“Many of our physicians are ‘dog’ people as
well as ‘people’ people. Here is a glimpse
into some of our physicians as they interact
with their canine companions.”
Edward Moore, President and CEO

Welcome
to our Harrington HealthCare System 2011 Community Calendar!
At Harrington, we believe in providing TLC – Total Local Care. We do that in
many ways: through the medical services we provide at Harrington Hospital
in Southbridge, at our comprehensive outpatient facility in Webster, called
Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard, and at our newest large medical facility,
Harrington HealthCare at Charlton.
Ronald P. Carlson
Edward H. Moore
We also provide Total Local Care through our network of physicians
throughout the region. Harrington has worked hard in recent years to meet
the needs of the communities we serve by hiring the best physicians and
locating them not only on the hospital campus in Southbridge and our two
large medical facilities in Webster and Charlton, but also in the communities
we serve. To Harrington HealthCare, it is very important to meet your medical
needs by locating top-quality physicians in neighborhood office buildings
close to you.
In order to underscore that point, we have decided to highlight, in our 2011
Community Calendar, just a few of the many doctors throughout the region
who are a part of the Harrington family of physicians. And we decided to
highlight these physicians in what we hope is a memorable and touching way—
by showing them with their dogs. We thought that photographing some of our
docs with their dogs would show you that, when these fine physicians aren’t
caring for patients, they’re caring for Man’s Best Friend.
Of course, there’s more to Total Local Care at Harrington than just our family
of physicians and our large medical facilities. TLC to us also means using the
most advanced medical equipment available and providing a comprehensive
array of medical services. It also means paying attention to quality and patient
safety. Our entire staff carries out our mission of Total Local Care by putting
the patient and his or her safety first and foremost. That means that, despite
our growth, we still embody the best a community hospital has to offer in
terms of individualized attention. We hope, through the pictures and words
in this calendar, to show you that side of Harrington as well.
As always, we offer this calendar to community members free of charge, as
a token of our appreciation that you have chosen Harrington HealthCare for
your medical needs. It is another example of our commitment to TLC—Total
Local Care.
Sincerely,
Ronald P. Carlson, Chairman of the Board 2011
Edward H. Moore, President and Chief Executive Officer

We are more than a hospital
There is much that I can say about Harrington Hospital and as out-going
President of the Medical Staff for the past six years, from October of 2004
through October of 2010, I have been closely involved with many of the
changes, plans and developments of this once-small community hospital.
Harrington has grown from the small local hospital it had been for many years
to a modernized medical center with the recently opened Cancer Center at
Harrington; Harrington HealthCare at Charlton, including Wound Care with
Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers; and the expansion to Webster with Harrington
HealthCare at Hubbard.
Vladas Litani, M.D., F.C.C.P.
However, as important as this expansion is, what I really want to tell you about
is what it means to be a member of the Harrington family. When my daughter
became ill, she was hospitalized in the Harrington Pediatric Department and
received treatment by excellent, knowledgeable pediatricians. When my
father-in-law became seriously ill while living in New York City, he demanded
to be transferred to Harrington Hospital, because for him it was home away
from home.
This is why Harrington is not just TLC—Total Local Care—for me... it’s home.
Sincerely,
Vladas Litani, M.D., F.C.C.P.
President of the Medical Staff
October 2004–October 2010
Renovated Rooms/Patient Safety
Our renovated patient rooms are modern, comfortable, and designed with the patient’s safety
in mind. Each renovated room has non-invasive electronic monitoring devices for taking vital
signs, a computer so that medical personnel can access a patient’s records while in the room,
and an Overbed Lift system that allows staff to use an electronic device to safely lift patients.
Shown, at left, State Senator Richard Moore toured the hospital during Patient Safety Week
in March 2010, and got a demonstration of the Overbed Lift, which was demonstrated on his
aide, Timothy Greene. Assisting, at far left, was Craig Langevin, Patient Care Assistant and, at
far right, was Kathy Chahanovich, Nurse Manager of the Medical Surgical units.

Our mission of Total Local Care means that we do everything we can to bring quality care to our
we serve, so that patients can receive quality care close to home. Harrington Physician Services
has physician offices in Brimfield, Charlton, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge and Webster. See the
Wound Care with Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers
The Wound Care Center at Harrington, in our new Harrington HealthCare at Charlton, is the
only wound treatment center in the region with hyperbaric oxygen chambers, which can help
speed the healing process. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a simple but effective treatment in
which one breathes pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The therapy quickly delivers
a high concentration of oxygen to the bloodstream, which helps increase the body’s own
natural wound-healing abilities. For more information or to schedule an appointment,
call 508-248-6780.

Physical Therapy
Our licensed rehabilitation experts can help you, whether you’re recovering from an illness or
an injury, are working to relieve pain, restore function or prevent a disability. Our rehabilitation
services include neurological, orthopedic and sports medicine programs and treatments. For
patients with chronic swelling of the arm or leg, we offer lymphedema services and for women with
bladder incontinence we offer rehabilitation services to eliminate this personal issue. We are now
located at three sites—Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, Harrington HealthCare at Charlton,
and Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard, on Cudworth Road in Webster. We are flexible with our
scheduling and will work to make an appointment that is convenient for you. A physician’s referral
is required. To schedule an appointment at any of our locations, please call 508-765-3120.

From the Auxiliary
Dear Members of the Harrington Hospital Community,
Our motto is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors since 1932”.
The Harrington Hospital Auxiliary is an organization whose members volunteer their
time and talents to support and enhance the services of our community hospital. Our
many fund raisers and volunteer hours provide Harrington Hospital with monies for
projects and patient comfort and care. Our continued interaction with the community
provides a vital link between the hospital and surrounding communities.
Watch for upcoming Health Fairs in the communities our hospital services.
Helen Santilli & Lily, a Morkie
Please visit our table to become acquainted with the handmade items our sewers,
knitters and crafters make for the comfort of our patients and as a token of hospitality.
They make hats, prayer shawls, lap blankets and heart pillows for our cancer patients.
Children in the emergency room and pediatrics receive their handmade stuffed animals,
puppets and teaching dolls. New babies on discharge are given a beautiful knitted
receiving blanket and bonnet. If you leave with a walker after knee or hip surgery you
receive a walker bag to attach for your personal items.
Our newly renovated Gift Shop is larger, brighter and has many wonderful gift items
for your shopping pleasure, including a great selection of cards, baby items, jewelry,
balloons and much more. Our floral displays are beautiful and very reasonable. If you
have a sudden need for flowers think of stopping in at the Gift Shop to pick up an
arrangement. The profits from the Gift Shop are used for our Appropriations Grant
Program. Approximately $30,000 is appropriated annually to hospital departments
requesting equipment and programs not provided in their budget.
Annually we award scholarships to area students embarking on careers in healthcare.
Again last year we were able to give a total of $16,000 in scholarships due to the
success of our annual “Lucky Duck Day”.
We cordially invite you to join our organization. It is a wonderful opportunity to give
back to your hospital and your community by applying your interest, talents and
expertise to the varied needs of our hospital. You can provide the most precious of
all gifts, your time. Your time helps our patients to become more comfortable during
a stressful time of need.
Men and women 18 years or older please consider becoming part of a great hospital
support team by calling Kelly at the Volunteer Services Office at 508-765-6472.
Please check our website for updated Auxiliary news and events.
