Dance a cachuca, fandango, bolero,
Xeres we'll drink, manzanilla, Montero;
Wine when it runs in abundance, enhances the
reckless delight of that wildest of dances!
To the pretty pitter, pitter, patter,
And the clitter, clitter, clitter, clatter
Clitter, clitter, clatter, Pitter, pitter, patter,
Clitter, clitter, clatter, Clitter, clitter, clatter,
pitter, pitter, pitter, patter, patter, patter, patter,
we'll dance,
INTERVAL
The themes of Franck's only symphony present
strong outlines, vivid orchestral colour and
exultant climaxes. It has a highly individual
construction one of the features being that the
finale quotes from the other movements. The
finale has a sweeping onward drive with a marchlike,
syncopated main theme. Later the cor anglais theme from the second movement
re-appears and there is also a recapitulation of the "motive of faith" and the opening
theme from the first movement. Nevertheless it is the march-like theme from the
movement's opening which returns in triumph at the end.
Tannhäuser has sinned, having dallied with the Venus in Venusberg, and goes with a
group of Pilgrims to Rome to beg pardon from the Pope. His love, Elisabeth, awaits his
return with his friend Wolfram. This chorus is sung as the Pilgrims return from Rome,
and opens in a beautifully atmospheric , gradually reaching its climactic ,
before dying away into the distance.
Beglückt darf nun dich, o Heimat, ich
schauen
und grüssen froh deine lieblichen Auen;
nun lass' ich ruh'n den Wanderstab,
weil Gott getreu ich gepilgert hab'.
With joy, my home, I now behold thee,
and gladly greet thy smiling meadows;
now I lay down my pilgrim's staff,
for, submissive to God, I have made my
pilgrimage.
