Welcome back to Mrs Gez Walter and Ms Janice Sampson who started back at
school this week. We have missed them at the school and we are very glad to
have them both back in action.
A wonderful morning tea was held on Tuesday to raise money for cancer
research. Thanks you to the many community members who attended as well
as all of the children who brought donations to join in the morning tea. Thank you to SRC for
their organisation on the day and to Ms Paget, Miss Buhler and Mrs Walter for ensuring the day
ran so successfully. Over $300 was raised for this very worthy cause, many people are touched by
this disease and it was wonderful for the Goroke school and extended community to be able to
contribute in this way. Later this year, together with the Lions Club, we will be participating in a
coin collection for the Kids for Cancer charity, so start saving those 5 cent pieces that really don’t
get used much any more.
This week our Advance students had the opportunity to assist at the Lions Club organised
Country and Western concert at the town hall. Students waited and cleared tables for the
luncheon and then helped clean and pack up the kitchen after lunch. As Principal, I was very
proud to watch our students work so well with the seniors community and I have received a
number of positive comments from the broader community. I received a letter today from Mrs
Dorothy Armstrong where she says, “These days often teenagers come under fire for their
behaviour but those kids did a sterling job. I am an ex-Karnak resident and so Goroke is my own
home town and those young people made me very proud so I wish them all the best in their
future.” Thank you Dorothy and the other community members who have provided such positive
feedback to the school.
This week is the last week for Mr Hager who goes on leave until the end of term 2. He will
be back in semester 2 after his journey outback to the northwest of Australia. We wish him all the
best for his break and many thanks to Mr Eric Jones, an experienced teacher formerly from
Horsham College, who will be taking his place whilst Mr Hager is away.
Well done to the primary students who travelled to the regional cross country on Tuesday.
Thanks to Mr Wearne who organised and accompanied them. They were up against some stiff
competition on the day but represented the school extremely well and ran their best. Good luck
to the secondary students who will be representing the school in the interschool competition
next week.
Years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to meet with the University of Ballarat
representatives this week. We have had longstanding connections with UB and their post
secondary support and advice, not just for aspiring university students but for school leavers in
general. It has provided some excellent information for both students and parents which would
be difficult to get otherwise in our remote rural area.
Today, all primary students are travelling to Edenhope to be part of an indigenous day at
St Malachy’s. Students will be involved in a range of activities and we wish them a great day.
Please don’t forget that June 7 th is a pupil free day for report writing. This is a great
opportunity to make any appointments, purchase shoes etc so that students don’t necessarily
miss out on school.
