• Review playing a low tone and a high tone on drum<br />

• Play a dotted rhythm on drum<br />

• Sing and play (on xylophones) syncopated rhythms<br />

• Learn to hold and play guiro in a down up-up pattern<br />

• Focus on call and response form<br />

• Provide the options of singing a verse as a solo<br />

and harmony<br />

• Learn about Carnival and calypso style in the Caribbean<br />

` Review low and high tones on the drum.<br />

` Start by playing the Easy Drum part – low tones on the beat. This skeleton part can be played by any student while others play<br />

the full part.<br />

` Add the other hand on a high tone to complete the Full Drum part.<br />

* Scrape guiro downwards (away from the body) in a slow half-note rhythm;<br />

then scrape upwards (toward the body) twice in staccato quarter notes.<br />

** The low tone (below the line) is played in the middle of the drumhead;<br />

the high tone (above the line) is played on the edge of the drumhead.<br />

Use a different hand for each tone.<br />

` Demonstrate how to hold the guiro and scraper (see drawing).<br />

` Start by playing the Easy Guiro part. Make the down (away) stroke a long sound and the up<br />

(toward you) stroke staccato. This skeleton part can be played by any student while others play<br />

the full part.<br />
