BOth Anniversary of
Light Noted on October 21
October 21, 1879 is the 80th
anniversary of Thomas Edison s
invention of the first practical
electric light He started with an
investment of $40,000 of his own
money and $300,000 provided by
a group of businessmen. Today
the value of plant and equipment
of electric light plants ii $44,000,
000,000. We are ahead of Russians
there. In 1957 United
States capacity was 146,221,000
kilowatt while Russia was 160,
219 kilowats. Millions are employed
in electric industries now.
Edisons first customers paid
$2.53 a kilowatt. The price now
is 2.53 tenths cents.
The story of light is interesting
Torches made of resinous material
were first used. Abe Lincoln
is said to have learned to
read by the light of blazing pine
knots. Candles were used for
years but they were expensive although
many made their own
from tallow. After the civil war
kerosene oil and gas was used
also gasoline pressure lamps. My
father used big brass kerosene
lamps to light his store.
Edison first used a carbon
thread filament in his incadescent
light bulb. It gave a tiny light
not much bigger than a firefly.
The first electric lights I saw
were about 1900. You had to
have a lot of the carbon lights
to get much illumination. They
came on about 5 p.m. and went
out at midnight. Electricity was
gines next. When I first started
in the printing business the machinery
was operated by a gasoline
engine. Many stores and homes
still used gas lights in the nineties.
The first street lights were furnished
by two big carbon pencils
in a glass globe when the
current jumped from one to the
other it made a blinding white
light
Pinckney did not get electric
light! until about 1910. It was
installed by Glenn Gardner. Gasoline
or steam engines furnished
the power. The first electric
light plants were owned by private
persons or villages who
bonded to raise the cost. The
Detroit Edison Co. did not come
here until 1921.
Conservation
Notes
The October conservation had
mostly to do with land. One
hall of the 2000 acre Qgemaw
State game refuge was transferred
to the Ogemaw county board of
supervisors. They will manage
it which the Ten Lakes Sportsmen's
Club will furnish the funds.
They added 640 acres to conservation
lands at Middlevilk, 447
at Proud Lake, 55 at Day Park
and 72 at Muskellunge Lake.
Drawings for the any deer
season will be held in 31 of the
Lansing at 10 a.m. There are
214,614 applications for 101,
000 permits.
The muskrat, mink and raccoon
trapping! seasons start Oct
