St. Matthew's in 1995/96
BY DAVID FARR
St. Matthew's Anglican Church
has been a centre of worship, music
and community service in the Glebe
for ninety-seven years. The holyday
of the church's patron, St.
Matthew, falls on September 21 and
is marked by special services held
in the morning and evening of the
Sunday closest to that day. These
services traditionally begin a new
church year for St. Matthew's.
The church's central purpose is
to proclaim the relevance of the
kingdom of God. It does this
through its Sunday worship: a full
choral Eucharist at 10 a.m.; said
services at 8 a.m. and 12 noon and
choral evensong at 7 p.m. on the
first and third Sundays of the
month. In addition Holy Communion
is celebrated at 10 a.m. each
Thursday. Church school is held
every Sunday morning and, of
course, there is a range of activities
for other age-groups and interests.
The coming year will see two new
faces at St. Matthew's: the Rev.
The four part harmonies of traditional
English cathedral music will
echo through the neo-Gothic arches
of St. Matthew's Anglican Church
when the Choir of Gentlemen and
Boys are joined by their counterparts
from St. Matthias Church,
Westmount and St. Peter's,
Brockville in Choral Evensong on
Sunday, October 15.
Janet Smith, who brings a brisk and
friendly manner as assistant to the
Rev. Canon Lydon McKeown, and
Matthew Larkin, a lively and gifted
young organist and choir director
who has joined St. Matthew's from a
church in Victoria. He will lead
the two choirs men and boys',
women and girls' -- which have
contributed so much to St.
Matthew's tradition of fine music.
Over the coming months instrumental
accompaniments are promised to
some of the services and concerts.
Already the trumpet and the flute
have provided vivid colour to our
music.
St. Matthew's welcomes all Glebe
residents who are looking for a
spiritual home that is caring and
devoted to the beauty of the traditional
Anglican form of worship.
Further information on what the
church has to offer can be obtained
from the clergy or the secretary in
the office at 217 First Avenue
(telephone 234-4024).
Choirs from Montreal & Brockville
join St. Matthew's choir
in choral festival
The musical repertoire for the 7
p.m. service will include Let the
People Praise Thee, 0 God by
William Mathias, and Evening Canticles
in C by C.V. Stanford and
Preces and Responses by John
Reading.
