State Fair Needs Senior Members
Okay, senior level 4-H members, the State Fair needs your help with
Horse Fair, Livestock Show and the Exhibit Building. The Exhibit
Building needs the most help August 22-25 for receiving, judging and
display of exhibits. The position created for youth to help with State
Fair is called Teen Staff. Teen Staff stay at the fair in “dorms”. This is
a great opportunity for state leadership and a lot of fun. The days you
work are flexible – we work with your school and activity schedule. It
really is fun and you get paid! Questions? Call Lynette.
June 1st can still participate in regular club activities but will not be
IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT FAIR
Mandatory All
Leaders
Meeting
Scheduled
All Leaders must attend the meeting regarding the 2011 Wasco County Fair on
Monday, July 11th, scheduled for 6:30 pm in the 3rd floor Lecture Hall in Building 2 of
the Columbia Gorge Community College. All leaders, superintendents and junior
superintendents need to attend. This meeting will inform you of changes occurring for
the 2011 Wasco County 4-H Fair and auction.
Possession
Dates for Fair
Possession Dates to Remember: All 4-H members must own or lease their animal by
June 1st or prior to the spring weigh-in dates (whichever comes first) in order to
participate in County Fair. The only exception to this rule is for the pen of fryers where
the bird or rabbit cannot be older than 6 weeks of age. Members leasing an animal
must have a copy of the lease to the Extension Office by June 1st.
Reminder: An exhibitor may enter (and bring to fair) only two entries of each
species in a market class. This includes overweight and underweight animals.
Reminder: Breeding classes are for exhibitors who are raising breeding animals and
enrolled in a breeding project area. Overweight, underweight or “extra” animals raised
for auction are not to be entered in breeding project classes.
Junior Supers
Still Needed
We need a few 4-H members… Intermediate and Senior 4-H members, have you considered
applying to become a Junior Superintendent?
This program is designed to provide leadership and community service opportunities
for older 4-H members through assisting adult superintendents in managing county fair
activities. Your possible duties include: hosting in the 4-H Building and/or barns,
clerking, helping run contests, distributing ribbons, staffing the 4-H office, distributing
admission bracelets, staffing 4-H promotion activities, setting up and taking down
facilities for fair, checking in exhibits and running errands. We are hoping that all
superintendents will be able to have the help of one or two Junior Superintendents.
Information on this program is available on the web-site or by calling Lynette.
Applications are due June 13th. You must re-apply even if you were a Junior
Superintendent last year.
The selection process will include review of the application and letter of
recommendation and an interview of finalists by the superintendent and agent. Youth
will be notified of their selection by June 27th. Chosen youth will be expected to attend
a Junior Superintendent training on July 6th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and the mandatory
Leaders’ meeting beginning at 6:30 pm and the mandatory Superintendent training
scheduled for July 26th.
Parents:
Keep Your
Children Safe
Help us keep your children safe by providing appropriate supervision at 4-H activities,
including events occurring at the Auction Yard and fairgrounds. It is the parents’
responsibility to provide supervision for their children.
Do NOT assume that the club leader, other volunteers, or the 4-H staff are watching
your children. These folks are managing the activities; not the participants. If you
cannot be present with your children at 4-H activities, be sure to make arrangements
with another adult you trust to do so.
Remember that 4-H activities are often open to the general public; so there is no way
to ensure a risk free environment. Also remember, many of the venues in which 4-H
activities occur are privately owned and we must respect their property and business
and their risk management by not letting the children (4-H members, siblings and
friends) run free without supervision. Keep your children safe – know the risks and
watch your children.
Camping
Reservations
at Fair
Everyone is required to make a reservation to camp at the fairgrounds during fair. To
make a reservation, send an e-mail to wcfgcamping@gmail.com. The e-mail must
include: your name and contact information (address, phone), tent or RV, length of
RV, number of slide outs and location on RV (which side) and if hook ups are wanted.
Superintendents can make their reservations between June 19 and 25 th and 4-H/FFA
parents can reserve their space between June 26-July 2. On July 3 the remaining
spaces will be opened up to the general public.
Market
Animal
Weigh-in
If you intend to show a market lamb, hog or goat at the 2011 Wasco County Fair, your
animal must be weighed and tagged at one of the county weigh-ins.
Official weigh-ins will be on Friday, June 3rd from 3:00–6:00 pm at the auction yard
and Saturday, June 4th from 8:00–11:00 am at the fairgrounds. Due to flooding issues
at the fairgrounds we would like to encourage you to weigh in at the auction yard if at
all possible. The fewer trucks and trailers driving on the soft, water soaked roads the
better. Also, please do not pull off the road onto the grassy area.
Due to safety and liability concerns, all children under the age of 9 and dogs
MUST remain in the vehicles during the weigh-in at the auction yard
Opportunity Employer.
Basic Animal
Health Care
Important
All animals need to receive some basic health care. Some of the tasks that need to be
done for all animals include:
Monitor and control parasites – worms, lice, mites, coccidia, flies, grubs...
Check hooves or toenails. Do they need to be trimmed or treated?
Check for body condition. Is the animal too fat or thin? Review nutrition and feeding.
Are you meeting the animal’s nutritional needs for its stage of life and production?
Vaccinations and annual boosters. Talk to your veterinarian and determine what
diseases to vaccinate for. Some projects require specific vaccinations of your
animals so that you may participate in group events, such as the dog project.
Contact the Extension Service to get a copy of the specific rules.
In addition there is concern about specific diseases with certain projects, including:
Horses-West Nile Virus; Swine-Erysipelas; Beef and Dairy Heifers – Brucellosis
Make certain that all project animals are properly castrated, dehorned, and tails
docked, if required.
Ear tag your sheep and goats with Scrapie Tags.
The publication, “Keeping Your 4-H Market Animals Healthy,” (4-H140)
contains more detailed information about livestock health concerns. Ask for a copy at
the Extension Office or view it on line at:
Horse News
Equine Herpes Virus Information
The recent outbreak of EHV-1 (equine herpes virus -1) has generated concern among horse
owners and a lot of misinformation. Always remember to verify the source of information. For
animal issues, the State Veterinarian is a good source of accurate, understandable information
(http://www.oregon.gov/ODA/AHID/index.shtml) as is the state’s college of veterinary medicine
(http://oregonstate.edu/vetmed/).
At the time of this article, three Oregon horses tested positive but did not show clinical signs of
the neurological herpes virus (equine herpes virus myeloencephalopathy) or EHM. Confirmed
cases are located in Clackamas, Umatilla, and Deschutes counties. One of the suspect horses
in Clackamas County has been diagnosed with the neurological herpes virus. These horses
are directly linked to the cutting horse event held in Utah. Currently, there is no equine vaccine
that has a label claim for protection against EHM and no specific treatment that has been
proven effective for EHM;
This outbreak highlights the importance of implementing biosecurity measures and basic
hygiene practices in our everyday routine. These measures should be followed every time we
take a horse away from its home. Basic precautions include the following:
Wash your hands before handling each horse.
Do not rotate horses from stall to stall.
Do not share feed or water buckets.
When filling water buckets, do not submerge the hose.
If equipment must be shared, disinfect between uses.
Change clothes frequently.
Properly dispose of manure.
The BUZZ about After School…
By Holly Morris
Summer is almost upon us! The Wasco County 4-H and The Dalles Middle School Technology
Club meetings will be combined for the summer. We will be meeting twice a month at the CGCC in
the OSU Extension conference room though out the summer months, days and times TBA. The
members of each of these clubs have been preparing for the Wasco County Fair that is quickly
approaching. They will have their computer games, robotics and Lego displays on exhibit in the
4-H building. Be on the watch!
The 4-H TDMS Tech and Cloverbud Jr. Tech Club members presented their robots at Google last
month. A member from the Cloverbud Jr. Tech Club presented the Lego WeDo’s and 2 members
from TDMS Tech presented the NXT robots. This was very exciting to show how the members
have grown, the new skills they have learned and their experience at the First Lego League last
December in Hood River.
