Nomil~ations for inciusion in the series after that date cannot be accepted. Any such applications \\,ill necessafily be held over until the following series, many months ahead. Only registered shooters, of course, are eligible and all candidates lnust belong to an affiliated club. The series ~vill start on October 1 and candidates xvill be informed by circular and other information of what is required. One point to remember is that all questions on the examination paper must be answered, using one side of the paper only. In the preulous series several candidates used both sides of the paper for their ans\x7ers - this will not be acceptable in the forthcoming series. Questions are also required to be answered in full. A number of candidates in the last series were altogether too brief in their replies and gave the impression of trying to short circuit the question. This fault also will not be acceptable in the next series. Answers, approximately 18, must be con~pleted within the time limit allo\\~ed and also must be coinpleted before their home club President. or an official referee examiner as ap- pointed by the Association. These conditions !\,ill be rigidly adhered to. Interested clubs are informed that applications for permission to conduct 1956 Open Championships, that is Commonw%alth, State and -Distl.ict titles, close with the Secretary, A.C.P.T.S.A., Box 20389, G.P.O., Melbourne, C.1, 011 Septe~nber 30. Written applications only. Applications should be written quite apart fro~n genepal Association business for the reason that same are dealt wit11 by the Executive Committee during its October meeting. Which means that any correspo~~dence on the point of championships fol: 1956 should have reference to the subject matter mentioned only. If included anlong general matter to the Association application is lilrely to be missed. It is an Executive Commnittee direction that only clubs making application for titles mill be considered. In previous years titles have bee11 allocated, in some cases, where no application had been lodged. In future this will not be done. No application ineans no consideration \\,hen the 1956 Allocation comes up for discussion. The full 1956 Championship Allocation will be published in the 1955 issue of November "News". By the time this issue reaches readers the 1955 Annual Interstate Match mill be well under wav " in the ~~~ various States. Tasmania \~.ill lead off wit11 the holdi~~g of the Tasmanian section of the match at the Tasmanian Club's grounds at St. Leonards, just outside Launceston, on Septe~nber 3. Given fair conditions and normal shooting \\.eather, the match proinises to be most interesting and could be the nlost exciting sincs the start of the competition, \\rhich is actually State Tcan~ suprenlacy. All clubs conducting the contests should ensure that only registered shooters are permitted to take part. A shooter recently inentioiled tn the Association that a club, outside Victoria, conducts all its championships on the regulation automatic tmp, but that it then reverts to a plus trap for all club shooting. This action is indeed unusual and not the lcast to say peculiar. Why a club should use a plus trap in prelerence to an automatic is hard to understand. The automatic trap is the fairest means of releasing targets and should be used at all times in order to provide equity of competltion. Whilst a plus trap is a useful stand-by in case of emergency, its fiinctioiis are indecd limited when coinpared with the automatic releaser. Clubs are required, by Association direction, to use the auto- ~nntic trap in championships and majo~. events. -4 club has averred that a number of its n~elnbers maintained that club handicaps "are always 2 yards further back than Association marks". As an instance it was stated that a "shooter on 16 yards club handicap moves forward 2 yards mhen he colnpetes in an event which stipulates Association handicaps". There is 110 tie-up between club haridicaps and Association marks, although inany recomn~endatioiis are based on club performnnces, other than that they bear no relation whatever. Association handicaps are based on pel.formance, club recommendation and mhat is kno\r.n of the particular shooter concerned by the Association officials. Some clubs do not ca-operate fully with the Association in forn~arding results and recomn~endations, and this ineans that Association officials are cornpalled to take steps to handicap shooters as considered appropriate. ... When ~~~~~ such action is taken. the \\,hole matter is looked upon froin an Australia-wide inale as a u~hale and not just as the marks \\.auld apply to the particular club. Score sheets received from a club outside Victoria during the month just past revealed the sheets to be harl&d in a somewhat unus~~al and peculiar style. When a "kill" was gained by the shooter the score -~~~~ sheets ~~~~ ~ showed ~ the letter "I
