A CHILD'S PLAY
Play can help a child learn to
get along with people. This is
because play leads him through
the different steps in social contacts.
A childs first social contact is
with adults, and children in the
play-pen set are still full of effcction
for adults. They have not
as yet developed a sympathy for
other children just as they did
their toys earlier.
Because children under two do
not usually play well together, it
is best to interest each child in
an activity that will not include
another. A child around two
feels that his toys are a part of
him and so is not willing to share
them. He will often follow a favorite
toy from one room to another,
thus making him more
manageable.
"No", "don't", and "mine" are
sound effects that often accompany
the group play of children
around two years of age. A child
of this age is not yet a social being
with his own age group.
Because of this, an older child
of perhaps five or six is a good
first playmate for a two-year old.
The smaller child is not so tempted
to push or bit and older
playmate. Then too, an older
child is not so likely to take the
two-year old's favorite toy away
from him.
Often, by the time a child
reaches the age of three, he shows
his readiness for social contacts.
He begins to take an interest in
the feelings of others. When
mother has a headache, he is
likely to say, "Poor momey,
head hurts."
His vocabulary has grown too.
'. and he is able to carry on a conversation.
The word "we" is
now a part of his vocabulary and
he is not afraid to share his toys.
Aad because of a better develop-
1
ed time sense, a child around
three is more willing to wait for
a turn.
An onlooker may be shocked
. by the social crudities of many
four-year-olds. Cliques may be
formed and outsiders may be
rudely excluded from the group.
Clowning, bragging, and the "I'll
go you one better" kind ot behavior
is typical of the four year old
silliness that often causes squabbling
and hurt feelings.
However, a new idea suggested
by an adult can often avert
the deterioration of play. For
instance, if two tricycles collide.
a quick suggestion that the children
play hospital and treat the
"wounded" can stop a series of
collisions because bumping looked
like fun.
Children around five years of
age can more easily distinguish
between rnagic and reality. They
want to know all about the world
and their interest expand as fast
as their experiences. These experiences
may include excursions,
books, seeing people at work,
testing materials in new ways
and helping adults.
PROPS FOR PLAY
During his preschool years, a
child goes through several different
phases of play. It is important
that children have the
right "props" or toys to enrich
their play.
A child around a year old, for
example, is at the "take-out, putin"
age. When he's in the kitchen
with his mother, he loves to empty
all the cupboards and wastebaskets
he can reach. But instead,
give him some pans of different
sizes and let him fill them with
small toys. Or give him clothespins
and a bread pan and show
him how to place the pins on the
side of the pan and in the pan.
CORDUROY GUIDES
FOR HOME SEWING
Corduroy is used widely in
home sewing, but it is one fabris
that gets a lot of abuse.
Dorothy Erler, clothing specialist
at Michigan State University,
says people neglect special techniques
in handling the fabric
that could give garments a professional
look.
Pile can run up or down-or
around. But corduroy pile must
all go in the same direction. If
the pile runs up, the fabric has
a richer appearance. If the pile
runs down, the fabric has a shadowy
effect. Garments usually
show less wear if the pile runs
down.
For special effects, corduroy
may be cut with the ribs placed
horizontally. Rub your hand
along the ribbing to determine
the direction of the pile.
A simple design with few
seams is the best pattern choice
for corduroy. The pattern envelope
will indicate if the design
is suitable for a pile fabric. Yardage
is listed under "fabric with
nap."
