Scope and Content Note<br />

This subseries comprises Alfred <strong>Schmela</strong>'s correspondence with artists represented by the gallery, as<br />

well as with other artists. The most extensive files are for Shusaku Arakawa, Joseph Beuys, Christo,<br />

Lucio Fontana, Michael Gitlin, Robert Indiana, Christian Löwenstein, Georges Mathieu, Robert Morris,<br />

Walter Pichler, Otto Piene, Raphael Jesús Soto, and Richard Tuttle. Occasionally included are<br />

correspondence with clients, lists of their names and addresses, insurance and shipment <strong>records</strong>,<br />

printed exhibition annoucements and press clippings, curriculum vitae, photographs of artwork,<br />

personal photographs, and original artwork, such as holiday or greeting cards made by the artists. The<br />

Louise Nevelson file consists of carbon copies of a circular sent to art museums in Germany regarding<br />

an exhibition of Nevelson's artwork at the gallery. Also filed with this series is <strong>Schmela</strong>'s<br />

correspondence with art museums in Europe, United States, and Japan regarding the sale of an<br />

artwork by Piet Mondrian. See also the Yves Klein files in Series II. for copies of letters.<br />
