<strong>IBEW</strong> Founders' Scholarships Increased<br />
This year, as pan <strong>of</strong> thcongomggrowth<br />
and progrcss <strong>of</strong> the IDEW Founders'<br />
Scholarship Program, the wonh <strong>of</strong> each<br />
award has been increased to SJ,OOO per<br />
year. Thus, each schol:u shlp IS worth<br />
512,000 for up to four years <strong>of</strong> undergraduate<br />
study leadtng 10 a bachelor's<br />
degree from any accredited college 0 1<br />
umvcrslly. Winners draw on thell award<br />
for all Icgmn13tC cduc:H1onal expenses,<br />
such as tUUlon, books, Instruments, laboratory<br />
fees, student :lct!vlly fees, and<br />
li brary fees, and for then family 's sub·<br />
Slstence.<br />
The scholarshIps arc named In honor<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>IBEW</strong> founders, thai small group<br />
<strong>of</strong> skilled and dedI cated wiremen :Itld<br />
linemen who, In November, 1891, organ<br />
ized the InternationAl <strong>Brotherhood</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Electrical Workers. The Founders' Scholarship<br />
I'rogram was lIlaugurated In 1966,<br />
In celebration <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Brotherhood</strong>'s 75th<br />
Diamond Anniversary. Thril yea r, eight<br />
lBEW members were chosen as the fi rst<br />
honored reCipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>IBEW</strong> Founders'<br />
Scholarships. Since the founding <strong>of</strong> the<br />
program, 110 scholarships have been<br />
awarded through 1983. Currently, 12<br />
award winners arc attending college<br />
Winners have come from across the<br />
Umted States, Cmada, and the Republic<br />
<strong>of</strong> Panama. They have come from the<br />
various branches <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Brotherhood</strong>, and<br />
they have come from the ranks <strong>of</strong> the<br />
very young to mature men and women<br />
with years <strong>of</strong> work experience who have<br />
been out <strong>of</strong> school for 10 years or longer<br />

and devoted !BEW members to achieve<br />
personal development and to advance to<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>eSSIOnal levels, thereby being able to<br />
assist tn the advancement and further<br />
development <strong>of</strong> the electncal IIldustry<br />
and <strong>of</strong> organrzed labor.<br />

The !BEW Founders' ScholarshIps are<br />
the only scholarships sponsored by the<br />
Int ernatlo n:al <strong>Brotherhood</strong> <strong>of</strong> Electrical<br />
Workers. They arc open only to IHEW<br />
mem bers. They arc not available for chll·<br />
dren <strong>of</strong> mEW members, unless those<br />
children arc eligible <strong>IBEW</strong> members. They<br />
may be used III the followtng or related<br />

architecture, huslness, bUSiness admlll'<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> schola rships awarded<br />

or malor fraction there<strong>of</strong>, to a<br />
