STUDENT NURSE OF THE YEAR At the Student Nurses meeting at Traverse City last week Julia Koops R. N. of Grand Rapids was named "1959 Student Nurse of the Year" by the Michigan Nurses Association. President Phyllis McKay presented the award at the banquet October 15, Miss Koops is a graduate of Blodgett Memorial Hospital, Grand Rapids and had been an industrial nurse for 18 years. She has distinguished herself in workshops throughout the state. She is employed by the Fisher Body Division, General Motors, Grand Rapids, since 1942 and handles some 1000 employees. Rose Jeffreys, Ella Claire Fitch and Lottie Blades were absent from school last week. George Taylor of Ntifth Brighton harvested 309 bushel of white beans from 14 acres and 264 bushel of red kidney beans from 10 acres. For $10,000 an Indianapolis man is pushing a wheel barrow across the country from coast to coast. Fred and Fannie Swarthout have enrolled at Ferris Institute. Supremo Court Hands Down Important Ruling A far reaching ruling was affirmed last week by the United Stales Supreme Court when it affirmed a decision by an appeals court in a case in Carroll county, Mississippi. Robert Goldsby, a negro was convicted of murder there and appealed. The grounds for the appeal was that negroes were barred from jury duty there despite the fact that half of the county's population was negro. Not a single negro is registered to vote there. The court gave Carroll county 8 months to retry Goldsby before a regularly constituted jury drawn from a list of eligibles which includes members of both races indiscriminately. If they fail to do this Goldsby must be set free. There are many southern counties where negroes in the south are not permitted to serve on jury. This means they will have to change their laws or set all negroes convicted by all white juries free. Procedure is somewhat different in this county. A few years ago some Detroit negroes were arrested at or near Howell for a traffic offense. They pled not guilty and Stanley Berriman defended them. Two negroes living at Howell were drawn for jury duty and the accused negroes were found not guilty. Danny Amburgey, son of Mrs. Mary Higgs underwent a tonsil operation at McPherson Hospital Howell, last week. Herbert Pagel of Pinckney, William Backlund of Hamburg and Jean Marshall and Betty Henizman of Gregory have been commissioned notary publics. From October 5th to Oct. 12, 43 cars were involved in accidents in Livingston county. There were no fatalities, 16 persons injured, and 18 property damage accidents.
