sail to the Eastwd after firing the ship. we stood to<br />

the N. W. in order to bring the other sail under our<br />

Lee by morning, all night light airs, continued in sight<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Ship on Fire, at 9 PM saw the flash <strong>of</strong> Guns in<br />

the E.S.E. at day light discover'd the sail we saw last<br />

night, bearing South. appeared a large Ship with all<br />

Sail set. standing to the Westwd gave chase all sail<br />

set, at 6 perceived she had painted sides & a Tier <strong>of</strong><br />

PortS (20) got every thing ready for action & stood<br />

down on her quarter. at 7 came along side, she<br />

hoisted English colours, we hoisted American Flag, &<br />

ordered her to strike her colours which she instantly<br />

did. was from Grenock to St Andrews in Ballast,<br />

being a fine ship, I mann'd her, sending on board<br />

Mr Jas Stubbs & 6 hands leaving 4 hands <strong>of</strong> the Ship<br />

on board, & I hand from the Ship 1 had burnt , &<br />

ordered her into the first Port in the United States.<br />

she is called the Kitty <strong>of</strong> 305 Tons, Daniel Thompson<br />

Master The Ship Burnt was call'd the Princess Royal<br />

189 Ton Saml Heath Master, at 9 left the Prize &<br />

stood to the N.N.E. No Observation<br />

Saturday 1st August 1812. Light airs. standing to the<br />

Eastwd at 6 P.M. Stood N.E. light winds, at 8 a m<br />

discover'd a Sail to the Northwd at 9 saw two other<br />

sail to the N .E. at meridian came up with the Chase, a<br />

Brig out <strong>of</strong> St Johns Newfoundland loaded with Cod<br />

Fish 18,000, having a number <strong>of</strong> Prisoners was<br />

anxious to get rid <strong>of</strong> them, sent the two Mates <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Ship Kitty, & Princess Royal, on board with 6 <strong>of</strong> their<br />

hands with orders to follow us , & to send the Capt <strong>of</strong><br />

the Brig on board, which they did. we then gave chase<br />

to the two others found her to be the Brig Brothers <strong>of</strong><br />

St Johns Richd Penny Master & 9 men cargo as<br />

Sunday 2d Augt A fine breeze from the Southwd, at 3 P.M.<br />

came up with the Chase another Brig withe Cod­<br />

Fish put on board her the Capt <strong>of</strong> the Prize Ship<br />

Princess Royal & 4 <strong>of</strong> his men, with orders to follow<br />

us & to send the Capt on board, which was done. she<br />

is the Brig Fame <strong>of</strong> Exeter England, Wm Standard<br />

Master witht8.000 Cod Fish at- 3 continued our<br />

chase after the other who had haul'd her wind to the<br />

Easwd at 4 diseoverd a Schooner at Anchor fishing,<br />

at 6 P.M. got near enough the Brig to fire a shot at<br />

her, She hove too, we sent a boat on board, with<br />

orders to set her on Fire, & immediately bore down on<br />

the Schooner Sent our other boat on board with<br />

orders to send the prisoners on board, & to set her on<br />

Fire also, at 7 P.M. both vessels were in a Blaze The<br />

one, the Brig Devonshire <strong>of</strong> Exeter, the other the Schr<br />

Squid also <strong>of</strong> Exeter. the Brig had 21,000 fish, and the<br />

Schr 18,000 with 21 Prisoners. at 8 P.M. bore away<br />

after our two other Prizes, at 112 past II fell in with<br />

them sent an <strong>of</strong>ficer & men on board the Brig<br />

Devonshire & set her on fire ; we then put on board<br />

the Brig Brothers all our Prisoners consisting <strong>of</strong> §.<br />

Masters, 6 Mates & 50 Men; tOt [took] a Receipt from<br />

the Captains, that they acknowledged themselves<br />

Prisoners <strong>of</strong> War to the U.S. & that they would not<br />

serve against us untill regularly exchanged they &<br />

their crews: at 2 a .m. parted with them & stood to the<br />

Eastwd at 8 a.m. Saw a sail to the North. gave<br />

chase. soon after discover'd 4 more. continued<br />

our chase with light airs to the Southwd Latt Obs.<br />

Monday Aug 3d 1812 at 2 P.M. came up with a Schooner,<br />

sent the boat on board & ran down to Leeward to a<br />

Brig, our Boat took possession <strong>of</strong> the Schr and<br />

brought her down to us. She was a Fisherman with<br />

Fish caU'd the Race Horse , Capt John Mudge 8,000<br />

fish the Brig was the Henry, Capt Wm Halling both<br />

from St Johns, we took out the Crews & scuttled
