Why ‘Vandals’?
Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. Idaho’s student-athletes earned the
nickname nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Idaho legend Hec Edmundson, whose
teams played with such ferocity that area sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents.
In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the Argonaut, the student newspaper, wrote in a pregame
story, “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the
present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.”
By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in
their push to have the name officially adopted as the nickname for all Idaho teams.
2008 Season Outlook
The Idaho women improved by five
games from the 2006 season into
2007. In 2008, the Vandals will look
to take the next step in the team’s
development and get even better in
Head Coach Peter Showler’s fourth
season at the helm.
Since the 2007 squad had just
a pair of seniors, nearly the entire
Idaho squad will return to the pitch in
2008. All but one of last year’s starters
will be back, while 18 of its 24 letterwinners
will also return. Idaho also
adds six talented newcomers whom
Showler hopes will add an extra boost
to the solid group of veterans.
Particularly exciting for Showler is the fact that his team returns every
player who either scored a goal, assisted a goal or tallied a save
last season. The team’s top two goal-scorers, Jennifer Hull and Anna
Edmonds, are both just sophomores, while the team’s two assist
leaders, Britta Rustad and Hayley Henry, are both seniors.
Experience figures to be a factor for the 2008 Vandals, which enter
the season with a combined 302 starts to their credit, for an average
of 16.8 starts per returner. Compare that to 174 combined starts and
a 10.9 average from the 2007 squad.
After his freshman class jumped right in and contributed immediately
last season, Showler hopes the 2008 group can duplicate those
results this season.
The most important thing for the team to do this coming season,
according to Showler is to maintain
its consistency throughout games
and to continue to compete and
improve.
“Five wins isn’t fantastic, but it was
the most we’ve had in the last seven
seasons and it was a step in the
right direction,” Showler said. “Now
we’ve got to come out and expect to
be better consistently - week in and
week out.”
Showler’s stance regarding starting
spots has remained the same in each
of this three years at Idaho and for
the upcoming season, nothing has
changed.
“Every player here will be competing for a starting spot on August
7,” Showler said. “They’ve got two weeks before out first game to
prove that they belong in that starting 11.”
“I have no idea what my starting 11 will be, which is a good thing
because I want that in my team’s mind that they need to prove
themselves at every single practice and every single game.”
Goalkeepers
Few positions for Idaho look as
solid as goalkeeper does entering
the 2008 season. Not only do
the Vandals return junior Anna
Sandman, who set school records
in saves (92) and shutouts
(6) last season, but they also
add highly-regarded freshman
keeper Liz Boyden, who has experience
as a U.S. national team
member in the Olympic Development
Program. Senior Michelle
Jordan has also performed well
between the pipes for the past
three seasons and Showler said
that she continues to improve every season.
Sandman started off the season on a roll last year, allowing just
two goals in the first four games and earning three shutouts. Her
solid defense kept the Vandals in most games and her shutout of
San Jose State in a clutch game at the end of the season helped
keep Idaho in the hunt for a Western Athletic Conference tournament
berth.
As always, Showler says that there will always be competition for
that starting role protecting the Vandal net.
“Anna, based on last year, has a good shot at earning that spot
again, but she knows that she can’t rest on her laurels and that

2008 Outlook
University of Idaho
Women’s Soccer
she’s going to have to be on
her toes every day at practice,”
Showler said. “I expect our other
two keepers to push her every
day for the right to start.”
Forwards
Idaho’s forwards are young,
athletic and productive, which
could be bad news for the
Vandals’ opponents this season.
Sophomore Jennifer Hull, who
led the Vandals in scoring with
six goals and one assist last
season as a true freshman, showed that she doesn’t intend to slow
down, as she scored three more in Idaho’s four spring games. Hull’s
49 shots last season rank seventh in Idaho history, while her goal
total ties for fifth.
Hull will be joined on the front by seniors Nicole McAllister and
Sonja Baumgartner, junior Ashley Perez and occasionally sophomores
Anna Edmonds and Jenny Eugenio, who will split their time
between the offensive front and the midfield. McAllister has just one
career goal, but Showler said that he expects her senior season to be
much more productive. The Vandals missed Baumgartner’s presence
on the front last season, according to Showler, and the team should
benefit from her ‘creativity’ on the field. Perez has one assist in her
Idaho career and will look to improve on a solid spring.
Edmonds scored five goals last season to finish second on the
team and Showler will look to move her closer to the front to give her
a few more scoring opportunities. Eugenio spent all of her time last
season as a defender, even though it wasn’t her natural position.
“Jenny played left back last season out of necessity,” Showler said.
“She played primarily forward before she came here and she’s got
great pace at the front.”
Midfielders
The Vandal squad appears to have a glut of midfielders for the
2008 season, but in Showler’s eyes, he has both quality and quantity.
Idaho returns its entire starting
lineup at the midfield, including
Aimee Goss, Britta Rustad, Hayley
Henry and Mel Canite. The
group enters the season with 106
combined career starts. Seniors
Amanda Triller and Ali Buswell
also saw significant playing time
last season, as Triller started six
games and Buswell started seven.
Incoming freshmen Desirae Hull
and Dani Raczykowski should
also challenge for playing time.
2008 Outlook
Edmonds should factor into the position battles on both the midfield
and the forward positions.
“What I’m really pleased with,” Showler said. “Is the depth that we
have and knowing that the competition for those starting places is
hotter than ever.”
“It makes me feel really good and it gives the players a lot of confidence
knowing that if there’s a need to put someone else in during a
game, that we’ve got a player of equal quality,” Showler said.
The competition for starting spots in the midfield should be exciting.
Goss, Rustad and Canite started every game last season, but
that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed a position.
Rustad led the team in assists with four last year, Edmonds was
second in goals and Canite was voted as the team’s Player of the
Year at the end of her freshman season last year. Goss, a senior,
has 32 career starts and has been named a team captain for the
upcoming year. Hull was a
three-time New Mexico All-State
honoree and led Los Alamos to
three straight district titles, while
Raczykowski won back-to-back
Washington club state titles
and helped lead the Spokane
Shadow to a U.S. Club Soccer
National Championship appearance.
Triller and Buswell, both
seniors, worked their way into
the starting lineup during the
season last year and will look to
keep contribute again this year.
Defenders
The back line is the lone position in which Idaho does not return
all of its starters, but that doesn’t mean it is a weak link. Team
captain and the player who Showler describes as “the rock of the
defense,” returns for her final year as a Vandal. Manning has started
43 consecutive games on the back line over the past three seasons.
Sophomore Alison “Larry” Page will look to build on a strong freshman
year in which she started 12 games before she was slowed
by an ankle injury. Eugenio, a nine-game starter at defender last
season, has moved to the front line. Junior Sari Morrison and sophomore
Alli Arnold will look to compete for time on the defense. Arnold
redshirted 2007, but had a strong spring, and Morrison worked her
way in for a pair of starts. Expect Rustad to factor into the starting
lineup as well, as she started on the back line last year, too.
Incoming freshmen Shelby Moriguchi and Danielle Hayward, along
with junior transfer Christie Richards will all be in the running for a
starting position. Moriguchi helped Kamehameha-Kapalma win three
straight Hawai’i state titles, while Hayward was a two-time All-Region
and First Team All-Central Valley Conference defender at South
Salem High School. Richards helped Clackamas C.C. set a school
record with 13 shutouts en route to a 2007 NWAAC title and also
tallied 11 assists off corner kicks during the 2007 season.

The Vandals accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference
in June 2004 and the 2005 season marked Idaho’s first season with the conference
as an all-sports member. The WAC features nine schools, including Idaho,
Boise State, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Utah State, New Mexico State, San Jose
State, Nevada and Louisiana Tech.
The 2008 season marks the WAC’s 47th year of existence, making it the
sixth-oldest conference in all of college sports. The WAC is also one of the most
diverse conferences with schools in California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Louisiana and Hawai’i.
Before July 1, 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports.
However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single
conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was
the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name.
Presently the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 18 sports – eight
men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball,
cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track
and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf,
soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track
and field and volleyball.
Hawai’i took home both the regular-season and tournament titles last season
with a 6-1 WAC record and 1-0 victory over Fresno State in the championship
University of Idaho
moscow, 83843
More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the
University of Idaho.
Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer.
Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival
or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America.
The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city
while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent.
For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out.
Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse
on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can
all be found within a few short miles from town.
state of Idaho
If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small
town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus,
and just about every choice of entertainment can be found.
At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures
rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant yearround
climate.
Moscow is:
• One of the top 100 Small Arts Towns
• Host of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival
• Largest of the 27 Moscows in the United States
• A U.S. Small Arts Center
• An Idaho “Gem Community”
When someone says “Idaho” what comes to mind? Potatoes? Or Napoleon Dynamite? There’s a lot more to
Idaho.
Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of
central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get
rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and gold,
Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State.
Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world famous sites. Here are
just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers:
• Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. –
8,000 feet deep at some points.
• Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls)
• Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser)
• The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho
• The world famous Lava Hot Springs
• The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho
• Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play
• Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest
• Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America
Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the
rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River
of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most
famous is Pend Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake
Pend Oreille.
Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing
locales are abundant all over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how
the expedition was saved from certain starvation by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe.
Idaho is the 13 th largest state in the nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime
rates and a healthy lifestyle.
Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The staterun
agency’s responsibilities include researching and expanding the Idaho potato market.
Student-Athlete Services
With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services
provides not only strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training
measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the
overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes.
“We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer
Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make
sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When
they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before
the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.”
Director of Student-Athlete Services/
Head Athletic Trainer
Barrie Steele
Barrie Steele has been the head athletic trainer at Idaho
since 1986. He oversees a full staff of certified athletic trainers
and works hand-in-hand with Idaho’s team physicians: Dr. Steve
Pennington, Dr. David Rych and Dr. Ed Tingstad.
Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Athletic Training staff will be the total overhaul of
the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a
‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one
auditorium-style meeting room were also added. After the renovation, the equipment room has nearly
doubled in size and totally new washer/dryer systems have been added to drastically cut down cleaning
times. The athletic training area has also been expanded greatly with new offices and work areas to create
more space for in-house treatment and rehab.
Athletic Training Philosophy
Statement:
The purpose of the athletic training room and staff is
for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic
injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation,
race or gender, have equal access to the training
room and the services provided therein.
The athletic training room ‘facelift,’ which will be completed in early
September, will give the staff nearly 50 percent more working space,
while the equipment room gains nearly 60 percent more working area.
Iverson Strength & Conditioning Center
The University of Idaho’s commitment to its student-athletes can be seen in the
continuing enhancement and growth of its athletic training, and strength and conditioning
services – the most notable the Norman and Becky Iverson Strength and Conditioning
Center. The $3.3 million center was dedicated on April 30, 2004.
“The Vandal Athletic Center is a huge bonus for our players,” Idaho soccer coach
Pete Showler said. “The facility is second to none. That, combined with the experience
of the Vandal Strength and Conditioning staff, gives us a great head start before we even
step on the pitch. The players can work on improving stamina, power, flexibility, and core
areas, as well as improving speed and agility; all key areas for our game.”
The floor-to-ceiling glass that fronts the building and extends down the sides provides a
spacious view of UI’s main campus. Inside, the Center is equipped with a full complement
of strength-training equipment.
As much as it has everything a student-athlete needs to remain in top condition, it
has the best in rehabilitation equipment. Among the most notable is a hydrotherapy pool,
which features a floor that can be raised and lowered depending on the need at the time.
The 8,000 square foot facility was opened for student-athlete use on March 19, 2004. It is approximately three times as large as the previous training
facility and includes a 7,000 square foot first floor used for day-to-day strength and conditioning needs. It also includes a 1,000 square foot mezzanine level
filled with cardiovascular equipment used for warm-up, conditioning and rehabilitation.
Sprinturf Practice Fields
The latest addition to Idaho’s practice facilities is the Sprinturf practice field on the east side of the ASUI
Kibbie Dome. The field is split into two 75-yard sections with a 10-yard open area in between. The $1.2
million project included lighting and fencing in addition to the infill artificial turf.
What it means to the Idaho intercollegiate, club and intramural sports programs, as well as student
groups and Moscow residents, is that a grass field that previously had just 300 useable hours annually
now has as many as 2,000 hours of use per year.
“We’re taking what had been an intercollegiate athletics-only field and opening it to everyone,” said Rob
Spear, Director of Athletics. “This is a win-win-win. There won’t be any more rain-outs. It won’t make any
difference what time it gets dark. We won’t have to keep people off of the field to maintain it.”
The two 75-yard sections are separated by a 10-yard section of Sprinturf. The 75-yard length was chosen
because it will allow enough space for both the Vandal football team and women’s soccer team to hold full
practices and it will be enough space for multiple intramural competitions, but it is also short enough that
two fields will fit. There are football goal posts at the north and south ends and the corners are marked for soccer.
“The Sprinturf gives us a great facility to use when the weather turns,” Idaho soccer coach Pete Showler said. “It is a fantastic, true surface. It is the nearest thing to grass
in terms of how ‘natural’ it is and in rebound resilience. The players are lucky to have such a tremendous facility available to them right on their doorstep.”
Infill artificial turf was first installed at the University of Nebraska in 1997. Sprinturf is the surface used by the Philadelphia Eagles in their practice facility.
Guy Wicks Field
The home of Vandal soccer, Guy Wicks Field is located north of the Kibbie Dome along Paradise Path. The
home field for Idaho’s women since the soccer program’s first season in 1998, it can hold up to 500 fans.
The University of Idaho women’s soccer program has hosted summer
soccer camps every year since its inception in 1998. The youth camps have
helped the development of young players in the Washington and Idaho
communities.
The Vandal staff is committed to providing a positive, educational soccer
experience for all the players who attend.
Vandal Individual Camp
The individual camp is designed to help players learn new skills and to
help further develop the skills they already possess. The emphasis will be
on creating a fun environment where players can learn new skills according
to their own ability levels. Players will be instructed in the dribbling, passing,
receiving and shooting.
Players are placed into age/ability appropriate groups to enhance their
learning experience and each day of the camp concludes with a series of
games in which players can showcase their skills.
Vandal High School Team Camp
The team camp has been a fixture since the summer of 2006. It is a
residential team camp for high school and graduated eighth-grade players.
Players from all around the area are invited, either with their team or as an
individual.
The camp is designed to help players develop within a team setting. Each
player will be trained in individual technical skills, as well as team-oriented
tactical strategies. In the evenings, the teams will compete against other
Vandal Soccer Camps
teams from around the area.
In addition to team training by the Idaho soccer staff, the Vandal Strength
and Conditioning coaches will supervise and instruct conditioning and
weight training sessions.
Players will stay for three nights in the residence halls and receive three
meals per day on the Idaho campus. There is also a non-residential option
to allow players to commute to the camp. In this instance, the players will
not stay overnight on campus, but will eat lunch with the rest of the campers.
Vandal Goalkeeping Camp
The goalkeeping camp will be held for three hours each day. During the
course of the camp, goalkeepers will be trained in ball-handling techniques,
shot-stopping, breakaways and in handling crosses/high balls.
Director of Athletics
Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a
crucial juncture in its storied history.
The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities
were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit
the bill.
First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves
historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding
the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the
Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The
Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie
Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were
renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes.
Ready this fall will be renovated athletic training and equipment rooms as well as
state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms. Those projects, however, are the just start.
Spear is leading a $52 million campaign that will change the face of the Kibbie Dome.
Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added
to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones
of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the
Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 93 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of
the inaugural class.
His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. This fall he begins a two-year term as a member of the NCAA Legislative
Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization.
“I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of
his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide
the best possible service to the student-athlete.”
Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on
to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden
Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of
Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he
also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993.
Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also
spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants
contracts.
He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.
Offside:
Explanation
One of the hardest rules to understand, offsides results when a player moves into a position where she is closer to the
possession of the ball and she gains an advantage by being in that position. The charts below illustrate onside versus offside.
deflected by the goalkeeper or a defender and does not score, it is not considered a shot on goal. A shot on goal must result
in either a save by the goalkeeper or a goal by the attacking team.
A save is officially awarded only when a goalkeeper or defender stops or deflects a shot on goal. To receive credit for a save,
the goalkeeper must have stopped a shot that otherwise would have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper who stops a shot or a
cross is not credited with a save.
Also called a “crossing pass,” a cross is a kick from a wide position on the field into the penalty area in front of the goal with
the intent of setting up scoring opportunity for a teammate.
A player is credited with an assist when she makes a pass that directly results in a goal. Each scoring play can result a
maximum of two assists or none at all. A player is credited with an assist if she makes a pass to a teammate, who then
scores a goal without losing possession or having to elude a defender. If a player takes a shot and misses, she can be
awarded an assist if a teammate scores off the rebound, but only if the defense doesn’t gain possession before she shoots.
A direct free kick that is awarded at the spot of an infraction for a physical contact foul such as tripping, holding, pushing,
tackling from behind and jumping into an opponent. It is also awarded after a hand ball infraction. A direct free kick can be
scored by going directly into the goal and does not have to be touched by anyone other than the player kicking the ball.
An indirect free kick is awarded at the spot of less serious, non-contact infractions like obstruction, as well as offside
infractions. Indirect kicks must touch another player, offense or defense, before the ball goes into the net in order to be
credited with a score.
A direct free kick that results from the defending team putting the ball out of bounds on the end line. The attacking team gets
to kick the ball from the area around the corner flag and may score directly from the corner.
A player is shown a yellow card as a disciplinary action for minor offenses, such as unsporting behavior, delaying the game,
persistently committing fouls, or deliberately leaving or entering the field without the referee’s permission. A second yellow
card results in a red card for the player.
A player is shown a red card as a major disciplinary action. Actions that result in a red card include serious foul play, violent
conduct, spitting at a player, being given two yellow cards or deliberately handing a ball or fouling another player to prevent a
goal or goal-scoring opportunity. The player given the red card must immediately leave the playing area and may not be
replaced by a substitute, leaving her team short-handed for the remainder of the match.
In order to complete a substitution, a team must inform the referee in advance and must wait until a stoppage of play. The
substitute may only enter the field of play once the other player leaves the field and the referee gives her permission to enter
the field. In NCAA soccer, a player who leaves the field during the first half may re-enter in the second, but a player who
leaves during the second half can’t return.
