Prince Igor, which was incomplete on Borodin‘s death and was completed by Rimsky Korsakov and Glazunov, is rarely performed outside Russia. The action of the opera relates to an incident in 1185 during a conflict between Russia and the Tartars. Prince Igor is defeated and captured by Khan Konchak of the Polovtsi but eventually manages to escape. The Polovtsian dances were completed by Borodin before his death. They are much better known than the opera itself and are frequently performed in the choral version we sing tonight. In the opera the dances are performed by the slave dancers of the Khan to entertain the captive Prince Igor.
