02 | CEE Fee Earners Conference – Winning With Clients
Welcome message
Welcome to Istanbul
“If the earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its
capital.” (Napoleon Bonaparte)
We are delighted to have over 200 DLA Piper
professionals at the first CEE Fee Earners Conference
in Istanbul on 8 and 9 July, 2011.
All fee earners from Austria, the Czech Republic,
Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia have been
invited together with colleagues from our still new Turkish
practice. We are also proud to have at this conference
senior representatives of such valued international client
organisations as Deutsche Telekom, ENI, HSBC, OMV,
Turkcell and Ülker/Yildiz Holding.
Why Istanbul? – you may ask. The reasons why are both
symbolic and pragmatic. The fast growing Turkish practice
represents DLA Piper at its best, emphasising the Firm’s
ambition to grow. Turkey is well known as a rapidly
developing country which has been traditionally a bridge
between Europe and the East. And, last but not least,
Istanbul offers a combination of cultural values and natural
beauty which will please you all.
What we want to achieve
“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you
have to play better than anyone else.” (Albert Einstein)
The meeting has been designed to enable all our lawyers,
whether junior associates or senior country managing
partners, to share experience in a relaxed yet professional
environment. The success of the conference will depend
on all of us: the more we share, the more we will learn and
take home with us.
What we would like to achieve is for all participants to
leave Istanbul with more insight into DLA Piper’s strategic
intent across the Firm, and in Central Eastern Europe
in particular. We can only hope that as well as a better
understanding of our common objectives, there will be
new ideas born and friendships made to make this a truly
memorable experience.
The conference programme reflects one of the principal
objectives of the new strategic framework that is being
introduced and implemented across the Firm: putting client
relationships on the top of our Agenda.
This, we believe, can be achieved best if we do more to
create interaction between practice groups, offices and
regions. DLA Piper is now the world’s largest law firm
with offices in more jurisdictions than any other, which
should help.
What we are going to do
“The best way to find out what our clients think of us and
of our competitors is by asking them.” (Anonymous)
The first day will offer an opportunity for all participants
to hear more of what DLA Piper has achieved already in
Central Eastern Europe and how we intend to build
on our current achievements going forward.
The client panel promises to be the excitement of the
day: the presence of senior legal counsel from prominent
client organisations at our plenary session demonstrates
the importance of putting clients first, and highlights the
continued need for us to do so in order to implement our
client strategy across practices and regions.
A partner presentation on client service excellence and best
practice in service delivery will conclude Day 1 before we
leave for dinner.
Saturday morning workshops will enable structured
discussions to reflect on what our clients said the previous
day. Working in groups, everyone will have an opportunity
to work with colleagues and develop ideas that we can
implement locally and across jurisdictions. The feedback
session will provide guidance on how we should follow up
on what has been discussed.
Dinner on a boat cruising down the Bosphorus will bring
the event to a conclusion on Saturday night.
We do hope you will all have a great time, and look
forward to meeting you in Istanbul.
Discover Istanbul...
Istanbul, one of the largest cities in the world, where Europe and Asia meet, a melting pot of
civilizations and cultures...
From the establishment of the Byzantine Empire in the
7th century BC to the dominance of the Ottoman Empire,
Istanbul has always played a significant role in the history of
humanity. Its ability to preserve its heritage while moving
into the future has drawn praise and admiration.
Geographically, the Bosphorus divides the city into Europe
and Asia, linked by two magnificent bridges that span the
continents.
Istanbul stands out with its historical and iconic attractions
such as the Golden Horn which divides Europe in two parts,
The Museum Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Palace of
Dolmabahçe and many more. As a reflection of its cultural
importance, the city was named the European Capital of
Culture in 2010 by the European Union.
In addition to its heritage and natural beauty, Istanbul offers
a colorful and wide range of flavors to satisfy even the most
demanding palate. Its excellent restaurants, original cuisine,
lively bars, and cosmopolitan feel add to a unique and
authentic experience for visitors.
Since the Turkish Republic was formed in 1923, Istanbul
has continued to grow from strength to strength. Today, it is
home to about 16 million people and has become one of the
most important centers of trade, tourism, urbanity, history
and culture.
What to See and Do In Istanbul?
Hagia Sophia Museum
Hagia Sophia was a Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later
a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Sultanahmet.
It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine
architecture with mosaics, marble pillars and coverings.
Dolmabahçe Palace
Dolmabahçe Palace served as the main administrative center
of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1922. It was also home
to six sultans from 1856, when it was first inhabited, up until
the abolition of the Caliphate in 1924.
Galata Tower
One of the most prominent landmarks in the city on the
European Side, it was built in 1348 in connection with
the first expansion of the Genoese Colony. The Tower was
used as a fire observation tower until the 1960s, and later
restored and converted to a tourist attraction.
Blue Mosque
A triumph of harmony, proportion and elegance, the Mosque
of Sultan Ahmet (known as the Blue Mosque) which was
built in 1616 after 7 years of construction, has six minarets
and its courtyard is the biggest of all of the Ottoman
mosques.
Grand Bazaar
With its 4,400 shops, 3,000 firms, 17 inns, and 64 streets,
Grand Bazaar has been a shopper’s Mecca since the mid-
15th century and is one of the largest covered markets in
the world.
Hippodrome Square (Sultanahmet Square)
Back in Byzantium days, an emperor’s fate hung on
the outcome of a chariot race. Races were held at the
Hippodrome between the rival ‘Greens’ and ‘Blues’.
The impressive granite Obelisk of Theodosius was carved
in Egypt around 1450 BC.
Topkapı Palace
Topkapı Palace was the administrative center of the
Ottoman Empire from 1465 to 1853. The Palace is located
on the Seraglio Point between the Golden Horn and the Sea
of Marmara and enjoys a splendid view of the Bosphorus.
Basilica Cistern
Basilica Cistern, with its 336 columns and a high, vaulted
ceiling, is an incredible Byzantine relic that was primarily
used to store water for the Great Palace and surrounding
buildings.
Istiklal Street
Beyoglu and the Istiklal Street are two popular places with
visitors of all ages. It is a pedestrian street approximately
3 to 4 km long, and lined with cozy cafés, restaurants,
shops, bookstores, movie theaters and music stores.
Nightlife
Istanbul offers a wide variety of places to relax after
enjoying the day’s activities.
