Planned Property Management Actions for Brillion Wildlife Area in Calumet County Prescribed Burn Plant - grass/forbs Timber Harvest – see WisFIRS for more information Forest Lands,Grasslands & Prairies,Savannas & Barrens Agricultural Lands,Grasslands & Prairies Forest Lands areas- Brillion & Killsnake WA's. It is also utilized on Deschler Marsh and Holland WA. Plant - food plot Agricultural Lands These are often spread throughout the wildlife areas in small plots and next to grasslands, marsh and hunting. Farming is also a practice recommended by the DNR Board from past acquisitions on good quality farmland. These lands offer a variey of hunting opportunities for game species due to the grain and waste grain from machinery when harvested or for concealment or food for a variety of wildlife. On Holland WA it is used to keep woody invasions low and to maintain grasslands. For Deschler Marsh it is to prevent trees from invading. Burn Plans were approved on 3-09-2011 and expire on 12-31-14. Tracking #'s Brillion WA 082101-42011 for burn units 1-4, Killsnake WA for tracking # 083401- 32011 for burn units 1-3, Stockbridge Ledge Natural Area Tracking #, and Holland WA Tracking #. Seed maps of restoration areas. During 2013 several timber stands were maintained on the Brillion & Killsnake WA. On Killsnake the timber harvest was for an oak shelterwood harvest with a future planting of oak seedlings. On Brillion WA the forest was partially harvested near Irish Road for crop tree release of bottomland hardwoods. Logger ran into inclement weather and land conditions for timber harvest. Small aspen clearcuts were completed on the east side of Brillion WA to prevent the loss of stands since timber was not sold. At least 40 acres still exist and attempts will be made to find a logger. Otherwise harvest may take place with Fox Valley Technical College and local wildlife crews to cut and leave aspen to propagate it. These food plots are part of the Sharecrop Agreements or farmers Agreements. Still need to make sure farmers place these on the landscape or wildlife management marks sites for standing in the fall. Where brush or trees exist in fields that are not set back due to prescribed burns a follow up practice is to mow or cut trees & brush. Unwanted trees in grasslands are usually treated after cutting with a herbicide to prevent resprouting. Recreation & Facility Management Action Location Area/Length Comments Construct a new parking lot Approximately 15 new parking areas have been indicated for funding in 2013. These are in the preliminary stages for approval. Nine sites on Killsnake WA, five on Brilion WA and one in Outagamie County on a small property (Public land on Quarry Rd-former Paper Institute Land) for access points and safety prevention to keep people away from road traffic. Maintain Parking Area Each year parking areas deteriorate due to impacts by the public. These are repaired on a yearly basis as the need arises. Two sites have major things to complete on Brillion WA. These are slated to be refurbished with one on Conservation Road and the other off of Reimer Road. The Reimer Road parking lot was repaired in 2012 with a need to bring more gravel in 2013 to finish low areas and to smoothen out area of new culvert. The Conservation Road parking area needs more gravel to disperse across its surface to smoothen out small pockets or divets where water gathers. Establish or expand a boat access site If time permits and permission is granted through Water Regulations, boat landings are being looked at one place at Potter on the Manitowoc River for Brillion WA and at several sites on the Killsnake WA near the Manitowoc River off of Lemke Road and near the Killsnake River and Lemke Road. Cooperation from the Municipalities will be sought to bring to fruitition. Actual construction may not take place in 2013 but sometime in the future. Install or repair water control structure Two restorations need repair. One on Brillion WA near Bastian Road and one off of Aebischer Road on Killsnake WA. The Killsnake site needs to relocate the structure downward and reinforce area around control structure. The Brillion site Page 3 of 5
