Each duplicate is placed in a double newspaper; if the material is bulky, place a second
newspaper the opposite way round. The duplicates can then be distributed to other herbaria.

When properly prepared and well cared for, mounted herbarium specimens should last
indefinitely. It is therefore very important to select mounting paper, adhesives and inks that
are of archival quality.
The two main aims of the mounting process are:
To display the specimens and data to allow maximum exposure of features
To preserve the specimen by securely attaching it to strong mounting paper, but at
the same time allowing for the removal of small portions for more detailed study
IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIMENS
Checklist of materials:
Binocular microscope (50x)
Lamp
Needles, forceps, preparation materials
Identification materials (Books: Floras, Journals etc; CD)
Before filing, specimens should be checked and the correct identity should be ascertained,
using identification keys in books or CD’s. With the help of the current collection one
should also compare the material with existing material of the same species to further check
if the correct scientific name has been applied.
