publishers, book sellers
and authors
In January 2012 Queensland schools commenced
implementation of the Australian Curriculum. This
involved students from Prep to Year 10 starting to engage
in learning and assessment in the Australian Curriculum
learning areas of English, mathematics and science.
Education Queensland schools have been provided with
comprehensive, electronic curriculum planning and
resource materials — the Curriculum into the classroom
(C2C) collection. These materials, released in draft and for
consultation, have been developed to support and guide
schools’ implementation of the Australian Curriculum.
The C2C materials consist of planning documents that
detail the knowledge, understanding and skills that will
be taught, and that students will have opportunities to
learn, for each year level. They include detailed lesson
plans that provide teachers with examples of how they
might deliver the curriculum. The teaching episodes in
these plans use extracts from sample print and electronic
texts, and link to online resources, in order to model ways
in which the teacher might build student knowledge and
understanding. These resources are included as examples
only. Their inclusion does not constitute a promotion or
endorsement of their use in schools by Education
Queensland.
The C2C materials have been designed to provide
teachers with a starting point for curriculum planning.
Schools are provided with the flexibility and choice to
adopt or adapt the materials to suit the learning needs of
their students and local context. The capacity for teachers
to customise the C2C materials and to select the texts and
resources that they will use to deliver the curriculum is
vital — what is relevant, appropriate and will work in one
classroom will not necessarily suit another.
Education Queensland appreciates that publishers,
booksellers and authors are keen to support teachers in
their implementation of the new Australian Curriculum by
having quality Australian books available. The following
frequently asked questions have been developed to
inform publishers, booksellers and authors of the C2C
materials and how they are intended to be used by
schools.
If you have a specific query relating to the C2C
materials that has not been addressed in the
following FAQs please write to:
Curriculum into the classroom (C2C) — A factsheet for publishers, book sellers and authors
Education Queensland Version 2, 19 April 2013
Frequently asked questions
15.1 Can we obtain copies of the book lists
included in the C2C materials?
The scope of the C2C project does not extend to
recommending or endorsing the products and services of
external providers to schools. A list of the texts that have
been referred to as examples is available on request.
There is no list of recommended texts as such, to support
teachers’ use of the C2C materials. Whilst sample
teaching episodes provided in lesson plans use extracts
from print and electronic texts, to model ways in which
teachers might deliver the curriculum, teachers are not
required to use them. Instead they are encouraged to
personalise lesson plans and to use texts and resources
that:
• are already available in their school’s collection
• meet the learning needs and interests of their students
• align with the expectations of the Australian
Curriculum.
The decision as to what texts and resources are best
suited to support the implementation of the Australian
Curriculum and student learning is that of the individual
school, in consultation with their community.
If schools elect to build on their current text and resource
collection, they are able to seek advice from, and
communicate their requirements to, suppliers and
publishers.
15.2 Are the C2C materials available for
publishers, booksellers and authors to
preview?
No.
15.3 Can publishers, booksellers and
authors have a login and password to
access the Learning Place website and/or
OneSchool?
15.5 Can authors and publishers apply to
have a particular text/s included in the C2C
materials?
The C2C writers are responsible for selecting the texts and
resources that they use in sample teaching episodes, in
consultation with teachers. Requests from publishers and
authors to include references to their products are
declined to ensure that the Department is not seen to be
endorsing or promoting the products and services of
particular suppliers.
Publishers and distributors have existing mechanisms in
place to promote their books, authors and services to
schools — they should continue using these, as they have
done so in previous years.
15.6 Schools have been requesting copies
of books which are now out-of-print. Can
authors and publishers recommend
substitutes?
Substitutes may be recommended to individual schools
through the school librarian or principal.
15.7 Is information available to support
schools’ selection of literary texts, and
guide publishers and booksellers’
suggestions to schools?
For advice on the selection of literary texts refer to the
Australian Curriculum website.
Before selecting texts to support teaching and student
learning teachers are advised to consult the Content
descriptions for the Australian Curriculum learning area
and Year level. Information about the specific knowledge,
understanding and skills outlined in the Content
descriptions should be used to inform decisions about the
appropriateness of texts and resources.
No.
15.4 Who can publishers, booksellers and
authors contact to find out if one of their
texts is referred to in the C2C materials?
Publishers, booksellers and authors are able to contact
C2Cfeedback@deta.qld.gov.au if they wish to enquire
about the inclusion of a particular text in the C2C
materials.
