PETER SAMMARTINO SCHOOL OF EDUCATION Outreach and Partnerships The Institute for Math and Science joined SOE in June 2011 with Dr. Shane Smith as the Director. The Institute has been offering classes to elementary and middle school teachers in mathematics. SOE offered the first Summer Teaching Academy (STA), which introduced 17 high school seniors to the world of teaching and its responsibilities. Students participated in hands-on activities in math and science and taught a lesson to Camp Discovery students. Nine participants applied to FDU for this upcoming year. The second STA is planned for this upcoming summer, which will run for 2 weeks. An SOE Alumni Chapter has been formed and held its first event on April 25, 2012. In May 2012, SOE hosted a North Jersey Future Educators Association conference. High school students from around NJ participated. The Southeast Morris County Educational Consortium (SMEC) comprised of Hanover Township, East Hanover, Florham Park and Hanover Park Regional High School has been meeting regularly with SOE faculty. A mentoring workshop for 30 teachers was held on June 2011 at the Florham campus. SOE has been leading the New Jersey Teacher Assessment Collaborative (NJTAC). This group uses the same instrument, the CCI, to assess their student teachers. NJTAC is comprised of Caldwell College, Centenary College, St. Peters College, Bloomfield College, Rutgers University Trenton, Rider University, New Jersey City University, and St. Elizabeth College. NJTAC meets regularly on the FDU campus. The annual FDU/Record Conference for area school teachers was held on February 26, 2012. This year’s theme was “Assessing Our Students and Teachers: How Do We Measure Performance.” Approximately 150 teachers attended, and SOE faculty members M. Singer, J. Cowen, R. Wohle, S. Smith and D. Aronoff presented in break-out sessions. SOE has been working closely with the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise on a grant that the Institute received to incorporate sustainable topics into a school’s curriculum. SOE held 3, six-hour trainings at the Metro Campus, Florham Campus and at Gloucester Community College for all graduating SOE teaching candidates about strategies to curtail harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB). Such training is now required by NJ law. Eleven QUEST students were sent to the Wroxton campus this winter to do field placements in local English schools. SOE has partnerships with 7 schools in the area. The program is expanding to include Educational Leadership candidates and another school will join our partnership. 10 Now in its sixth year, the Educators Institute is a continuing partnership between SOE and the American Conference on Diversity. Two full-day professional development workshops were offered in December 2011 and March 2012 for educators on Bias and Bullying,
incorporating information regarding the new NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights as well as other information on salient research and classroom techniques. SOE was nominated for 3 awards in New Jersey’s Showcase for Higher Education hosted by the Commissioner of Higher Education, Rochelle Hendrix (April, 2012).
