Celebrating the first week at Glashan

All schools have their advantages
and disadvantages. In the three
weeks that I have been at Glashan,
the discovery of the special things
that make this school unique has just
begun. Every day I go to school, new
positive aspects fuel my excitement.
So far, it looks like I have two years
of advantages ahead.
One of the major advantages is
that Glashan specializes only in
grades 7 and 8. Having such a narrow
age group, we are all more or
less at the same level of maturity and
face the same issues of growing up.
It comforts me to be around the kids

and help us deal with them by trying
to engage us in academics, arts, athletics
and many extra curricular
activities.
Another benefit of being at
Glashan is the multi-cultural diversity.
Glashan has children from many
different countries and places of the
world. There are children from
Romania, Sri Lanka, Vietnam,
China, and many other countries.
Having a friend from a different culture
has taught me many things. It
has taught me about food, the people,
the clothing and the culture.
Glashan has a renowned music
program. Ms. Bianchini, our music
teacher, has been running the music
program for many years. Children
can either rent or borrow a school
instrument of their choice. The students
who feel comfortable with
playing an instrument can join the
Glashan band.
I would like to add two examples
of how Glashan intends to create a

Coming to a new school can be
both exciting and challenging – like
on the first day of school, when
everything seemed unfamiliar as I
walked into the school yard. The
kids were different and the yard was
new to me. It was paved and had a
volleyball net. All the kids seemed to
be older yet I still couldn’t know if
they were in my grade or not.
Glashan is a one-of-a-kind school.
It has a big multicultural variety of
people. Meeting new people can
sometimes mean making new friends
or maybe new rivals and can be both
exciting and challenging.
Coming to a new school usually
means different transportation. This
time, I take the city bus, not the common
yellow school bus or my bike.
This makes me feel more independent
and responsible for my life. Another
thing that makes me feel more mature
and independent is having the privilege
and trust of going off school
property for my lunch break.

The first example is the barbeque,
which took place at the beginning of
the school year. There, the parents
got to know the teachers, the principal,
and most of all the school itself.
It was a great experience because
most of the parents didn’t know the
teachers or the school. They saw the
science labs, the D & T (design and
technology) shop, and all of the
other classes. Many children had the
joy of showing their recently organized
lockers.
The second example is the orientation
week to start the year off. Students
were given tips and workshops
on how to be organized, how to be
respectful to their peers and how to
build relationships with others in the
school. Each morning was dedicated
to a different theme while the afternoon
focused on academic subjects.
It was a great way to get introduced
to Glashan and to the school’s expectations
for the year.

Glashan School.
Being in a new school doesn’t
mean only fun and games. You
meet new teachers, which means
new teaching styles. Most are
being consistent about doing and
bringing your homework in on
time, as well as expecting you to
work independently. But on the
bright side, you don’t have one
teacher for all subjects; you have a
different teacher for most classes.
Another thing I found interesting
was that we have wood shop classes.
This allows us to express our
feelings in a positive and physical
way that I enjoy.
I enjoy coming to a new school,
meeting new people, learning new
subjects, and having more choices. If
you would like to know more about
Glashan and you are a student in
middle school, I suggest that you just
simply ask someone who goes to the
school!
