IBEW Founders' Scholarships Increased
This year, as pan of thcongomggrowth
and progrcss of the IDEW Founders'
Scholarship Program, the wonh of each
award has been increased to SJ,OOO per
year. Thus, each schol:u shlp IS worth
512,000 for up to four years of undergraduate
study leadtng 10 a bachelor's
degree from any accredited college 0 1
umvcrslly. Winners draw on thell award
for all Icgmn13tC cduc:H1onal expenses,
such as tUUlon, books, Instruments, laboratory
fees, student :lct!vlly fees, and
li brary fees, and for then family 's sub·
Slstence.
The scholarshIps arc named In honor
of the IBEW founders, thai small group
of skilled and dedI cated wiremen :Itld
linemen who, In November, 1891, organ
ized the InternationAl Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers. The Founders' Scholarship
I'rogram was lIlaugurated In 1966,
In celebration of the Brotherhood's 75th
Diamond Anniversary. Thril yea r, eight
lBEW members were chosen as the fi rst
honored reCipients of IBEW Founders'
Scholarships. Since the founding of the
program, 110 scholarships have been
awarded through 1983. Currently, 12
award winners arc attending college
Winners have come from across the
Umted States, Cmada, and the Republic
of Panama. They have come from the
various branches of the Brotherhood, and
they have come from the ranks of the
very young to mature men and women
with years of work experience who have
been out of school for 10 years or longer

les. Some award wmners have gone on
to graduate school at their own cxpense

Objectives

and devoted !BEW members to achieve
personal development and to advance to
profeSSIOnal levels, thereby being able to
assist tn the advancement and further
development of the electncal IIldustry
and of organrzed labor.

The !BEW Founders' ScholarshIps are
the only scholarships sponsored by the
Int ernatlo n:al Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers. They arc open only to IHEW
mem bers. They arc not available for chll·
dren of mEW members, unless those
children arc eligible IBEW members. They
may be used III the followtng or related
