The 1983 Ninth DislrIct Progress<br />
Mee ting was held in the Emerald<br />
Ci ty, Seattle, Washington, on September<br />
7, 8, and 9.<br />
The opening <strong>of</strong> the meeting was<br />
compctently handled by Temporary<br />
Ch:mman Charl es Silvernale, Business<br />
Manager <strong>of</strong> l ocal 77. Charlie<br />
went over the many roadblocks being<br />
faced by <strong>IBEW</strong> members in the<br />
Northwest and elsewhere. He warned<br />
our members that unless they vote<br />
for the ca ndidates friendly to unions,<br />
the past three years will seem like .1<br />
picnic. Charlie's opemng remarks<br />
were well received by the de lega tes.<br />
The pledge <strong>of</strong> allegiance was led<br />
by President Harry Meyers <strong>of</strong> l ocal<br />
46 and Jam es Valentine, president <strong>of</strong><br />
Local 77. Vi ce President McCann<br />
was introduced and requested that<br />
all those in attendance stand for a<br />
moment <strong>of</strong> silence in honoring President<br />
Emeritus Cordon M. Freeman<br />
who passed away on May 13, 1983.<br />
Vice President McCann expressed<br />
to the delega tes IllS thanks and those<br />
<strong>of</strong> hiS staff for their help and support<br />
which played a large part in th e<br />
success <strong>of</strong> the 1981 Convention. He<br />
we nt ove r th e problems th at have<br />
been fa ced over the la st year; some<br />
resolved, so me not. To Improve the<br />
drasti C economic picture, Vice President<br />
McCann told the delegates that<br />
"we mUSt support COPE and our<br />
polttical fnends. lBEW members must<br />
support any effort whIch will OUSt<br />
