"If the young fellows have the money today, they don't need to farm." Albert says. "The cost of equipment is just too much for someone starting out. Young people aren't getting into it any more; there 's just no incentive. Who's going to buy a farm nowadays?" "Things look like they might be gelling better," adds Freda. "but those that work the hardest don't seem to get the benefits. The fanners association here is getting things organized and creat ing some jobs. People should be working instead of sitting home collecting unemployment. Social services should be for invalids and not there for people not to work. We're the ones who are paying for it. DECKS AWASH - 31 rAnimal farm he road leading from Victoria to Albert Wareham's T pasture is unpaved. Crawling uphill in our car we begin to understand why farmers favor four-wheel drive vehicles. Final Iv we reach Albert's barn, only Albert is another mile up the road. " Is that a government car?" asks one of Albert's men. "No, it's our own." "In that case you'd better leave it here and come with us," he says with a broad grin. " It' s a pretty rough road up ahead ." Thankfully, we climb into their -1 by -1 and begin a roller-coaster ride complete with water splash as we ford a brook. At the top of the hill Albert, 41, is spreading fertilizer on his pasture but comes over to talk . "We've got 100beef cattle and -12 spring calves," says Albert. " We've also got 15horses including a Clydesdale and a Belgian stallion, 50 sheep and 20 goats . We've been at it for 20 years, although on a smaller sca le, The skipper, my father Chesley Wareham, works at it full time. I come up whenever I can get time off from the wholesale." Albert is proprietor of a wholesale grocery business in Carbonea r with over 30 em ployees, He started the business after failing to be accepted by the ReMP as a police officer in 1961. "I was accepted but you had to be 165lbs. and I was 162.Today I'm over 100pounds heavier," he laughs .
