During a wide-reaching interview taped Tuesday with<br />

Denny Logan on WNNK-FM in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania<br />

Governor Tom <strong>Corbett</strong> defended his attempts to strip the<br />

Race <strong>Horse</strong> Development Fund of $72 million.<br />

nothing to worry about<br />

<strong>Corbett</strong> attempted<br />

to paint<br />

the possible raiding<br />

of the fund as only a minor problem for the racing industry.<br />

He said that, even with the $72 million gone, there would<br />

be an “abundant” amount of money left for purses. Logan<br />

said the word “abundant” was a “mischaracterization of<br />

reality” and predicted that several Pennsylvania racetracks<br />

would close should the governor get away with his plan.<br />

“They will be able to survive,” <strong>Corbett</strong> said.<br />

The governor went on to claim that the $72 million annual<br />

hit would not be permanent.<br />

“We basically subsidize the race horse industry by creating<br />

that fund in the first place,” <strong>Corbett</strong> said. “I have friends<br />

in the horse race industry that are upset with me and I told<br />

them that in my opinion this is a very short term issue.”<br />

At another point in the interview, <strong>Corbett</strong> said: “This is a<br />

short term fix. We don't want to do this long term but we<br />

have to get through the next two or three years.”<br />

Logan said no one was going to believe that the $72<br />

million would some day go back into the race horse fund.<br />

“I understand that, but we are not faced with great<br />

choices,” <strong>Corbett</strong> responded.<br />

<strong>Corbett</strong> went on to claim his plan would actually benefit<br />

racing to some extent because the $72 million is being<br />

earmarked for county fairs and the University of Pennsylvania’s<br />

veterinary programs.<br />

“They get a fair amount of money,” <strong>Corbett</strong> said of the<br />

state’s racing industry. That (the $72 million) is a chunk. But<br />

there will be a lot of money left over. We need some money<br />

and we're putting it into the fairs of Pennsylvania, which is<br />

an integral part of Pennsylvania culture, especially in the<br />

rural areas. The fairs do a lot with horses; there's a lot of<br />

racing there, sulky racing. The Penn vet program that the<br />

state has always funded, that helps agriculture, but it also<br />

helps the horse racing industry because an equine facility is<br />

there.”<br />

“I don’t see how this fixes anything,” Logan countered.<br />

“This is going to break the horse racing industry. I can<br />

appreciate you saying you want to fund county fairs and<br />

other agricultural issues and horse racing is part of the<br />

Department of Agriculture. But that department is funded<br />

by the budget and the horse racing fund is not funded from<br />

the budget. I don’t see the logic. This is like taking money<br />

from girl scout cookie sales and using it to fix pot holes<br />

and then arguing that since girl scouts use roads they<br />

should help repair them. The horse racing fund is a result<br />

of a partnership with the gaming industry. It’s not a government<br />

subsidy.”<br />

Logan said the debate continued off the air.<br />

“I told him off the air that other than a ski mask and a<br />

weapon I saw no difference between taking from the horse<br />

fund and a robbery,” the radio host said. “He said I was<br />

more politically informed than he expected and I assured<br />

him I'm not some uninformed pinhead or kiss ass like you<br />

typically meet on these local radio shows. I told him I didn't<br />

vote for him but I respected his candor and political courage<br />

to make choices that are basically pissing everyone<br />

off. I asked that he please objectively reconsider his position<br />

on this horse issue and I said I would objectively<br />

reconsider my position on the issues important to him. He<br />

said ‘fair enough,’ shook my hand and left.”

Put On A Show Ready To Do Just That?<br />

Richard Young has been waiting for this moment for more<br />

than 15 months, which was the last time his sensational<br />

mare Put On A Show (Rocknroll Hanover) raced. She<br />

returns tonight in the first leg of the Overbid Series at the<br />

Meadowlands, which came up brutally tough for a mere<br />

$40,000 race, and the mare’s co-owner says she will be<br />

better than ever. Eventually, that it is.<br />

“She’s suggesting<br />

was deteriorating.<br />

At times, she<br />

would cross the<br />

wire a little gimpy. The vet indicated to us that this was an<br />

injury that was deteriorating over time and finally broke off.<br />

The driver, Brian Sears, is telling us that she’s come back<br />

straighter and sounder. She’s considerably bigger and she’s<br />

shown flashes of speed just as she had before. So we’ve<br />

got something bigger, stronger, sounder.”<br />

Put On A Show wrapped up a Dan Patch Award when<br />

capturing her Breeders Crown event in 2009 before ending<br />

her season with a second place finish in the American<br />

Nationals at Balmoral. But a knee problem had flared up to<br />

the point where she needed surgery.<br />

With Put On A Show having already accomplished so<br />

much, most owners would have retired her at that point and<br />

bred her. But Young, who owns the mare along with his wife<br />

Joanne and Craig Henderson, has never been much for the<br />

breeding business.<br />

“I’ve never bred a horse in my life and to breed her would<br />

have meant changing my whole philosophy,” he said. “I was<br />

told by the vet that, once she had time to heal, she was<br />

likely to come back as good or better than ever. I like to<br />

race horses, this is a great horse and I like to watch her<br />

race.”<br />

Trainer Chris Ryder brought Put On A Show along patiently<br />

and had her ready for qualifiers at the Meadowlands<br />

last month. She won two straight qualifiers, setting her up<br />

for <strong>Friday</strong>’s race.<br />

But Young will go into it with modest expectations. He<br />

understands that any horse–even Put On A Show–leaving<br />

from the ten post after being off 15-plus months is up<br />

against it.<br />

“We don’t care too much about this first race,” he said.<br />

“We all want to win, but she drew the ten post against a<br />

really tough bunch. I can’t see the driver saying, ‘we have<br />

a great horse here, we’ve been off 16 months, we’ll go<br />

right to the front.’ And if he does I’ll shoot him. What do I<br />

see? Parked the mile, out five wide top of the stretch, pass<br />

a few horses and finish fourth. That won’t bother me. She<br />

can fly. But we’ve got to get he race-ready, not qualifyready.”<br />

Ryder agrees.<br />

I'm really happy with her; it doesn't seem like she's lost<br />

her edge at all,” he said. “I think the biggest obstacle now<br />

is getting her seasoned, but she'll overcome that."<br />

Young believes Put On A Show should be ready for her<br />

best about the time the Overbid Final rolls around. After<br />

that, he’ll consider racing her against males, another sign<br />

of his confidence. He said that if she is successful over the<br />

next several weeks he will consider the Graduate and the<br />

<strong>Be</strong>n Franklin.<br />

“I’m very serious about that,” he said. “But I’m not going<br />

to do it if she can’t beat the other mares.”<br />

With a career record of 19 for 25 and earnings of<br />

$1,883,475, Put On A Show is the richest horse in the<br />

race, but she’s far from the only quality mare in the field.<br />

The Overbid will also mark the <strong>2012</strong> debut of 2011 Dan<br />

Patch Award winner Anndrovette (Riverboat King), who is<br />

also coming off two winning qualifiers at the Meadowlands.<br />

Chancey Lady (Camluck), second in last year’s<br />

Breeders Crown, is also making her seasonal debut, and<br />

Ron Burke will take aim at first prize with the three-horse<br />

entry of Rock N Soul (Rocknroll Hanover), Ginger And<br />

Fred (Real Artist) and Rocklamation (Rocknroll Hanover).

Freehold, NJ --- Two-time Dan Patch Award winner See<br />

You At Peelers (<strong>Be</strong>ttor’s Delight) returned to the racetrack<br />

for the first time in four months and won a qualifier at the<br />

Meadowlands in 1:56.3 Thursday morning.<br />

Brian Sears drove the Jimmy Takter-trained pacing mare<br />

over a track labeled "sloppy" on a chilly 37-degree morning<br />

in northern New Jersey. See You At Peelers, who won the<br />

first 22 races of her career and has earned $1.49 million in<br />

25 lifetime starts, last competed on October 22 in a Breeders<br />

Crown elimination. She finished seventh.<br />

In the qualifier, See<br />

You At Peelers was third for much of the way before coming<br />

home with a :28 second final quarter-mile and edging<br />

Myluvmylife (Rocknroll Hanover) by a neck.<br />

“It was not a fast qualifier, but she did it very nice,” Jimmy<br />

Takter said. “I was very happy with her and so was Brian.<br />

The track was very sloppy, but when he tipped her out over<br />

the last eighth (of a mile) she came home very nice. We’ll<br />

see if we can shake a little more speed out of her.”<br />

Takter, who said he has trained See You At Peelers in<br />

1:53.3, will qualify her at least one more time before returning<br />

to action, most likely in the Blue Chip Matchmaker<br />

Series at Yonkers Raceway. The series begins <strong>Mar</strong>ch 23.<br />

“So far, so good,” Takter said. “We’ll qualify at least one<br />

more time and then go from there. When she’s got to go<br />

under (1):50, that’s when I’ll know if we’ve got the real deal<br />

or not.”<br />

See You At Peelers won all 13 of her starts as a<br />

2-year-old and was named the Dan Patch Award winner as<br />

the best filly in her age group. Last season, she won nine of<br />

12 races and again captured divisional honors. Her 22-race<br />

win streak was harness racing’s fourth longest in the U.S.<br />

over the last 20 years and done against primarily stakes<br />

competition.<br />

VIP Stable To Start First Thoroughbred Runner<br />

Today<br />

VIP Stable, one of harness racing’s top syndicates, has<br />

branched out into thoroughbred racing and will start its first<br />

runner today when the Gary Contessa-trained Crown The<br />

Chief runs in the third race at Aqueduct. The six-furlong<br />

event is a starter handicap with a $55,000 purse.<br />

“This is a horse we claimed<br />

for $30,000 a few weeks back,<br />

and he is racing for an amazing $55,000 purse - just about<br />

enough to pay back his claiming price if he wins,” VIP<br />

Founder and Managing Partner Ed O’Connor said. “As<br />

New York racing moves to <strong>Be</strong>lmont in the spring and then<br />

Saratoga this summer, the purses will reach amazing<br />

levels Purses at <strong>Be</strong>lmont will average $620,000 per day<br />

and at Saratoga, they will average $930,000 per day. Can<br />

you imagine racing in a maiden race at Saratoga for an<br />

$85,000 purse! Or in an Allowance race for a purse of<br />

$87,000.! Even low level claimers will race for big bucks,<br />

with $12,500 claimers going for a $43,000 purse and<br />

$25,000 claimers for $55,000. Holy cow.”<br />

O’Connor said that Crown the Chief is the stable’s only<br />

thoroughbred, but he plans to add several more in the<br />

coming weeks.<br />

O’Connor said that there are no plans to cut back on<br />

VIP’s standardbred operation.

Race 6, Overbid<br />

The FFA mare division gets a new look tonight as a number<br />

of the mares that we’ll see throughout the summer and later<br />

into the year make their seasonal debut. TEA PARTY<br />

PRINCESS already won the Open at Woodbine last out in<br />

her first start of the year and will likely be showing speed<br />

again. Won half her starts last year at three, and may offer<br />

some additional value being the only Burke horse in here<br />

not part of the entry. PUT ON A SHOW makes her first<br />

start in a year and a half and lands post 10. I’d imagine a<br />

very conservative effort coming, but will be one to watch.<br />

ANNDROVETTE was the sport’s older mare of the year in<br />

2011, and that Breeders Crown win was dominant. Has two<br />

qualifiers under her belt, could be ready to go right now.<br />

HIGHER AND HIGHER lost to the tripped out SYMPHONY<br />

IN MOTION in the Cape & Cutter final, gets tested even<br />

further.<br />

Race 7, Fillies & <strong>Mar</strong>es N/W $10,000 L5<br />

BLING had too far to come last week in her drop to this<br />

level, but it was a race she probably should have been in a<br />

better position to begin with. That 1/27 race from Yonkers<br />

would be more than good enough; still deserves to be<br />

favored. WHATS NEW PUSSYCAT took her tour of the<br />

track last week but now lands post 10 with two of the main<br />

contenders immediately to her inside. Qualified second to<br />

Put On A Show two back. CLASSIERIVERBOAT N<br />

brushed to the lead into the stretch last out but ran out of<br />

steam a little bit late. That was over a sloppy track, I can<br />

give one more chance from the rail. I went against RUN<br />

ON LUCK last week when she had the rail and got burned;<br />

let’s see if she can do it again but this time from out here.<br />

Speed will be coming.<br />

Race 8, Rags To Riches<br />

LAGUNA BEACH had his winning streak derailed last week,<br />

but it took heavy pressure throughout and a :53:4 half mile<br />

to do him in. He still hung in there pretty well despite it, and<br />

his race last week went in 1:51:1, by far the fastest division.<br />

ALASTAIR HANOVER rebounded after faltering two back<br />

when heavily backed. That 30K claiming line from three<br />

back and the rail tonight are intimidating. ROCKIN GLASS<br />

showed sharp pace on both ends of the mile two back and<br />

then took them wire to wire last out; this field is a bit<br />

TSMLIL ORPHAN ANDY nearly overcame a wide trip and<br />

stalled cover over that sloppy track last <strong>Friday</strong> to just miss<br />

against the pocket sitting winner Tigers Too Good. Was a<br />

very strong second to In Focus two back and does have a<br />

big class edge over most of these. One more chance.<br />

FOUR STARZ CREDIT looked like a winner last out midway<br />

through the stretch but was caught by a very sharp<br />

looking rival. He’ll be going right to the front again and<br />

another 1:54 type mile could very well get the job done<br />

this time. UP FRONT BEN has been here before, and<br />

now makes his debut for Julie Miller. I wouldn’t be at all<br />

surprised with an improved effort. WHYBABYWHY makes<br />

her second start back; could be closing at a long price.<br />

TORONTO, <strong>Mar</strong>ch 2 - Guns An Roses, who carries a<br />

two-race win streak, will be a top contender in the second<br />

leg of the $40,000 Cam Fella Pacing Series, set for Saturday<br />

evening at Woodbine.<br />

The four-year-old son of Life Sign-<strong>Be</strong>st Lady captured his<br />

first division in 1:51.3 for co-owner/breeder Joanne Colville,<br />

who co-owns with her daughter, Emma Christoforou, while<br />

Colville’s father, Frank, handles the training.<br />

Colville's decision to nominate Gun An Roses to the Cam<br />

Fella Pacing Series came after the brown gelding, who<br />

earned $99,170 last season, scored his lifetime best mark.<br />

“We weren’t sure if he was going to be able to go with<br />

these types of horses, but we decided to give him a shot,<br />

especially after he took his 1:50.3 record in the Grassroots<br />

Semi-final. He’s proven himself,” Colville said.<br />

Colville’s High Stakes Inc. bred has amassed $141,220 in<br />

career earnings to date.<br />

“He’s the type of horse that races better when he’s in the<br />

mix of things. That’s when you get the best performance out<br />

of him,” Colville noted. “He’s starting to show some of his<br />

mother's back-class (<strong>Be</strong>st Lady p,1:51.4 - $276,915).”<br />

Colville also believes that giving Guns An Roses the<br />

appropriate time off in the fall was instrumental to the<br />

recent success he’s enjoyed, namely earnings of $42,050<br />

from just six starts (three wins) in <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

“That was the best thing<br />

we could have done for<br />

him,” Colville said. “He<br />

really matured, filled out<br />

and grew into himself.<br />

form. So far, it’s paying off<br />

and hopefully that continues.”<br />

When Guns An Roses begins from post one in the second<br />

of two divisions Saturday night, Colville will hand the<br />

lines to fiancée, driver Jack Moiseyev.<br />

“Jack seems to get along well with him,” Colville said. “I<br />

know he thought quite a bit of him when he took his lifetime<br />

best and it looks like that’s continued. If not, we’ll<br />

have to make a driver change,” she said with a laugh.<br />

The Cam Fella Pacing Series is for four and<br />

five-year-old pacers in <strong>2012</strong>, who are non-winners of<br />

$150,000 lifetime as of midnight December 31, 2011. The<br />

$100,000 final is scheduled for Saturday, <strong>Mar</strong>ch 10.<br />
