Year 11 Systems Engineering Mechanical Build Progress Report
As Unit 1 draws to a close, the Year 11 students are frantically
working towards the completion of their construction of a
mechanical system.
The students chose to use a commercially available kit to build
a petrol powered bicycle, or in Matt case a tricycle.
Sean bought a new pushbike and had to modify the structure
of the frame to fit the 49cc engine. Sean then fitted his engine
and controls and was
soon running test laps
up and down the drive at
the school. A few
Sean teething troubles were
sorted, the machine now
starts reliably and will see service ferrying Sean to and from
his school based apprenticeship in Horsham.
Dylan sourced an old pushbike and repainted it in a
metallic green - great colour! The paint polished
beautifully and installation of the engine and ancillaries is
well under way.
Dylan
Matt had a dream of a 3 wheeler in the easy rider style and
has created a lightweight frame with a heavily raked front wheel to install his engine in. His
design still has a way to go, with problems such as the design of the clutch, accelerator and brake
controls still to be sorted. There are fears that
the handling may prove to be similar to the
Matt
Reliant Robin, the three wheeled car that
regularly starred in the Mr Bean Series. The
Reliant Robin managed to fall over at every
appearance. Time will tell. In the meantime, a
lot of enjoyable learning goes on as this beast
is designed and built.
Mr Smith

Yesterday we were notified that 2 of our students have been accepted into the John
Monash Science Exchange Programme for term 3. This is an excellent opportunity for
students to attend a Specialist Science school in Melbourne for 5 weeks at the start of term
3 as well as follow up back here at school with projects that will continue throughout the
term. The programme culminates in a final week in term 4. Only 20 students have been
selected from the Grampians region (from Ballarat to the SA border) and 2 of them are
from our school so well done to Grady and Maddie. We look forward to hearing from them
when they return.
Our Primary students were able to compete in their regional cross country finals
yesterday and competed very well with improving times. Thanks to Mr Wearne for
organising the trip across to Dimboola.
Thank you to Mrs Colley and Mrs Charlton for organising the Tutankhamun
excursion to Melbourne for the secondary students. These are often once in a lifetime
opportunities for our students and are a valuable addition to the curriculum being taught
in the school. Thanks also to Sue and Phil Walker for helping accompany the students on
the long journey to Melbourne. Next week our Police Youth Corps students travel to Halls
Gap for 2 days as part of their Advance training.
A reminder to Bogong students that if they would like to begin paying off their trip
they are welcome to make payments at any time. Students will not be permitted to attend
Bogong unless full payment or payment arrangements have been made prior to the camp.
The camp is the third week of next term. Mr Smith and Mrs Rich will be accompanying the
students on this camp.
At our last School Council meeting, our religious education programme was briefly
discussed – not for any of the sensationalist reasons that have been in the media lately but
purely because we are having difficulty trying to fit all of our compulsory curriculum into
the hours we have here at school. With the addition of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen
Garden Project, we are struggling to ensure that our primary students can be involved in
all of the valuable programmes we have running at the school and are part of the
compulsory state curriculum. Currently RE is run for 1 lesson a week at Grades Prep to 4
and our Chaplain is involved in a values based programme at Grade 5/6 (no longer a
formal RE programme). I am asking for staff, parent and student feedback on this issue to
take to School Council to ensure that we have a broad base of opinion before we
eventually make a decision to either retain or replace RE in our primary school.
Currently our Health programme overlaps with many of the values / moral based
topics covered in the RE programme. The RE programme covers specific Bible stories and
information about God and Jesus that is not covered anywhere else in the school
curriculum. In this week‟s newsletter, I have included a reply slip that I would like as many
parents as possible to return to the school so we can make an informed judgement about
parent opinion on RE. In this slip I have mentioned the possibility of the use of school
facilities to offer optional lunchtime or after school RE activities if RE teachers were
available. Please complete the form and return to the school prior to the School Council
meeting in 3 weeks. It is important that parents feed back to us on this issue.
It‟s amazing how much
life can change in such a
short space of time. Six
months ago I wouldn‟t
have been able to even
describe how to march
effectively, and now it‟s
second nature. After five
weeks of a Sergeant
yelling in your ear 24
hours a day, suddenly
you learn to complete
everything “abnormally
quick, at a high
standard”, as he would
put it.
When having even the
slightest crease in the
wrong part of your
trousers will earn you a visit to the Sergeant when you finally have free time. Or wearing a
watch during physical training will earn push-ups, for everyone, you soon learn to look out for
poor dress standards.
Even though what I‟ve described doesn‟t sound very pleasant, I have loved almost every
minute of it. My experience is extremely different from most that enter the Defence Force.
Most go straight into their role after basic training, I have four years of study to complete
before-hand, and hence my initial training is nowhere near as severe as those going “direct
entry.” My time will come at Duntroon Royal Military College (Officer Training) in two and a
half years.
After the initial six weeks is completed, the highest priority for me is my Civil Engineering
degree, with 12 hours of military study assigned each week, and two hours of drill (marching).
I still have time for extra-curricular activities, including marathon and distance running
(MADR), football and mixed-netball as my choices. It‟s been a life-changing experience, and
one I would recommend to anyone considering it. I have met so many like-minded people,
and one‟s who will be some of my best friends for life, just don‟t go into it half-hearted, it‟s a
big commitment if you don‟t truly desire it, and a worthy sacrifice if you do.
We have been having fun here at the
Snowy River Campus. Some days have been
better than others but we are all having a
good time. We have already tried surfing,
expo, canoeing and a bush dance.
We have been working on our CLP
(Community Learning Project) well and
have gained a lot of progress. We hope to
have a dance earning money for the
McGrath Foundation. So far at SRC we have
gained more friendships and we are having
a great time.
