Corbett: Horse Racing Will Be Fine
By Bill Finley
During a wide-reaching interview taped Tuesday with
Denny Logan on WNNK-FM in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania
Governor Tom Corbett defended his attempts to strip the
Race Horse Development Fund of $72 million.
Logan, a thoroughbred
enthusiast
and owner,
argued that
should the
money be taken
from purses it
will have a devastating
effect on
racing in the
Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett says racing has
nothing to worry about
state, but
Corbett attempted
to paint
the possible raiding
of the fund as only a minor problem for the racing industry.
He said that, even with the $72 million gone, there would
be an “abundant” amount of money left for purses. Logan
said the word “abundant” was a “mischaracterization of
reality” and predicted that several Pennsylvania racetracks
would close should the governor get away with his plan.
“They will be able to survive,” Corbett said.
The governor went on to claim that the $72 million annual
hit would not be permanent.
“We basically subsidize the race horse industry by creating
that fund in the first place,” Corbett said. “I have friends
in the horse race industry that are upset with me and I told
them that in my opinion this is a very short term issue.”
At another point in the interview, Corbett said: “This is a
short term fix. We don't want to do this long term but we
have to get through the next two or three years.”
Logan said no one was going to believe that the $72
million would some day go back into the race horse fund.
“I understand that, but we are not faced with great
choices,” Corbett responded.
Corbett went on to claim his plan would actually benefit
racing to some extent because the $72 million is being
earmarked for county fairs and the University of Pennsylvania’s
veterinary programs.
“They get a fair amount of money,” Corbett said of the
state’s racing industry. That (the $72 million) is a chunk. But
there will be a lot of money left over. We need some money
and we're putting it into the fairs of Pennsylvania, which is
an integral part of Pennsylvania culture, especially in the
rural areas. The fairs do a lot with horses; there's a lot of
racing there, sulky racing. The Penn vet program that the
state has always funded, that helps agriculture, but it also
helps the horse racing industry because an equine facility is
there.”
“I don’t see how this fixes anything,” Logan countered.
“This is going to break the horse racing industry. I can
appreciate you saying you want to fund county fairs and
other agricultural issues and horse racing is part of the
Department of Agriculture. But that department is funded
by the budget and the horse racing fund is not funded from
the budget. I don’t see the logic. This is like taking money
from girl scout cookie sales and using it to fix pot holes
and then arguing that since girl scouts use roads they
should help repair them. The horse racing fund is a result
of a partnership with the gaming industry. It’s not a government
subsidy.”
Logan said the debate continued off the air.
“I told him off the air that other than a ski mask and a
weapon I saw no difference between taking from the horse
fund and a robbery,” the radio host said. “He said I was
more politically informed than he expected and I assured
him I'm not some uninformed pinhead or kiss ass like you
typically meet on these local radio shows. I told him I didn't
vote for him but I respected his candor and political courage
to make choices that are basically pissing everyone
off. I asked that he please objectively reconsider his position
on this horse issue and I said I would objectively
reconsider my position on the issues important to him. He
said ‘fair enough,’ shook my hand and left.”

Put On A Show Ready To Do Just That?
By Bill Finley
Richard Young has been waiting for this moment for more
than 15 months, which was the last time his sensational
mare Put On A Show (Rocknroll Hanover) raced. She
returns tonight in the first leg of the Overbid Series at the
Meadowlands, which came up brutally tough for a mere
$40,000 race, and the mare’s co-owner says she will be
better than ever. Eventually, that it is.
“She’s suggesting
to us that
she’s going to
even better than
before,” Young
said. “She’s
sounder. When
she raced at
three, she was a
horse whose knee
Put On A Show...the champ is back
(New Image Media photo)
was deteriorating.
At times, she
would cross the
wire a little gimpy. The vet indicated to us that this was an
injury that was deteriorating over time and finally broke off.
The driver, Brian Sears, is telling us that she’s come back
straighter and sounder. She’s considerably bigger and she’s
shown flashes of speed just as she had before. So we’ve
got something bigger, stronger, sounder.”
Put On A Show wrapped up a Dan Patch Award when
capturing her Breeders Crown event in 2009 before ending
her season with a second place finish in the American
Nationals at Balmoral. But a knee problem had flared up to
the point where she needed surgery.
With Put On A Show having already accomplished so
much, most owners would have retired her at that point and
bred her. But Young, who owns the mare along with his wife
Joanne and Craig Henderson, has never been much for the
breeding business.
“I’ve never bred a horse in my life and to breed her would
have meant changing my whole philosophy,” he said. “I was
told by the vet that, once she had time to heal, she was
likely to come back as good or better than ever. I like to
race horses, this is a great horse and I like to watch her
race.”
Trainer Chris Ryder brought Put On A Show along patiently
and had her ready for qualifiers at the Meadowlands
last month. She won two straight qualifiers, setting her up
for Friday’s race.
But Young will go into it with modest expectations. He
understands that any horse–even Put On A Show–leaving
from the ten post after being off 15-plus months is up
against it.
“We don’t care too much about this first race,” he said.
“We all want to win, but she drew the ten post against a
really tough bunch. I can’t see the driver saying, ‘we have
a great horse here, we’ve been off 16 months, we’ll go
right to the front.’ And if he does I’ll shoot him. What do I
see? Parked the mile, out five wide top of the stretch, pass
a few horses and finish fourth. That won’t bother me. She
can fly. But we’ve got to get he race-ready, not qualifyready.”
Ryder agrees.
I'm really happy with her; it doesn't seem like she's lost
her edge at all,” he said. “I think the biggest obstacle now
is getting her seasoned, but she'll overcome that."
Young believes Put On A Show should be ready for her
best about the time the Overbid Final rolls around. After
that, he’ll consider racing her against males, another sign
of his confidence. He said that if she is successful over the
next several weeks he will consider the Graduate and the
Ben Franklin.
“I’m very serious about that,” he said. “But I’m not going
to do it if she can’t beat the other mares.”
With a career record of 19 for 25 and earnings of
$1,883,475, Put On A Show is the richest horse in the
race, but she’s far from the only quality mare in the field.
The Overbid will also mark the 2012 debut of 2011 Dan
Patch Award winner Anndrovette (Riverboat King), who is
also coming off two winning qualifiers at the Meadowlands.
Chancey Lady (Camluck), second in last year’s
Breeders Crown, is also making her seasonal debut, and
Ron Burke will take aim at first prize with the three-horse
entry of Rock N Soul (Rocknroll Hanover), Ginger And
Fred (Real Artist) and Rocklamation (Rocknroll Hanover).

See You At Peelers Wins Qualifier in 1:56.3
Thursday, March 01, 2012 - by Ken Weingartner, Harness
Racing Communications
Freehold, NJ --- Two-time Dan Patch Award winner See
You At Peelers (Bettor’s Delight) returned to the racetrack
for the first time in four months and won a qualifier at the
Meadowlands in 1:56.3 Thursday morning.
Brian Sears drove the Jimmy Takter-trained pacing mare
over a track labeled "sloppy" on a chilly 37-degree morning
in northern New Jersey. See You At Peelers, who won the
first 22 races of her career and has earned $1.49 million in
25 lifetime starts, last competed on October 22 in a Breeders
Crown elimination. She finished seventh.
Bred by Christina
Takter, who owns the
4-year-old mare with
brothers John and
Jim Fielding, See
You At Peelers was
hampered by a virus
that caused heart and
lung issues toward
See You At Peelers qualified at the
Meadowlands Thursday
the end of her 2011
campaign.
In the qualifier, See
You At Peelers was third for much of the way before coming
home with a :28 second final quarter-mile and edging
Myluvmylife (Rocknroll Hanover) by a neck.
“It was not a fast qualifier, but she did it very nice,” Jimmy
Takter said. “I was very happy with her and so was Brian.
The track was very sloppy, but when he tipped her out over
the last eighth (of a mile) she came home very nice. We’ll
see if we can shake a little more speed out of her.”
Takter, who said he has trained See You At Peelers in
1:53.3, will qualify her at least one more time before returning
to action, most likely in the Blue Chip Matchmaker
Series at Yonkers Raceway. The series begins March 23.
“So far, so good,” Takter said. “We’ll qualify at least one
more time and then go from there. When she’s got to go
under (1):50, that’s when I’ll know if we’ve got the real deal
or not.”
See You At Peelers won all 13 of her starts as a
2-year-old and was named the Dan Patch Award winner as
the best filly in her age group. Last season, she won nine of
12 races and again captured divisional honors. Her 22-race
win streak was harness racing’s fourth longest in the U.S.
over the last 20 years and done against primarily stakes
competition.
VIP Stable To Start First Thoroughbred Runner
Today
By Lucas Marquardt
VIP Stable, one of harness racing’s top syndicates, has
branched out into thoroughbred racing and will start its first
runner today when the Gary Contessa-trained Crown The
Chief runs in the third race at Aqueduct. The six-furlong
event is a starter handicap with a $55,000 purse.
Like many, VIP was attracted
to the thoroughbred game and
New York because of the skyrocketing
purses at the NYRA
tracks. With business booming
at the Aqueduct casino, NYRA
recently announced that there
Gary Contessa will train
VIP’s thoroughbred
string
will be a 44 percent purse increase
at the upcoming
Belmont spring meet.
“This is a horse we claimed
for $30,000 a few weeks back,
and he is racing for an amazing $55,000 purse - just about
enough to pay back his claiming price if he wins,” VIP
Founder and Managing Partner Ed O’Connor said. “As
New York racing moves to Belmont in the spring and then
Saratoga this summer, the purses will reach amazing
levels Purses at Belmont will average $620,000 per day
and at Saratoga, they will average $930,000 per day. Can
you imagine racing in a maiden race at Saratoga for an
$85,000 purse! Or in an Allowance race for a purse of
$87,000.! Even low level claimers will race for big bucks,
with $12,500 claimers going for a $43,000 purse and
$25,000 claimers for $55,000. Holy cow.”
O’Connor said that Crown the Chief is the stable’s only
thoroughbred, but he plans to add several more in the
coming weeks.
O’Connor said that there are no plans to cut back on
VIP’s standardbred operation.

tougher. KENTUCKY REBEL will be tested early and
FLOAT BLUE CHIP will be closing.
By Brett Sturman
Race 6, Overbid
The FFA mare division gets a new look tonight as a number
of the mares that we’ll see throughout the summer and later
into the year make their seasonal debut. TEA PARTY
PRINCESS already won the Open at Woodbine last out in
her first start of the year and will likely be showing speed
again. Won half her starts last year at three, and may offer
some additional value being the only Burke horse in here
not part of the entry. PUT ON A SHOW makes her first
start in a year and a half and lands post 10. I’d imagine a
very conservative effort coming, but will be one to watch.
ANNDROVETTE was the sport’s older mare of the year in
2011, and that Breeders Crown win was dominant. Has two
qualifiers under her belt, could be ready to go right now.
HIGHER AND HIGHER lost to the tripped out SYMPHONY
IN MOTION in the Cape & Cutter final, gets tested even
further.
Race 7, Fillies & Mares N/W $10,000 L5
BLING had too far to come last week in her drop to this
level, but it was a race she probably should have been in a
better position to begin with. That 1/27 race from Yonkers
would be more than good enough; still deserves to be
favored. WHATS NEW PUSSYCAT took her tour of the
track last week but now lands post 10 with two of the main
contenders immediately to her inside. Qualified second to
Put On A Show two back. CLASSIERIVERBOAT N
brushed to the lead into the stretch last out but ran out of
steam a little bit late. That was over a sloppy track, I can
give one more chance from the rail. I went against RUN
ON LUCK last week when she had the rail and got burned;
let’s see if she can do it again but this time from out here.
Speed will be coming.
Race 8, Rags To Riches
LAGUNA BEACH had his winning streak derailed last week,
but it took heavy pressure throughout and a :53:4 half mile
to do him in. He still hung in there pretty well despite it, and
his race last week went in 1:51:1, by far the fastest division.
ALASTAIR HANOVER rebounded after faltering two back
when heavily backed. That 30K claiming line from three
back and the rail tonight are intimidating. ROCKIN GLASS
showed sharp pace on both ends of the mile two back and
then took them wire to wire last out; this field is a bit
Race 9, N/W $10,000 L5
TSMLIL ORPHAN ANDY nearly overcame a wide trip and
stalled cover over that sloppy track last Friday to just miss
against the pocket sitting winner Tigers Too Good. Was a
very strong second to In Focus two back and does have a
big class edge over most of these. One more chance.
FOUR STARZ CREDIT looked like a winner last out midway
through the stretch but was caught by a very sharp
looking rival. He’ll be going right to the front again and
another 1:54 type mile could very well get the job done
this time. UP FRONT BEN has been here before, and
now makes his debut for Julie Miller. I wouldn’t be at all
surprised with an improved effort. WHYBABYWHY makes
her second start back; could be closing at a long price.
Will It Be Paradise City For Guns An Roses In
Cam Fella
By Greg Gangle
TORONTO, March 2 - Guns An Roses, who carries a
two-race win streak, will be a top contender in the second
leg of the $40,000 Cam Fella Pacing Series, set for Saturday
evening at Woodbine.
The four-year-old son of Life Sign-Best Lady captured his
first division in 1:51.3 for co-owner/breeder Joanne Colville,
who co-owns with her daughter, Emma Christoforou, while
Colville’s father, Frank, handles the training.
Colville's decision to nominate Gun An Roses to the Cam
Fella Pacing Series came after the brown gelding, who
earned $99,170 last season, scored his lifetime best mark.
“We weren’t sure if he was going to be able to go with
these types of horses, but we decided to give him a shot,
especially after he took his 1:50.3 record in the Grassroots
Semi-final. He’s proven himself,” Colville said.
Colville’s High Stakes Inc. bred has amassed $141,220 in
career earnings to date.
“He’s the type of horse that races better when he’s in the
mix of things. That’s when you get the best performance out
of him,” Colville noted. “He’s starting to show some of his
mother's back-class (Best Lady p,1:51.4 - $276,915).”
Colville also believes that giving Guns An Roses the
appropriate time off in the fall was instrumental to the
recent success he’s enjoyed, namely earnings of $42,050
from just six starts (three wins) in 2012.
“That was the best thing
we could have done for
him,” Colville said. “He
really matured, filled out
and grew into himself.
He’s just a nice-sized
horse and it looks like we
did everything right to
Guns An Roses (New Image
bring him back in the right
form. So far, it’s paying off
and hopefully that continues.”
When Guns An Roses begins from post one in the second
of two divisions Saturday night, Colville will hand the
lines to fiancée, driver Jack Moiseyev.
“Jack seems to get along well with him,” Colville said. “I
know he thought quite a bit of him when he took his lifetime
best and it looks like that’s continued. If not, we’ll
have to make a driver change,” she said with a laugh.
The Cam Fella Pacing Series is for four and
five-year-old pacers in 2012, who are non-winners of
$150,000 lifetime as of midnight December 31, 2011. The
$100,000 final is scheduled for Saturday, March 10.
