on April 20, 1996. NEWS Playgroup to become Glebe Cooperative Nursery School BY BRENDA WHALEN It's September and that means another fun-filled year at the nursery school. There is a lot to celebrate this year. We are now undergoing a name change, and will soon become the Glebe Cooperative Nursery School. In addition to our name change we are pleased to welcome our new coordinator Lisa Fletcher. Lisa comes to us from Bells Corners Co-operative where she has had many years experience as a nursery school teacher. I am returning for my third year, and looking forward to it. Our nursery school offers a licensed preschool program for children aged 18 months to 5 years. Toddlers enjoy our Tuesday/ Thursday morning program which offers sensory activities, crafts and art, sandbox, blocks, dress up area, circle time and stories. In addition, our program offers time for gross motor activities such as playing with balls, bikes, cars, climber and slides. Preschoolers aged 2 1/2 - 3 years enjoy similar activities in our Mon/Wed/Fri morning group from 9:00 - 11:30 am. We also offer an afternoon program for children who will be entering Kindergarten the following year. The afternoon group enjoys a variety of field trips to the library, fire station, pumpkin patch etc. As well, special visitors come to the school. The afternoon program operates Monday to Thursday from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. The Glebe Cooperative Nursery School is located in the Glebe Community Centre at 690 Lyon Street South. Heather's Hippopotamus Concert comes to the Glebe Oct. 28 On Saturday, October 28, the irrepressible Heather Bishop will come to Ottawa for a special benefit concert at Glebe Parent's Daycare, 10 Fifth Avenue. Heather has a wonderful ability to draw everyone into the act, taking listeners on a rollicking guided tour through a land populated with helpful robots, operatic slugs, and kids who know what's what. This singer, songwriter and guitar player travels throughout Canada and the United States spreading her philosophy that "music lives in us all." Heather also has toured in Australia and in Scotland and Wales. She has been a regular guest on the TV program, Fred Penner's Place. Billings Estate Museum Heather's third children's recording, A Duck in New York City, received the prestigious Parents' Choice Gold Award. A reviewer called it "an outstanding production," containing songs of "sheer fantasy" that "convince us that there's beauty and value in every creature." The concert is at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 28 in the Basement Hall at Glebe Parents' Daycare, 10 Fifth Avenue, near Queen Elizabeth Driveway. Tickets are $6 and are available at Octopus Books, Puggwash Books, Ottawa Folklore Centre, Glebe Parents Daycare or at the door. For information, call Dave Hagerman at 233-9268. Historic finishes seminar The City of Ottawa's Billings Estate Museum will offer a House and Home seminar on Sunday, October 15, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This year's seminar focuses on the use of historic finishes and their applicability in your home today. In the morning, instructor David Bevan will take participants through a history of wall coverings and finishes, followed by a session on "vital questions" one must have answered before starting such a October 6, 1995 Globe Report-2 project. The afternoon features instructional demonstrations of stencilling, faux finishing and woodgraining, and will introduce sponging, spattering, dragging and blocking techniques. Cost is $20.
