SCHMELA RECORDS, 1923-2006, bulk
1957-1992 ...
Series I.C. Clients, 1951-1996, undated
Physical Description: 7.51 linear feet(18 boxes)
Scope and Content Note
This subseries is comprised of sales records and other business correspondence with private and
corporate art collectors, including banks and industrial companies, museum curators, publishing
houses, and various other cultural institutions in Europe and in United States. Nearly all major German
art museums are represented, especially from the Rhine-Ruhr region. The letters provide insight into
the collecting interests of many of the gallery's clients, and Alfred Schmela's professional activities as
an art dealer, particularly his ways of attracting buyers, his opinion about the artists he represented,
and current art market trends. The letters show Schmela advising curators about new art movements
and thus influencing the shape of German art museums' collections and exhibiting programs.
Frequently included are details regarding particular artworks, such as title, dimensions, technique,
year of creation, and sales price. Occasionally present are shipping invoices, insurance documents,
bank statements, and other financial records. Interfiled with this subseries are documents concerning
maintenance, repair, utility expenses, and insurance records of the gallery spaces, and the Schmela
family's various personal and business expenses.
Arrangement
The original arrangement maintained at Galerie Schmela is preserved. The files are divided
the 1990s. Each group is arranged alphabetically. Unidentified clients are filed at the end of each letter
sequence. Each group includes a few items from an earlier or later date, as originally filed at the
gallery.
