Breeding Everything for the breed Almost ten years ago Susanne and Jochen Schrader had to choose between a boarding facility with school-horses or a breeding facility: Their Hanoverian heart made the decision! By Julia Martin The house is more than 100 years old. The huge, silver-grey home arises in front of the visitor once he/she steps on the premises of Susanne and Jochen Schrader in Königslutter. The house is made of a certain type of stone from the Helmstedt/ Wolfenbüttel region. Mr. and Mrs. Schade welcome guests with heartfelt sincerity. The grandfather laid the foundation Fritz Jesse came from Anklam in Western Pomerania as a refugee and acquired the farm from Family Schrader during the post-war period. Finally daughter Margot Jesse married Karl-August Schrader. He was an athletic teacher and had no equestrian gene in him. It simply must have jumped a generation: Grandfather Fritz Jesse worked as a livestock and horse dealer. Horses had always been part of the farm’s inventory. Jochen Schrader and his three brothers enjoyed spending every free minute with their grandfather. They rode ponies at a young age and later on horses. Horses and riding became more than only a passion to Jochen Schrader; he was born in 1965. They became a crucial part of his life. He laid the foundation for this development from 1982 until 1985 when he studied equine management with an emphasis on breeding and raising of horses at the State Stud Celle and added studying equine management with the emphasis on riding at the State Riding and Driving School in Vechta. He successfully completed the exam to become a licensed trainer for the handicapped in 1991. Jochen Schrader was a riding instructor at the facility of his grandfather in Königslutter and at the Riding Club in Braunschweig after his training. His Grandfathers facility offered 18 box stalls and an outdoor riding ring. He gave lessons and trained with Frank Uhde on the side in Braunschweig. Photos: Martin greatly enjoyed teaching and therapeutic riding. Both were very important to me,” Jochen Schrader explains. His profession provided for an additional fundamental change. He met his future wife Susanne who has loved horses since her youth. Jochen Schrader put the final touches on his wife’s riding skills. Horses create very special connections! They got married in 1995. Susanne Schrader is a trained industrial businesswoman and a system analyst. She works in a marketing management institute and attends to projects for new employees at the Volkswagen plant. “I ride one or two horses when I return home from work at night,” the 48-year old reports with a smile on her face. Fritz Jesse died in 1995 and the couple had to make the decision whether to keep the inherited property or sell the farm and build a new home. “I could not part with the farm,” Jochen Schrader explains. “I have always been very much at home here and love it. I have so many memories here. So we decided to reorganize and restructure.” The buildings were completely renovated. We gave up the school horses and the therapeutic riding program in 2005. The reason for the change could not have been a better one: Schraders wanted to focus solely on breeding Hanoverians. They had a small breeding program in place. Fritz Jesse had laid the foundation for it with the mare Wienerin. “We had no indoor arena and the riding lessons had to be cancelled all too often during the winter months. We had to make up our minds to either invest in an indoor arena and in school horses or in an extensive breeding program.” 16 The Hanoverian 07|2013
Fritz Jesse bred Wienerin by Walzertraum/Julius Caesar xx. His grandson inherited a very valuable mare. She delivered 14 foals. Her descendants are of excellent quality and do very well in various disciplines. Wienerin was bred to Dream of Glory six times. Her son Duvall who was born 1997 developed into a first-rate athlete. Jochen Schrader’s brother Klaus has collected blue ribbons with the stallion at the Grand Prix-level. The pair successfully participated in the Lower Saxony Championships and in World Cup-qualifications several times. The powerful stallion retired from competition this year. “Duvall was always so well-behaved. My 13-year old nephew Paul competed him in dressage classes at the E- and A-level last year. That is certainly not the norm,” Susanne Schrader raves. Full-sister Distelbluete received the Ia-award several times and is a state’s premium mare. The typy dark bay has earned her keep as a proven broodmare in the barn of Family Schrader by far: She has delivered seven foals; four of which have sold through Verden’s auction program. Her approved son by Weltmeyer called What a Dream competes in dressage at the S-level under Katrin Alkenings and Anke Bergmann. Daughter Fleur by Florencio successfully competes in dressage at the M-level. Full-sister Francis participated in Verden’s auction program and now competes under the name For my dream under rider Katrin Alkenings. Daughter Wunschkind by Worldly completed her mare performance test as one of the best in dressage and is now stabled in Königslutter. Her son Little Big Man is currently a member of Verden’s summer auction. Wienerin was the dam of the winning family at the mare show in Königslutter in 2003 with daughter Distelbluete and fullsister Dana. Winston Churchill by Worldly is another S-level dressage competitor out of the foundation mare. Anja Hermelink collects ribbons with him in the dressage ring. The mare Ferrera by Fabriano/Deichvogt is another pillar of the Family Schrader breeding program. She was acquired as a two-year old. “Ferrera is bottle-fed and a bit different in her behavior. She does not grant you space but all her offspring have wonderful dispositions and convince with excellent rideability,” Susanne Schrader explains. Her daughter Mabel by Muenchhausen was one of Verden’s top-selling horses of the November auction in 2006 and her son Campari by Cordoba both support Susanne Schrader’s explanation impressively. Campari sold on Verden’s summer auction in 2007 and participated in the German Junior Rider Championships in 2011. Chanel by Certus/Wittelsbach (breeder: Heinrich Eylmann) was one of Schrader’s foundation mares for many years. Bred to Fabriano she delivered the approved sire Ferruccio who successfully competes in S-level jumper classes under rider Anne Oberle. The broodmares of business partner Sven Frohreich are also stabled on the farm. About seven foals are born in Königslutter every year. Jochen and Susanne Schraders breeding program has a good reputation: 27 Hanoverians have found new homes through Verden’s auction program. Ten hectares of fields that are located outside the farm are part of the business. The indoor riding arena at the neighboring riding club is in walking distance. The youngsters grow up in open-stables in Rieseberg that is a few kilometers away. “We trailer horses or walk foals at the road side,” so Susanne Schrader. “It guarantees that our horses are wellbehaved and reliable; most recreational riders appreciate this.” The rideability of the dams is just as important. “We ride every mare before they enter our breeding program.” Jochen Schrader attends to the training of the young horses. Most horses are sold after they have been broken to saddle. Schrader enjoys working with training facilities like that of auction rider Sascha Böhnke, “They often add the finishing touches to the training.” Jochen Schrader no longer rides. The reason is Loriot by Lemon Park xx who was trained by Jochen Schrader and sold on one of Verden’s auctions. “I sold my heart when I sold him. He was very special.” The Schrader stry not to be discouraged too much by the current difficult market situation. Susanne Schrader is confident, “We have to find creative solutions. It is essential to be in the limelight today. You have to make personal contact.
