Two of the highlights of the Temple are the Confirmation of our 10 th grade
students and the Orim Graduation of our high school seniors. Confirmation
is held on the holiday of Shavuot, the holiday which co-memorates
(i.e., we remember it together) God’s revelation of Torah to the Israelites
at Mount Sinai. The master-image of Confirmation is that the class, a microcosm
of the Jewish People representing its generation, stands at its
own collective Mt. Sinai, receiving and confirming the Torah that has
been taught/revealed to each of them as individuals. In their speeches,
they share the Jewish values that are important to them and the moments
in their Jewish lives that meant the most to them. In a sense, they
are revealing their personal Torah as experienced in their personal Sinai
moments. A Sinai moment is one that leads to Jewish growth and personal
transformation. One’s Torah consists of the lessons learned in such
Sinai moments and, more importantly, how one lives a Jewish life in response
to what was experienced and learned.
Personally, I have had a number of Sinai moments, some cumulative over
my lifetime, like my upbringing in an active, observant Reform household
and my ongoing Jewish studies, beginning in Talmud Torah nursery school
and continuing still. There were certain transformative experiences, like
my first Youth Group retreat, my first year in Israel and my experience performing
at army camps and hospitals during and after the Yom Kippur
War. And of course, as I shared last fall, my encounter with Rabbi Moish,
the agnostic, Orthodox Rabbi.
So nu, what if it were you being confirmed this month? What would you
say was your Torah, the Jewish values, world-view and way of life, and
what were your Sinai moments, the most meaningful and transformative
experiences that shaped your Jewish values and world-view?
Back in March, we read from the Haggadah, “In every generation, each
of us is to see ourselves as if we ourselves went out from Egypt.” Not only
are we to see ourselves as if we went out of Egypt, as importantly, each of
us are bidden to see ourselves continually leaving Egypt, continually pushing
beyond the boundaries of our own narrownesses. (Narrowness,
“mitzarim,” is a play on the word for Egypt, mitzraim.”) While it is not so
explicit on Shavuot, the resolve is the same. Each of us is called to see
ourselves as if we stood at Mt. Sinai and received Torah. And each of us
as Jews is called to see ourselves continually standing at Sinai and receiving
Torah.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes
she wears, the figure that she carries, or the
way she combs her hair. The beauty of a
woman is seen in her eyes, because that is
the doorway to her heart, the place where
love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Our Congregational Meeting is Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 PM
Ok, raise your hands. Who has attended a Congregational Meeting in the last five years? Hmmm, I
can’t see you out there. Nope, I didn’t see many of you at the meetings either and I am pretty sure I
was there. Maybe it was the entertainment…okay, Roberts Rules of Order can be boring… I get it. Or
maybe it is not about the entertainment. Maybe it is about our community, where we are and where
we are going. You just might want to meet the members of your Board of Trustees who have been
working hard to create the Temple B’nai Or of the future. Yes, we will be electing a new slate of Trustees
with some familiar names and some new ones.
At this meeting you can hear about what we have accomplished this year, and hear from Board members
about what we hope to accomplish in the year to come. You will hear about our strengths, as well
as the challenges we tackle through the year. We are on a journey, and we want you to be part of
that journey. You may not have the band width to come to meetings, work on projects, or take a seat
on the Board. But for one meeting per year, we want to see you and hear from you. Temple B’nai Or is
your community and your Board of Trustees cares deeply about the things that are important to you.
Join us at the Congregational Meeting on May 16 to share your thoughts with the Board. As with many
of the things that we do, it is all simply intended to bring us together as community to create a sustainable,
growing congregation, creating the synagogue of the future…where community is built, relationships
are nurtured and where we are all inspired to be our best.
Shalom,
Susan Levinson
Rabbi Rossoff (continued)
Whenever Torah is read in Temple, we recite
blessings which frame the reading, one before
and one after. The blessings thank the
Holy One asher natan lanu, “who gave us
the Torah,” (past tense) the Torah, the
source of the Jewish People’s
unique mission and eternal
life. But it is with purpose that
both blessings conclude
blessing God “notayn haTorah,
who “gives us the Torah,”
continually, every day of our lives, but,
like the Israelites at Mt. Sinai, the gift of Torah
is given only to those open to receiving this
most precious gift.
Our celebration of Shavuot, the season of
Torah giving, begins the evening of May 14,
with a very special Confirmation Service at 7
p.m. and continues the next morning at 10
a.m. with a Festival Service and Yizkor.
Rabbi Don Rossoff
SHABBAT IN THE FOREST
Plan to join us on Friday, May 11, in the
early afternoon when we go into the
woods with our ancient prayers. We will
have an extremely modified Shabbat Service
while hiking in Lewis Morris Park.
Please mark your calendars. More information
will follow, and we hope you will join
us. Your presence means everything.
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
Jewish education is creative, vibrant, multi-dimensional, and focused. Too many people feel supplemental
schools are failing because they see decreasing enrollment and minimal commitment. Truth be told, religious
school today doesn’t at all resemble what many adults went through. Considering the vast knowledge
that needs to be transmitted and the limited time to do that within, and the emphasis on Bar/Bat
Mitzvah preparation, the Jewish educational system deserves credit for the outcome it produces.
The focus of Jewish education is in the midst of a paradigm shift. No longer is the main goal transmitting
Jewish identity to the students. Jewish continuity can no longer be our educational goal.
We now shift into providing learners ways to construct meaningful Jewish lives. Many will choose his/her
own path and design what works for them. We need Jews to embrace their Jewishness and value their
involvement with the Jewish world. We know that relationships built at Temple will influence what our children
will do. Teachers, clergy, and all involved must inspire our learners so they become active participants.
Parents need to partner in this venture providing enriched experiences. Together we can shape a
meaningful Jewish future.
Instead of focusing on what is wrong with American Jewish life, let us work together to reinvent it for the
next generation. Religious affiliation is important. We are responsible to successfully transmit loyalty to our
traditions and observances. They may look differently in the future but must be an important part of the
American Jewish fabric. We have much work to do.
PRE-SCHOOL
Thank you to everyone who attended our Shop & Schmooze on April 24!!! More detailed thank yous to
come in the June bulletin.
It is Spring at Pre-School, and this brings lots of time on the playground. We love being outdoors, embracing
our environment, and teaching the children about how things grow. We see a huge difference in the
growth of our students between September and now. We are nearing the end of our school year, and we
get incredible gratification from the work that we’ve done. I am known for saying, “Only big kids go to
school!” Well, these kids are bigger in every way. Their vocabulary, their motor skills, and their cognitive
skills have all grown because of the careful planning and fostering of their nurturing teachers. Their love for
each other and most importantly, their love of learning is evident in each new encounter, and every moment
of exploration.
It is so important for children to be exposed to things that challenge all of their senses. Our program utilizes
a multi-sensory approach to learning. Children see, hear, smell, and touch each new concept which allows
for learning in a variety of ways. We all learn differently, but children who learn by doing grasp skills
that go way beyond the academic. Every moment of play stretches the brain’s capacity, and creates
pathways to additional learning. Make every moment outdoors special with your preschooler by acknowledging
the physical make up their environment, in addition to the sounds and smells. Teach patience
when it’s time to wait for a turn. Teach kindness and understanding when they encounter someone or
something that requires these skills. Getting dirty and running around are some of the best parts of being
outside. Make it okay to stomp in the mud when it’s appropriate. Make it fun to splash in the puddles
when you can. The freedom of outside voices and less strict boundaries are the privileges of Spring time.
These are the memories that will remain with them throughout their lives.
Registration is still open for next year’s Pre-School classes (ages 24 months through Pre-Kindergarten), and
for our summer camp. Our classes are almost filled, but there are some spots still remaining. We’d love to
tell you about our philosophy, our curriculum, and the many different aspects of the program we are offering.
Feel free to give me a call at 973.267.6424. I’d love to answer your questions.
Renaissance News
New Renaissance activities now and during the summer. Perhaps the most exciting event is the planned
bus trip to New Hope and the newly refurbished Bucks County Playhouse on June 2. We have reserved
some of the best seats in the house for the production of that always favorite "Mame" starring Andrea
McArdle (of "Annie" fame). We will be leaving the Temple B'nai Or parking lot in time to explore New Hope
and have lunch on our own before we meet back at the theater. The cost of the ticket, and transportation
is $70 (ticket price alone at the box office is $62.50). A limited number of tickets are available. Send your
reservation to Mitzi at 5 Windmill Drive, Morristown 07960 TODAY.
Take a trip to the Lower East Side. See it transformed from the old to the new! Our guide, Martin Schneit,
will enable us to do just that from the comfort of TBO at a Renaissance luncheon on May 8. Cost of the
luncheon is $12 for Renaissance members and $16 for guests. Meet and greet begins at noon, luncheon at
12:30 p.m., program begins about 1:15 p.m. It should be a great way to spend the day.
….And now for June: Remember the Sunday Fun day that was destroyed by a snow storm. Well, what is
wrong with having a Sunday Fun day on a Wednesday? Well Renaissance has magically
changed Sunday Funday to EAT and PLAY DAY. And we will do just that on Wednesday, June
12 (that is the benefit of being retired and having flexible time). We will have the usual schedule
of lunch and entertainment by singer/story teller Ken Galiepeau AND then have the opportunity
to play canasta, bridge, mah jongh, or just plain schmooze with friends for the rest of
the afternoon. Cost is $12 for Renaissance members, $16 for guests. If it is a nice day, we
might have lunch and entertainment in our courtyard.
Remember: Make reservations for everything. Those who arrive without a reservation will be paying extra
(and perhaps not getting food). It is just not fair to those who have made reservations ahead of time and
for whom food has been ordered.
On the horizon for the Summer are a Brunch (or maybe a lunch) at a lake, the annual B-B-Q (supervised
carefully by one of our members ensuring plenty of food--no caterer), and a swim party. Watch for details.
