.*••*• ::>tncy General Rules
on Us-* Tax Collections
The Michigan Attorney General
has ruled that the Use Tax if
not a sales tax but a use tax on
the use and consumption of food
and must be collected separately.
That the method of collection was
written into the law and that those
who are collecting 6c on a $1.49
sale are collecting too much. The
Michigan Retailers Association
sent out a tax collection table in
which the use tax was to be collected
with the sales tax on the
basis of one cent to a 17c to 37c
purchase. The use tax reads no
use tax can be collected on purchases
of less than 50c. In their
arguments before the supreme
court the supporters for the use
tax argued that it was an entirely
new tax different from the
sales tax.
The supreme court is expected
to hand down a decision on the
constitutionality of the use tax
this week.
"Trick or Treat 11 Wasn't
Always with Us on
Hallowe'en, October 31
The Livingston County Press
had an indignant letter from a
mother last week bemoaning the
fact that the Howell school had
sent a note home by pupils asking
last year that they not go out
"Trick or Treating" that the
school would give them treats instead.
She said this deprived her
children from enjoying the pleasure
of going around from house
to house trick or treating, with
a bag for the treats. We do not
follow her line of reasoning. Trick
and treat, unheard of in our distant
youth has become a racket,
the residents here on Halloween
are usually visited by over 100
children, some of whom come
from as far as 10 miles away to
fill their bags. Some of them
are not over 2 years old and are
subjected to the traffic hazards of
that night. The people here are
kept busy that night answering
their doorbell.
State Police Report
on Water Accidents
Two hundred and sixty-one
persons were drowned and 76 injured
in 398 water accidents in
Michigan this year. Of the
drownings 33 were boat operators,
60 passengers, 76 swimmers,
2 skin divers, 1 water
skiier, 23 children who wandered
away, 11 who fell in the water
For an easy dessert, almost as
good as pie, sweeten and flavor
cooked fresh fruit (any kindf to
taste with sugar and pure vanilla
extract Heat and serve over hot
buttered toast
costums on Halloween and that
we will dance that day. The rest
of the party has not been decided
yet.
On Monday we made pictures.
We cut everything out of paper.
Today our book reports were
handed in.
