After a few mintues we are at the Van Koetsveld farm and soon we are at the door of the gr eenhouse . Linda Van Koetsveld takes time off from a busy day of moving plans and vegetabl es to explain how the operation she runs with her husband, George, developed. "Geo rge is Dutch and was born in J ava. a teacher. We met there and came to Canada four years ago last May. Neither of us liked the urban environment as we'd come from rural backgrounds. My father was on vacation visiting his cousin at the base in Argentia when he became sick. George and I came with our 4-year-old daughter and moved him to a larger hospital in St. John's. We fell in love with the province and decided to move here. "We realized that the island has not been self-sufficient in fanning and there's no reason why it shouldn't be except that for years the emphasis has been on the fisheries and the forests. Agriculture has been ignored by all the political parties. In Holland 90%of the produce is grown under glass and they are on the same latitude as we are. The season is a little shorter here and the winter is harsher, but the light intensity is the same." Linda and George spent their first year working on building a house and providing enough food for themselves, so their second year was really their first growing season. The first year we came here we had 80 acres of land, 30of which were cleared, and we had some cows," Linda recalls. "The first two years we were more concerned with building a house and by the time we got going we had our vegetables and began the business of selling transplants. The first year I had a few packets of flower seeds just for myself really, but we soon realized that the flowers were being sold more than the vegetables in our first growing season. "Our initial intention was to grow vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes and zucchinis that have to be imported but we discovered that <strong>Newfoundland</strong>ers had not yet started to acquire a taste for such exotic things as zucchinis. To avoid starving to death we decided we had better get into something more secure and got into the flower business.
