Series VII. Press clippings and publications, 1951-2004, undated
Physical Description: 12.51 linear ft.(circa 28 boxes)
Scope and Content Note
The bulk of press articles date from the late 1950s to the late 1990s. The predominant portion is clipped
from daily newspapers Rheinische Post, Düsseldorfer Nachrichten, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Occcasionally, articles from other German press are present, such as Handelsblatt, Kölner Stadtanzeiger,
Deutsche Zeitung, Neue Rhein Zeitung, Neues Rheinland, Die Welt, Düsseldorfer Wochenspiegel,
Aachener Nachrichten, Der Mittag and Das Kunstwerk. A few transcripts from the foreign press are
included. Numerous articles are by John Anthony Thwaites, the British art critic and author who lived and
worked in West Germany from 1946.
Present are reviews of exhibitions and invitation cards to exhibitions held at Galerie Schmela; reviews of
group shows held in museums and galleries in Germany and abroad; articles about Documenta 6 and 7;
reviews of art auctions; issues of various magazines which include articles about Alfred Schmela or the
gallery; articles concerning trends in contemporary art, art criticism, or politcs of art, and articles on
individual artists, collectors, museum curators, art dealers, and art institutions. Filed at the end of this
series are correspondence, press clippings, and other records concerning Kölner Kunstmarkt, and four
publications annotated or marked with references to Alfred Schmela.
Press clippings are also included in Series I. Correspondence and Series VI. Ephemera. Press clippings
on Joseph Beuys, Yves Klein, and ZERO are also filed with Series II.
Arrangement
The twelve subseries preserve the original topical order of files kept at the gallery, except for invitation
cards which were originally filed with reviews of exhibitions held at Galerie Schmela, but were pulled to
form a separate subseries. Most subseries are arranged chronologically or alphabetically. The subseries
Kölner Kunstmarkt is grouped by category of documents, with correspondence, price lists, and press
clippings subdivided chronologically. The four publications are listed, but not arranged.
